SPARK is an international architecture and urban design studio registered in London, Singapore and Shanghai. The studio has designed a variety of projects from complex multiphased mixed-use buildings, city-scale master plans, residential and hotel developments, building regeneration and transformations to small scale urban infill projects.

History

Founded in 2008, SPARK’s projects include the rejuvenated Clarke Quay in Singapore, the International Cruise Terminal Shanghai, Starhill Gallery Kuala Lumpur, Arte S Penang, Rihan Heights Abu Dhabi, GRiD Singapore, Shekou Gateway Shenzhen and the Raffles City projects in Ningbo and Beijing.

SPARK owes its origins to the studio of British architect William Alsop, where Stephen Pimbley was a partner and worked for 16 years. He led projects such as Cardiff Bay Barrage, the Hôtel du département des Bouches-du-Rhône, Rotterdam Centraal, Calypso and The Public. He designed the transformation of Clarke Quay, leading to the founding of SPARK's first Asia studio in Singapore.

SPARK is known for its research and leadership projects. Each project deals with issues pertinent to problems the community faces in the places where SPARK works.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Shophouse</span> Building serving both as a residence and a commercial business

A shophouse is a building type serving both as a residence and a commercial business. It is defined in dictionary as a building type found in Southeast Asia that is "a shop opening on to the pavement and also used as the owner's residence", and became a commonly used term since the 1950s. Variations of the shophouse may also be found in other parts of the world; in Southern China, Hong Kong, and Macau, it is found in a building type known as Tong lau, and in towns and cities in Sri Lanka. They stand in a terraced house configuration, often fronted with arcades or colonnades, which present a unique townscape in Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, and South China.

Malaysia–Singapore Airlines was the flag carrier of Malaysia and Singapore. It came into being in 1966 as a result of a joint ownership of the airline by the governments of the two countries. The airline ceased operations after six years in 1972 when both governments decided to set up their own national airlines, Malaysian Airline System and Singapore Airlines.

YTL Corporation Berhad is a Malaysian infrastructure conglomerate, founded in 1955 by Yeoh Tiong Lay, after whom the group is named. YTL Corporation Berhad is an integrated infrastructure developer with extensive operations in countries including Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Myanmar, the Netherlands, Thailand and Vietnam. The company has grown from a small construction firm into a global infrastructure company generating over RM18 billion in revenues with over 70 percent coming from overseas.

Francis Yeoh Sock Ping is a Malaysian businessman, and the eldest son of late Malaysia billionaire Yeoh Tiong Lay. He was appointed a managing director of YTL Corporation in 1988 and grew it into a multi-disciplinary conglomerate comprising six listed entities. YTL Corporation Berhad, YTL Power International Berhad, YTL Land & Development Berhad, YTL Hospitality REIT, Lafarge Malaysia Berhad and Starhill Global REIT have a combined Market Capitalisation of approximately RM29.1 billion and total assets of RM74.7 billion. YTL Group owns and manages regulated utilities, real estate and infrastructure assets. Besides managing YTL Group's core listed entities, Tan Sri Francis is Executive Chairman of YTL Starhill Global REIT Management Limited, the manager for Starhill Global REIT. He is Chairman of YTL PowerSeraya Private Limited, which accounts for a 20% share of the Singapore Electricity market. He is Chairman of Wessex Water Services Limited, recognised as the best water and sewerage company in England and Wales (2010-2011) by the water industry regulator, Ofwat. He is also Executive Chairman of LaFarge Malaysia Berhad following its takeover by YTL Cement Berhad.

Ken Yeang is an architect, ecologist, planner and author from Malaysia, best known for his ecological architecture and ecomasterplans that have a distinctive green aesthetic. He pioneered an ecology-based architecture, working on the theory and practice of sustainable design. The Guardian newspaper (2008) named him "one of the 50 people who could save the planet".[ 1] Yeang's headquarters is in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) as Hamzah & Yeang, with offices in London (UK) as Llewelyn Davies Ken Yeang Ltd. and Beijing (China) as North Hamzah Yeang Architectural and Engineering Company.

Parkway Pantai, Ltd. is a medical company based in Singapore and is Southeast Asia's largest private healthcare provider, and one of the largest in Asia. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kuala Lumpur-based IHH Healthcare, whose largest shareholder is Malaysian state investment agency Khazanah Nasional. Parkway Pantai operates private hospitals in Singapore, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, India, Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates. IHH Healthcare also owns the International Medical University. In July 2017, According to the reports, Parkway Pantai issued a US$2 billion multicurrency bond to refinance its debts.

The Federal Route 1 is the first federal road in Malaysia, the oldest federal road in Malaysia, and among the nation's earliest public roadways ever constructed. The Federal Route 1 was the backbone of the road system in the western states of Peninsular Malaysia before being supplanted by the North–South Expressway.

Tan Sri Datuk Michael Chang Min Tat was a Malaysian Federal Court judge, a Commissioner of Law Revision and Law Reform and chairman of the Penang State Planning Appeals Board, among other roles, and was acknowledged for his tremendous contributions to the development of the law in Malaysia.

Arthur Benison Hubback was an English architect and soldier who designed several important buildings in British Malaya, in both Indo-Saracenic architecture and European "Wrenaissance" styles. Major works credited to him include Kuala Lumpur railway station, Ubudiah Mosque, Jamek Mosque, National Textile Museum, Panggung Bandaraya DBKL, Ipoh railway station, and Kowloon railway station.

Wei Ling Gallery is an art gallery located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the Brickfields area. The gallery's collection offers an overview of modern and contemporary art, including works of architecture and design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, electronic media and artist's books.

Regent Alfred John Bidwell, or R. A. J. Bidwell, was an English-born architect noted for his colonial era buildings in Singapore. His best-known works include the Raffles Hotel and the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall in Singapore, and Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur.

Stefen Chow a Malaysian photographer and artist based in Beijing, China. His work is widely published and exhibited internationally. In 2013, Chow's portrait of iconic Chinese artist and activist Ai Wei Wei was awarded at the World Press Photo. Chow frequently collaborates with economist Hui-Yi Lin using extensive data and research to produce long term visual projects. One of their prominent projects is “The Poverty Line", a visual project that contextualizes global poverty. The Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Beijing has acquired works to their permanent collection.

The Penang High Court, founded in 1808, is the birthplace of Malaysia's judiciary system. It is housed inside a Palladian-style building at Light Street, George Town, Penang. To this day, the High Court sits at the top of Penang's hierarchy of courts.

Arte S is a residential complex located in Gelugor, a suburb south of George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The complex consists of two residential towers, Tower A and Tower B. Tower A, with 35 stories, has a height of 121.4 m (398 ft). On the other hand, with 51 stories and a height of 186 m (610 ft), Tower B of the complex is the tallest skyscraper of Gelugor, as well as one of the tallest skyscrapers in Penang. It is the 15th tallest building in Malaysia outside of Kuala Lumpur, after Royal Strand Tower 2.
