Steven Gilfoyle (born in Glasgow, Scotland; is better known by his stage name Steg G) is a Scottish hip hop music producer, radio presenter and recording artist. [1] His involvement with Scottish hip-hop culture began with a pioneering role in the early to mid '90s, and he is still involved twenty years later. He is the founder and current CEO of Powercut Productions, a hip hop label based in Glasgow, Scotland. [2]

Biography

He started his early hip hop career working with local rap acts such as BAAD Company and Sons of the Devil as their DJ and producer. His first official single was released on Devil Discs and was with a 4 piece group called Powermove (Steg G, Shoey, Freestyle Master Jimmy P). The single "But We're Different" [3] was an early example of Hip Hop music which featured a Scottish accent and perspective.

He has performed with 50 Cent and Kanye West. [4] He performed at the "Kelvingroove" festival in Glasgow in 2007. [5]

Currently Steg G works closely with several high-profile Scottish rap artists, including: Werd (sons of Scotland). MOG, Respek BA, Loki, Wee D, Wardie Burns, Uvbeatz and long time collaborator Freestyle Master.

He has remixed tracks for Sugar Minot, Stanley Odd, Clan Disciples, Wardie Burns, Werd, and A Band Called Quinn. He has also supported acts by DJing. [6]

He was the first DJ to remix Kylie and Jason’s finest hits and his favourite song is The Locomotion.

Radio

He has been involved in training and development work through community radio for several years. [7] He presents hip-hop radio shows on Sunny Govan, a community radio station based in Glasgow. [8] In 2010, he appeared on TV in the UK version of the TV show "The Secret Millionaire" meeting Gordon McAlpine – a multimillionaire who had gone undercover to meet Steg G to and see the community development work happening at the station. [9] Since 2007, Sunny Govan has become the biggest community station in Glasgow, providing an open door to broadcasting for people with disabilities and special needs. [10] Steg G was also involved performing on and producing the 'Turn it Up Glasgow' CD to raise money for community development. [11] In 2014, Steg G hosted rappers from both sides of the Scottish independence referendum debate on his show. [12]

Cultural awareness

Steg G has been rapping with an authentic Scottish voice before many other artists were confident to do so. [13]

In 2007, he responded to a TV makeover show called "Colin and Justin on the estate" by making a video called "Schemes". [4] In March 2015, together with 'The Freestyle Master', he released a video to raise awareness of the Barras, a market which is one of Glasgow's famous institutions. [14]

In 2010, he helped to produce the "Anti Knife Crime EP", a project run in conjunction with The Leith Agency which was aiming to reduce knife crime by reaching out to a young audience. [15]

Nathaniel Thomas Wilson, better known by his stage name Kool G Rap, is an American rapper from Queens, New York City. He began his career in the mid-1980s as one half of the group Kool G Rap & DJ Polo and as a member of the Juice Crew. Onyx went on to release three top selling albums before Fredro began his solo career. As a part of Onyx, Fredro Starr was nominated as "Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop New Artist" on American Music Awards of 1994 and won "Best Rap Album" on 1994 Soul Train Music Awards.

Lloyd Banks American rapper from New York

Christopher Charles Lloyd, better known by his stage name Lloyd Banks, is an American rapper. Banks began his career as a member of East Coast hip hop group G-Unit, alongside childhood friends 50 Cent and Tony Yayo. After the group's 2003 release of their debut album, Beg for Mercy, Banks released his first solo album, The Hunger for More, in 2004, featuring the top ten hit single "On Fire". His second studio album, Rotten Apple, was released in 2006.

The Game (rapper) American rapper from California

Jayceon Terrell Taylor, better known by his stage name the Game or simply Game, is an American rapper. Born in Compton, California, he initially released a series of mixtapes under the wing of fellow West Coast rapper JT the Bigga Figga. After releasing his debut independent album Untold Story in 2004, he was eventually discovered by record producer Dr. Dre and signed to his Aftermath Records label imprint. The Game rose to fame in 2005 with the success of his major-label debut album The Documentary and found continued success with the 2006 follow-up Doctor's Advocate. The Recording Industry Association of America certified The Documentary Double Platinum in March 2005.

"Drop It Like It's Hot" is a song by American rapper Snoop Dogg featuring American musician Pharrell Williams. It was released on September 27, 2004, as the lead single from Snoop Dogg's seventh studio album, R&G : The Masterpiece (2004). The song was produced by The Neptunes. Snoop performs the chorus and the second and third verses, while Pharrell performs the first verse. It is regarded as an iconic song.

Serbian hip hop refers to all genres of hip hop music in the Serbian language. The term is also sometimes used to refer to any hip hop music made by Serbs, including instrumental hip hop, as well as rap songs by members of the Serbian diaspora, often in languages other than Serbian. Craig Curry, better known by his stage name Craig G, is an American rapper from Queensbridge, Queens, New York. He is perhaps best known as one of the members of hip hop producer Marley Marl's Cold Chillin' Records group the Juice Crew.

Joell Christopher Ortiz is an American rapper and a member of the group Slaughterhouse. Ortiz grew up in the Cooper Park Houses in the East Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York, formerly signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment record label. Crooked I American rapper from California

Dominick Antron Wickliffe, better known by his stage names Crooked I and Kxng Crooked, is an American rapper from Long Beach, California. He is best known as a former member of the Hip Hop supergroup Slaughterhouse with other members Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Royce da 5'9". He is currently CEO of his own record labels, Dynasty Entertainment and C.O.B. Digital as well as Senior Vice President of Treacherous Records. John R. Austin IV, better known by his stage name Ras Kass, is an American rapper. He is a member of the hip hop supergroup The HRSMN, along with Canibus, Killah Priest, and Kurupt in 2014. He is also a member of the group Golden State Warriors with Xzibit and Saafir. About.com ranked him No. 30 on their list of the Top 50 MCs of Our Time (1987–2007), while Pitchfork Media called him "one of the best rappers of all time."

Hector Bizerk were an experimental hip-hop group from Glasgow, Scotland, featuring drummer Audrey Tait and rapper Louie. Formed in 2011, they were initially a duo. However later recordings saw them add Jennifer Muir and Fraser Sneddon (Bass). They have released five EPs and three albums, and their 2014 EP The Bird That Never Flew features guest vocals from Scotland's Makar Liz Lochhead.

Joshua Paul Davis, better known by his stage name DJ Shadow, is an American DJ, songwriter and record producer. He first gained notice with the release of his acclaimed debut studio album, Endtroducing...... He has a personal collection of more than 60,000 records.

Sunny Govan Radio, also known as "Sunny G", is a community radio station based in Govan, Glasgow, Scotland. It is run by the charity Sunny Govan Community Radio Group.
