Superior Aviation Beijing is a Chinese aircraft manufacturer.

Superior was initially formed as Qingdao Haili Helicopter Co and Qingdao Brantly Investment Group, a private venture that purchased the Brantly International rights and tooling to manufacture a UAV in China. [2]

Superior Aviation was formed in 2010 with the purchase of the American aircraft part manufacturer, Superior Air Parts. It is 60% owned by Chairman Cheng Shenzong, and 40% owned by Beijing E-Town International Investment & Development Co., Ltd., an economic development agency of the Beijing municipal government. In July 2012, Superior entered a contract to takeover the assets of Hawker Beechcraft pending approval. The deal did not include the Hawker Beechcraft Defense Company subsidiary. [5] [6] On 18 October 2012 multiple sources [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] reported that the negotiations for the takeover had failed. Euan Rocha and Stuart Grudgings writing for Reuters reported that the CEO of Hawker Beechcraft, Steve Miller, had attributed the failure to "China-bashing by U.S. presidential candidates may have contributed to failure of the talks" [8] although an article in that Wall Street Journal pointed to other reasons for the failure of the negotiations, including national security concerns as "the company's defense operations were integrated with its civilian businesses that proved difficult to untangle", [7] and legal complications, as "advisers in the U.S. had trouble negotiating with Chinese representatives unfamiliar with U.S. finance and bankruptcy law." [7] A press release from Hawker Beechcraft ascribing the failure to the fact that, "the proposed transaction with Superior could not be completed on terms acceptable to the company." [9] Textron Aviation eventually bought Hawker Beechcraft in 2014. [12]

The company owns Superior Air Parts, Brantly International, Qingdao Brantly Investment Group, Weifang Freesky Aviation Industry and Qingdao Haili Helicopter Manufacturing. [13]

The Light Attack/Armed Reconnaissance (LAAR) or Light Air Support (LAS) program was a United States Air Force program for a new light counter-insurgency, ground attack and reconnaissance aircraft. The aircraft should be capable of finding, tracking, and attacking targets either on its own or in support of ground forces. The program formally began in July 2009 with a request for information. No request for proposal has yet been issued. Approximately 100 aircraft were expected to be ordered, but USAF has reduced the number of aircraft sought to 15 aircraft. The 15 aircraft program was focused at training pilots, not a combat mission. This program has also been called the OA-X program or the AT-X program, although the reduced scope of the LAAR program has forced the USAF to push an "OA-X" program indefinitely into the future. In late 2019, the program received renewed attention by lawmakers, who expressed their frustrations with the program's pace. A group of legislators introduced amendments to the House and Senate versions of the FY 2020 National Defense Authorization Act that would transfer control of the program to the commander of U.S. Special Operations Command.

Superior Air Parts, Inc. is a Chinese-owned manufacturer of aviation piston engine replacement parts, headquartered in Coppell, Texas, United States. The company has been owned by Superior Aviation Beijing since 2010.

Qingdao Haili Helicopters is a Chinese aircraft manufacturer. The organization was formed in 2007 to acquire the American helicopter company Brantly International, and manufacture the Brantly B-2 series of helicopters. The company later developed an unmanned version of the Brantly design developed with Weifang Tianxiang Aerospace Industry that was first flown in 2011. In 2011, Superior Aviation Beijing was merged with Brantley. In 2012, the company suspended production of the B2-B due to poor export sales.

Textron Aviation Inc. is the general aviation business unit of the conglomerate Textron that was formed in March 2014 following the acquisition of Beech Holdings which included the Beechcraft and Hawker Aircraft businesses. The new business unit includes the Textron-owned Cessna. Textron Aviation sells Beechcraft and Cessna-branded aircraft. While no longer selling new Hawker airplanes, Textron Aviation still supports the existing Hawker aircraft fleet through its service centers.
