The Strategic Management Society (SMS) is a professional society for the advancement of strategic management. [1] The society consists of nearly 3,000 members representing various backgrounds and perspectives from more than eighty different countries. Membership is composed of academics, business practitioners, and consultants. The society has been credited with being a factor in the development of strategic management as a legitimate field of scholarly endeavor. [2] The SMS publishes the Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and the Global Strategy Journal.

History

The Strategic Management Society was founded at an initial meeting in London in 1981. Founding officers were elected at a second conference held in Montreal in 1982, and the founding constitution was drawn and approved at the third meeting in Paris in 1983. There were 459 original founding members of the society.

Strategic Management Journal

The Strategic Management Journal has, since its establishment in 1980, been the official journal of the Strategic Management Society. [3] It is published in 13 issues per year by Wiley-Blackwell and the editors-in-chief are Richard A. Bettis, Will Mitchell, and Edward J. Zajac. According to the Journal Citation Reports , the journal has a 2012 impact factor of 3.367. [4]

Key topics discussed in the journal are strategic resource allocation; organization structure; leadership; entrepreneurship and organizational purpose; methods and techniques for evaluating and understanding competitive, technological, social, and political environments; planning processes; and strategic decision processes. [5]

Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal

The Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal is a quarterly publication of the Strategic Management Society. It was established in 2007 and is published by Wiley-Blackwell. The editors-in-chief are Jay Barney, Mike Wright, Rajshree Agarwal, and G. T. Lumpkin. According to the Journal Citation Reports, the journal has a 2012 impact factor of 1.205. [4]

The journal covers practice of managing organizations as they deal with entrepreneurial processes and the inevitable changes and transformations that result in ten theme areas:

Global Strategy Journal

The Global Strategy Journal] is a quarterly publication of Wiley-Blackwell published on behalf of the Strategic Management Society. The journal was established in May 2011. The first two issues of volume one were released in May 2011 as a double issue. The first volume included two invited papers for each of the ten topic areas:

The SMS Book Series

The SMS Book Series is published in cooperation with Wiley-Blackwell and focuses on cutting edge concepts/topics in strategic management theory and practice. The books emphasize building and maintaining bridges between theory and practice in strategic management. The work published generates and tests theories of strategic management and it demonstrates how to learn, understand and apply these theories in practice.

Meetings

Annual conferences

The SMS holds an annual conference, typically alternating between North America and Europe. Past locations include Prague, [6] Berlin, Vancouver, San Francisco, Paris, Baltimore, San Juan, Orlando, Vienna, San Diego, Cologne, Washington, D.C.

Each conference addresses a current theme, with specific tracks addressing sub-themes, and presents multiple sessions by leading experts in the field from around the world.

Special conferences

Along with the annual conference, each year SMS organizes special conferences that focus on a particular topic or region. Previous special conferences were held in India in 2008 and Finland in 2010. In March 2011, a special conference was held in Rio de Janeiro to discuss the role of Latin America in global development. In June 2011, scholars reflected on the extensive contributions of C.K. Prahalad, in a special conference in San Diego organized after his death in April 2010. The next special conference was in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China in December 2012. The focus of this conference was "Competing and Cooperating in and for China."

Membership

SMS has nearly 3,000 members from more than eighty different countries. Membership is open to anyone who is active in the strategic management field, either as an academic scholar or teacher, as a business practitioner, or in a consulting capacity. There are three distinct memberships.

Emeritus membership is offered to individuals who are passed the age of 65 and have been an SMS member for at least 10 years. Student membership is offered to individuals who are enrolled full-time, in-residence at the PhD granting institution. Individuals can be SMS student members for up to five years

Fellows

The Strategic Management Fellows are a group of individuals elected because of their substantial contribution to the field . There are currently 62 fellows. [7]

Strategy Research Foundation

The Strategy Research Foundation (SRF) is an initiative of the Strategic Management Society to support the generation, preservation and dissemination of new knowledge in the field of strategic management. Initially funded by the SMS, the foundation provides support, primarily in the form of research grants, to academic researchers with the aim of promoting their research and inviting them to tackle problems and issues as defined in the annual SRF call for proposals for the General Research Program and the Dissertation Research Program.

Corporate entrepreneurship is a more general term referring to entrepreneurial actions taking place within an existing organization whereas Intrapreneurship refers to individual activities and behaviors.

David John Teece is a New Zealand-born US-based organizational economist and the Professor in Global Business and director of the Tusher Center for the Management of Intellectual Capital at the Walter A. Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.

Zoltan J. Acs is an American economist. He is Professor of Management at The London School of Economics (LSE), and a professor at George Mason University, where he teaches in the Schar School of Policy and Government and is the Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Public Policy. He is also a visiting professor at Imperial College Business School in London and affiliated with the University of Pecs in Hungary. He is co-editor and founder of Small Business Economics.

Entrepreneurship is the creation or extraction of economic value. With this definition, entrepreneurship is viewed as change, generally entailing risk beyond what is normally encountered in starting a business, which may include other values than simply economic ones.

Rita Gunther McGrath is an American strategic management scholar and professor of management at the Columbia Business School. She is known for her work on strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, including the development of discovery-driven planning.

Timo Juhani Santalainen is a Finnish academic and consultant.

Nicolai Juul Foss is a Danish organizational theorist, and scholar of entrepreneurship and strategy. He is currently a professor at the Copenhagen Business School where he has spent most of his career. Foss' main contribution to organization theory is through the micro-foundational perspective in organization theory and management—examining how individual behaviors aggregate to affect the behavior of larger groups and organizations. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 2015.

The British Academy of Management (BAM), founded in 1986, is a learned society dedicated to advancing the academic discipline of management in the United Kingdom. It is a member of the Academy of Social Sciences. The academy runs two peer-reviewed academic journals: the British Journal of Management and the International Journal of Management Reviews. The headquarters of the British Academy of Management is in London, United Kingdom.

Neuromanagement uses cognitive neuroscience, among other life science fields, and technology to analyze economic and managerial issues. It focuses on exploring human brain activities and mental processes when people are faced with typical problems of economics and management. This research provides insight into human decision-making and other general social behavior. The main research areas include decision neuroscience, neuroeconomics, neuromarketing, neuro-industrial engineering, and neuro-information systems. Neuromanagement was first proposed in 2006 by Professor Qingguo Ma, the director of Neuromanagement Laboratory of Zhejiang University.

Behavioral strategy refers to the application of insights from psychology and behavioral economics to the research and practice of strategic management. In one definition of the field, "Behavioral strategy merges cognitive and social psychology with strategic management theory and practice. Behavioral strategy aims to bring realistic assumptions about human cognition, emotions, and social behavior to the strategic management of organizations and, thereby, to enrich strategy theory, empirical research, and real-world practice".

Per Davidsson is an entrepreneurship professor that holds Swedish and Australian citizenship. He is currently a professor of entrepreneurship at Jönköping International Business School and Queensland University of Technology Business School where he served as the Talbot Family Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship and Founding Director of the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research (ACE) during 2010–2018. He serves on the editorial boards for several journals and has participated in many research programs including the Comprehensive Australian Study of Entrepreneurial Emergence. On March 22, 2023 he was named the 2023 recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research.

Giovanni Battista Dagnino is an Italian economist and academic. He is the Chair of Management and Professor of Digital Strategy at the Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta University of Rome, where he is the Founding Director of the MSc Degree in Economics and Management.

Elias G. Carayannis is a Greek-American economist who is presently a full Professor of Science, Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the George Washington University School of Business in Washington, D.C.

Yossi Dashti (born in 1952) is an Israeli-American author, researcher, and business facilitator, in the field of computer information systems, innovation and entrepreneurship. In his books and publications, he promotes value creation and process improvements, while integrating academic research and practical technology innovation business experience. In his early career, Dr. Dashti was engaged with Information Technology (IT) and software applications and was among the pioneers in the development of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and E-Commerce platforms. Since 2008, he has been actively promoting China-Israel collaboration in academia and industry, teaching in several universities and setting technology transfer in the two countries. His engagements and contribution to the China Israel relationship are presented and exemplified in his book titled “Jewish Principals, Innovation and Entrepreneurship – China-Israel Collaboration Opportunities”. Dr. Dashti has also been involved in social activities, mainly in the field of education, serving as a board member of several associations.

Serden Özcan is a professor and holder of the Otto Beisheim Endowed Chair of Innovation and Corporate Transformation at the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar near Koblenz. During the 2017/2018 academic year the Chair of Innovation and Corporate Transformation moved from Vallendar to Düsseldorf.

Shaista E. Khilji is an American academic, researcher, and author. She is a Professor of Human and Organizational Learning & International Affairs at the George Washington University, where from 2018 to 2022 she served as a Faculty Senator, and a member of Faculty Senate Executive Committee. She is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of South Asia Journal of Business Studies.

Hart E. Posen is an academic, researcher, and business analyst. He is a Professor of Management and Human Resources, and the Richard G. and Julie J. Diermeier Professor in Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Kimberly Ann Eddleston is the Schulze Distinguished Professorof Entrepreneurship, and Professor of Entrepreneurship & Innovation at D’Amore-McKim School of Business, Northeastern University. Her expertise on subjects related to family business management and small business management is quoted in US sources. She has received many academic awards by US institutions and is a leading editor of several academic journals.

Saras D. Sarasvathy is an American entrepreneurship professor and recipient of the 2022 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research. She is currently the Paul M. Hammaker Professor in Business Administration at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business and the Jamuna Raghavan Chair Professor in Entrepreneurship, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. She serves on the editorial boards or as associate editor of several academic journals as well as serving as an outside director to the public company Lending Tree. She is most well known for her conception of Effectuation, a theory of Entrepreneurial action based on the study of Expert Entrepreneurs. Her award-winning journal article - "Causation and Effectuation: Toward a Theoretical Shift from Economic Inevitability to Entrepreneurial Contingency" is one of the most highly cited academic articles about entrepreneurship of all time.
