Spencer Joel Condie (born August 27, 1940) has been a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) since 1989. Condie previously worked as a professor at Brigham Young University (BYU) and also served as a mission president for the LDS Church in Eastern Europe. In 2010, he was designated as an emeritus general authority.

Early life and education

Condie was born in Preston, Idaho. His family lived there until he was fifteen when they moved to Pocatello, Idaho. From 1960 to 1963, Condie served an LDS mission in the church's South German Mission. While there, he met Dorothea Speth, a native of Germany who was also serving as a missionary. They became reacquainted after their missions, a situation encouraged by Blythe Gardner, Condie's mission president. Condie and Speth were married in June 1964.

Condie received a B.A. from BYU, an M.A. from the University of Utah, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. He worked as a professor of both sociology and ancient scripture at BYU from 1969 to 1984 and again from 1987 to 1989.

LDS Church service

In the LDS Church, Condie served as a bishop, stake president and regional representative. In 1984, he became the president of the church's Austria Vienna Mission. In this capacity he not only oversaw missionary work in Austria, but also its development in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Greece.

In April 1989, Condie became a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy. Later that year, Condie was called to serve in the presidency of the church's Europe Area, where he again worked in opening missionary efforts in Eastern Europe. [1] [2] In 1991, Condie became the president of the Europe Mediterranean Area that was formed from dividing the former Europe Area. [3] In 1992, Condie was called as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy.

From October 2001 until October 2003, Condie served as a counselor in the church's Young Men general presidency. In 2003, Condie was the keynote speaker at BYU's annual Genealogy and Family History Conference. [4] From 2003 to 2008, he served in the presidency of the New Zealand/Pacific Islands Area, based in Auckland, New Zealand. On October 2, 2010, Condie was released from the First Quorum of the Seventy and designated an emeritus general authority at the church's general conference. [5]

From 2010 to 2013, Condie served as president of the Nauvoo Illinois Temple. [6]

In 2003, Condie published a biography of Russell M. Nelson. In 2014, Condie spoke at the 18th Annual Education Conference at Southern Virginia University. [7]

He is currently an emeritus general authority. From 2003 to 2007, Bateman was a member of the church's Presidency of the Seventy. He was president of Brigham Young University (BYU) from January 1, 1996, until May 1, 2003, and was the church's twelfth presiding bishop in 1994 and 1995. In 2003 and 2004, Bateman was the general president of the church's Sunday School organization. From 2007 to 2010, Bateman was president of the Provo Utah Temple.

Bruce Clark Hafen is an American attorney, academic and religious leader. He has been a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1996.

Marlin Keith Jensen is an American attorney who has been a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1989. He served as the official Church Historian and Recorder of the church from 2005 to 2012. He was the 19th man to hold that calling since it was established in 1830. Jensen was made an emeritus general authority in the October 2012 general conference.

John Kay Carmack has been a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1984. He is currently an emeritus general authority and was the managing director of the church's Perpetual Education Fund from 2001 to 2012.

Glenn Leroy Pace was a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1985 until his death. As a general authority, he served as a counselor in the presiding bishopric and also in the First Quorum of Seventy. In 2010, he was designated an emeritus general authority.

Neil L. Andersen

Neil Linden Andersen is an American religious leader and former business executive who serves as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was sustained by church membership as an apostle on April 4, 2009, during the church's General Conference. At the time of his call to the Twelve, Andersen had been serving as an LDS general authority since 1993, including service in the Presidency of the Seventy from 2005 to 2009. Currently, he is tenth apostle in order of seniority in the church.

Carlos E. Asay

Carlos Egan Asay was a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1976 until his death.

John Richard Clarke has been a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1976. He has been a member of the church's presiding bishopric and a member of the Presidency of the Seventy.

David Eugene Sorensen was a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1992 until his death.
