Swaraj Abhiyan is an Indian political party that began on 14 April 2015. It was formed by Yogendra Yadav and anti-corruption activist Prashant Bhushan in Gurgaon following their expulsion from the Aam Aadmi Party. The organisation claims to transform ideology into reality and to achieve Swaraj in all aspects of life - political, economical, social and cultural. On 31 July 2016, Swaraj Abhiyan announced the decision to form a political front, Swaraj India. [2] Subsequently on 2 October 2016, a political party - Swaraj India was announced, with intention to participate in local body elections to start with. [3]

Background

In late 2014, Prashant Bhushan alleged that the selection process for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates in the forthcoming 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly election was not in accordance with the founding principles of the party. [4] This started a series of allegations and counter-allegations which resulted in the removal of Yogendra Yadav and Bhushan from the party's Political Affairs Committee in 2015. [5] [6]

These developments led to an open dialogue - Swaraj Samwad - conducted by supporters of Yadav and Bhushan on 14 April 2015 to discuss the situation and the future direction. [7] [8] [9] The outcome was the formation of Swaraj Abhiyan.

Bhushan is current National President of Swaraj Abhiyan. [10]

Jai Kisan Andolan

Swaraj Abhiyan launched a nationwide public movement called Jai Kisan Andolan to bring attention to farmers' rights in India. [11] This aims to highlight the plight of farmers due to alleged lapses in public policies related to agriculture. Currently[ when? ] it is coordinating between small farmer groups across the country to raise voices against amendments in Land Acquisition Act, farmer compensations, rationalisation of minimum support price for crops and demand for a pay commission for farmers. [12] [13] Yogendra Yadav is National Convener of Jai Kisan Andolan.[ citation needed ]

In December 2015, Prashant Bhushan filed a Public Interest Litigation with the Supreme Court of India on behalf of Swaraj Abhiyan, requesting the court's intervention to ensuring proper supply of grains, pulses and sugar through the public distribution system in drought-affected states, as prescribed by the national food security law of 2013. Politics in reorganised present-day Punjab is dominated by mainly three parties – Indian National Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). Since 1967, Chief Minister of Punjab has been predominantly from Jat Sikh community despite its 21 percent state population. Exceptions are Giani Zail Singh, the Chief Minister of Punjab from 17 March 1972 to 30 April 1977 belonging to Ramgarhia community that has population of 6 percent and is a part of significant OBC community having population of 31.3 percent in the state and Charanjit Singh Channi who held the position for 111 days from 20 September 2021 to 16 March 2022 and was from Scheduled Caste(Dalit) who have 32 percent population in the state. Other prominent party is Bahujan Samaj Party especially in Doaba region founded by Kanshi Ram of Rupnagar district. In 1992 BSP won 9 seats Vidhan Sabha elections. Also BSP won 3 lok sabha seats from Punjab in 1996 general elections and only Garhshanker seat in 1997 Vidhan Sabha elections. Communist parties too have some influence in the Malwa area. In the 2014 general elections, the first-time contesting Aam Aadmi Party got 4 out of 13 seats in Punjab by winning 34 of the total 117 assembly segments, coming second in 7, third in 73 and fourth in the rest 3 segments. The support for the Aam Aadmi Party increased later in Punjab. The current Government was elected in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and the AAP won 92 out of 117 Assembly seats with Bhagwant Mann as the Chief Minister. The Congress flows down to get only 18 seats.

Gajendra Singh Kalyanwat was a landowner, self-employed businessman and aspiring politician from Dausa district, about 120 km east of Jaipur, in Rajasthan, India. A local politician who started his career with the Bharatiya Janata Party, he switched to Samajwadi Party and contested the 2003 Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha elections as an SP candidate when the BJP denied him an election ticket. He was the district president and Rajasthan state executive member of the SP till 2013, when he switched to the Indian National Congress. On being denied a ticket by the Congress party as well, he finally joined the Aam Aadmi Party.

Swaraj India is an Indian political party that was launched on 2 October 2016. It was formed by Yogendra Yadav and anti-corruption activist Prashant Bhushan. Avik Saha is the National General Secretary of the Party while Christina Samy is the current National President. On 31 July 2016, Swaraj Abhiyan which formed as a political platform on 14 April 2015, announced the decision to form a political front, Swaraj India. Subsequently on 2 October 2016, a political party - Swaraj India was born. Prof Anand Kumar and Prof Ajit Jha are the other prominent leaders among the 100 founding members.
