South Bay Union High School District

South Bay Union High School District, also known as the Redondo Union High School District, [1] was a school district in Los Angeles County, California. It served residents of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Redondo Beach. [2] It also served Torrance in the 1947-1948 school year. [3]

History

It was established circa 1905. [4] Redondo Union High School was the district's first high school. [5] Torrance High School was part of this district only for the 1947-1948 school year, as California law prevented the newly-formed Torrance school district from immediately controlling high schools. The following year it became the Torrance Unified School District and took control of Torrance High. [3] The second comprehensive high school that remained a part of the district, Mira Costa High School, opened in 1950. [5]

It had 7,000 students in 1970. The number of students decreaed, prompting the district to close Aviation High School in 1982. [6]

In 1991 the elementary school districts within South Bay Union HSD had plans to unify into a single K-12 school district. [7]

In spring 1991 the enrollment was down to 2,900. For the 1991-1992 school year the district was facing a budget shortfall of $1.4 million dollars and was considering closing either Mira Costa High School or Redondo Union High School. [6]

In November 1992 residents of the district approved Proposition V by 59.1%, which dissolved South Bay Union and created separate K-12 unified school districts for the constituent cities. The school district was scheduled to dissolve in July 1993. [2] Manhattan Beach Unified School District and Redondo Beach Unified School District were formed as a result. [5] Hermosa Beach City School District continued to serve Hermosa Beach for grades K-8, with residents able to choose between Redondo Union and Mira Costa high schools. [8]

Although it was fed by the Los Angeles River prior to the river's catastrophic change of course in 1825, the only stream of any size now flowing into it is Ballona Creek. The Manhattan Beach Unified School District is responsible for public education in the city of Manhattan Beach, California. It oversees five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. MBMS, or Manhattan Beach Middle School is a public middle school with over a thousand students which is in the South Bay. The school provides grades between sixth through eighth.

Mira Costa High School Public high school in the United States

It is the only high school in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District. The school's athletic teams are known as the Mustangs and the school colors are green and gold. Marvin Braude Bike Trail

The Marvin Braude Bike Trail, also known as The Strand, is a paved bicycle path that runs mostly along the shoreline of Santa Monica Bay in Los Angeles County, California. For most of the route, the bicycle path is Class 1 but for a few miles in Marina del Rey, the route is Class 2, where the bicycle route crosses 6 streets with automobiles and nearby traffic lights, adding moderate danger for bicyclists, pedestrians, roller skaters, and skateboarders.

Redondo Beach Unified School District is a school district with approximately 10,000 students headquartered in Redondo Beach, California. The school district consists of eight elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, one continuation school, and one adult school.

Aviation High School was a High School located in Redondo Beach, California which was in operation from 1957 to 1982. The school was located at the corner of Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Aviation Boulevard. Their athletic teams were known as the Falcons and the school colors were black and orange.

Torrance Unified School District

The Hermosa Beach School District is responsible for public education in the city of Hermosa Beach, California. It oversees two elementary schools and one middle school.

Los Angeles City High School District was a school district that served high school-aged residents of western Los Angeles County, California from 1890 to 1962. At times the district included Beverly Hills, Culver City, and Torrance.

Beach Cities Transit

Beach Cities Transit provides mass transportation for the Los Angeles beach city suburbs of Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and El Segundo. The two routes provide both local service and afford a variety of opportunities to connect with the rest of the Greater Los Angeles Transportation grid. The system began in 2005. Route 104 which it took over from Torrance Transit was cancelled in 2011 due to low ridership.

Beach Cities Robotics

Beach Cities Robotics is a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team from the South Bay area in Southern California. Team is composed of members from both Mira Costa High School and Redondo Union High School.
