Steve Guerdat (born 10 June 1982) is a Swiss equestrian who competes in the sport of show jumping.

He is the 2012 Olympic Champion in individual jumping. [1] He also won the bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in team jumping following the disqualification of Norwegian rider Tony André Hansen. [2]

In July 2012, Guerdat was ranked third in the world. [3] In 2019 he was the first in the FEI ranking for the whole year. In January 2020 he was second in the FEI ranking, just behind the other swiss rider Martin Fuchs. He has been back at the top since February 2020. [4]

He is a three-time World Cup champion, winning in 2015, 2016 and 2019. [5]

Career

Guerdat began riding at the age of seven. He was trained by his father, Philippe Guerdat, and by Beat Mändli.

Between 1997 and 2002 he was part of two junior and three young rider European championships and won two bronze medals with the team.

In 2003 he switched to the Netherlands and worked there for Jan Tops. He was selected for the jumping events at the 2004 Summer Olympics where he rode "Olympic".

In 2006 he moved to Belgium and worked for three months for billionaire Oleksandr Onishchenko.

After that Yves Piaget bought him the mare Jalisca Solier, with which he won the World Cup in Geneva.

He was selected for the 2008 Summer Olympics where he rode Jalisca Solier and won the bronze medal in team jumping following the disqualification of Norwegian rider Tony André Hansen.

In 2009 and 2011 he was named "Swiss rider of the year".

In 2012, Steve reached for the first time to top place of the world rankings. [6] That same year he competed in London with the French Selle-Francais Nino de Buissonnets at his third Olympic Games. He was the only rider who jumped cleanly in the two final rounds of the competition and won the individual jumping gold medal. [7] [8] He was the first Swiss rider to win a gold medal in the jumping event since 1924 where Alphonse Gemuseus won in individual jumping. [9]

He won back to back FEI World Cup Jumping competitions in 2015 and 2016, with the more recent competition taking place in Göteborg, Sweden.

Personal life

Guerdat is the youngest son of Olympic show jumper Philippe Guerdat.

From April 2007 till 2017 Guerdat has lived in Herrliberg in the stables of Urs Schwarzenbach. Since 2017 he lives in his owns stables near Zürich in Elgg. The stables were in the past propriety of the swiss rider Paul Weier. [10]

The French rider Fanny Skalli has announced during summer 2019 on her Instagram account the she was engaged with Steve Guerdat. On April 9 his daughter Ella was born. [11]

The new breed was meant to serve as a unified sport horse during a period when horses were being replaced by mechanization and were transforming into an animal used mainly for sport and leisure.

Catherine Durand-Henriquet is a French equestrian. She was twice selected for the Equestrian at the Summer Olympics. She brought the first Iberian horse to International and Olympic levels and was also the first rider in the Versailles tradition to ever ride in the Olympic Games. She was national dressage champion multiple times. Together with her husband, famous equestrian and dressage master Michel Henriquet, she wrote a number of major dressage and horse training books and released a young horse training DVD series showing how the Henriquets take young horses from their first time under the saddle to the Grand Prix. Catherine Henriquet still actively shows Hanoverian horses and Lusitano horses at Grand Prix level and has trained dozens of horses to the Grand Prix. She currently rides two horses on the Big Tour: 18.7 hands Hanoverian gelding Lexus Gold and 15.7 hands Lusitano gelding Diabeau du Coussoul. Henriquet is also a retired dermatologist and always maintained professional practice while showing internationally. Having a full time profession aside from riding sometimes got in the way of being able to attend international shows and selections.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mylord Carthago (show jumping horse)</span> Show jumping horse from France

Mylord Carthago is a gray Selle Français stallion and show jumping champion. Descended from Almé Z and sired by the Holsteiner stallion Carthago, his potential was recognized very early on. At the age of seven, he was entrusted to Norman rider Pénélope Leprévost, who trained him and made him her lead horse. The pair went on to win European and World show jumping runner-up titles in 2010 and 2012. Combining sport with his breeding career, Mylord is also one of France's last national stallions. The threat of his sale after the 2014 World Equestrian Games has led to a number of negative reactions, both from the show jumping public and from political figures.

Otello du Soleil was a bay-colored sport horse registered in the Selle Français studbook, who has been ridden mainly by Swiss show jumper Romain Duguet. He was a son of Alligator Fontaine and a daughter of Papillon Rouge.

Totem de Brecey is a gray Selle Français gelding, ridden in eventing competitions by the French rider Christopher Six. It participated in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and won a bronze medal in the team event.
