Tajamul Islam (born December 2008) is an Indian kickboxer and coach from the Bandipora district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Islam is the world's youngest kickboxing champion, and the first Kashmiri, having won a sub-junior world championship at 7 years old. After denouncing the lack of sport facilities in the region, she opened her own martial art academy where she mentors and trains hundreds of young girls to compete in kickboxing. An advocate for young women to have access to education and opportunities to succeed, she is a campaign ambassador for the Government of India’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative.

A recipient of several awards, including the Jammu and Kashmir Government State Award and the 2021 Kashmir Excellence Award; she was named as one of CNN-News18 Indian of the Year 2022 nominee for her efforts and achievements, running a successful martial art academy at only 13-year-old.

Biography

Islam was born in December 2008 in Tarkpora, a remote village in the Bandipora district of the Kashmir Valley. [2]  She started kickboxing and wushu at age 6 after joining a local martial arts academy, Islam trained in an open field with makeshift apparatus while studying at the Indian Army's Goodwill School. [3]

World's youngest kickboxing champion

At age 7 she won India's sub-junior National Kickboxing Championship, held at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, after defeating a 13-year-old opponent in just 15 minutes. [3] She became the youngest female to win a national kickboxing competition. [4] In March 2016 she became the youngest gold medalist in the state-level Wushu Championships. [3] In November she won the sub-junior World Kickboxing Championship in Italy, after winning six fights in five days, in the under-9 category, becoming the World's youngest kickboxing champion at age 7. [5]

Advocacy

According to the BBC Islam became an inspiration for the youth and especially for girls, [6] as Kashmir's conservative society can frown upon girls playing outdoor sports and social stigma and gender inequality often discourage them from taking up sports. [7] Her success was described as contributing to shatter the glass ceiling, by motivating Kashmir women to practice and even choose sport as a career, [8] during his monthly radio show, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged others to emulate her. [9] In 2017 in a social media post, Islam criticised the Jammu & Kashmir government over the lack of sports facilities, poor infrastructure, lack of equipment and absence of sport coaches, accusing them of false promises. [10] [11] [12] After that video went viral, [13] the President of the state's sports council agreed to release some funding towards local sports facilities. [14] In March 2017 she asked Sports Minister Vijay Goel in a meeting that his ministry officially recognise the sport of kickboxing [15] so that "children like me can get inspired to learn". [9]

In 2016 she called for the Indian government to find a solution to the Kashmir issue and "address the pain and agony of Kashmiri people". [16] [17] [18] In an interview with the Times of India while in Mumbai attending a conference on women empowerment, she emphasised again the importance of empowering girls. [19] In 2017, film producer Mushtaq Nadiadwala announced having secured the rights for a biopic about Islam with writer Shibani Bathija working on a script about her life. [20] [21]

In June 2018 she was featured in a UN Women music video among other Indian women achievers from across different sections of society "to inspire women and girls across India and beyond, and spread the message – that women have the right to live a life on their terms, and the right to make their own choices." [22] Her story has been called "a shining beacon of hope for young Kashmiri women who wish to break free from being relegated to the backseat". [23]

Academy owner

In 2019, at the age of 11 and with her father's help, Islam started her own kickboxing academy Haider Sports Academy in Bandipora where she trains young girls to compete in kickboxing. [24] [25] [26] [27] In January 2022 her academy had expanded to include more than 700 students spread over six locations. [28] The main academy is located in the local sports stadium, Muslim Abaad in Bandipora, all the other branches are located near government schools. In total the Academy employs 40–45 kickboxing coaches. [29]

After meeting with Islam Mehbooba Mufti, the head of government of Jammu and Kashmir called her achievements and boxing academy in Bandipora "a source of inspiration for Kashmiri girls". [30] In July 2021, Islam received a Kashmir Excellence Award. [31] In October 2022 she was nominated for a CNN-News18 Indian of the Year award for her achievements running a successful martial art school, [32] while the same month, India's Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, called her "India’s talented daughter" and "an inspiration to every Indian" after meeting her. [33]

On 22 October 2021 she returned to competition to win a second world title at the World Kickboxing Championship held in Cairo, in the under −14 category. [34] In 2022 Islam gave a TEDx talk untitled: "How to become a world champion and the role of Family". [35] In February 2023, on the way to a competition, she had to be evacuated by the Army, alongside 13 boys and 11 officials and coaches from her Academy after a mudslide closed the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway. [36]

Since 2020 her students have won several medals in state and national level championships which propped the local administration to help support her academy. Out of her 720 students, Islam also trains young women in self-defense. [37] [38]

Continuing advocacy

On International Women's Day, on 8 March 2023, she was invited to an event organised by the Indian Army in Kupwara where she gave a speech to motivate young local women to follow their dreams despite adversities. She talked about the challenges she faced in her own house and from society, about a time when a lot of people tried to dissuade her to follow her passion. [39] In April 2023, she was listed in News18 Rising India Summit 2023, a summit honouring "extraordinary social impact created by ordinary people". [40] [41]

Mehbooba Mufti is an Indian politician of the PDP, who served as the 9th and last Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. She was the first Female CM of J&K. After the revocation of the special status (autonomy) of the state in August 2019, Mufti was detained without any charges at first and later under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act. She was released only in October 2020, after the Supreme Court of India quizzed the government about the length of her detention.

Asiya Andrabi is a Kashmiri separatist and founding leader of Dukhtaran-e-Millat. This group is part of the separatist organisation All Parties Hurriyat Conference in the Kashmir valley. Government of India has declared it as a "banned organization". The organisation claims that it aims for the freedom of Kashmir from India.

Bandipore district is an administrative district of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in the disputed Kashmir region. It is one of the 20 districts in the Jammu and Kashmir. Bandipore town is the administrative headquarters of the district. Bandipore, a township with peculiar scenic beauty is located in the foothills of the snow-clad peaks of Harmukh overlooking the shores of Wular Lake and has produced hundreds of scholars and intellectuals. The district is famous for its tourist places such as Wular Vintage Park, Athwatoo and Gurez valley. Before 1947, this town was a big trade and literary centre of Kashmir. This district was carved out from the erstwhile Baramulla district in 2007. The district is bounded by Kupwara district from the north, Baramulla district from west and Kargil district in Ladakh and Ganderbal district from the east. This district occupies an area of 398 km2. The district has a population of 392,232 as per 2011 census.

Gurez, or Gurais, is a valley located in the high Himalayas, about 86 kilometres (53 mi) from Bandipore and 123 kilometres (76 mi) from Srinagar, to the north of the Kashmir valley. At about 2,400 metres (8,000 ft) above sea level, the valley is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. It has diverse fauna and wildlife including the Himalayan brown bear and the snow leopard. The Kishanganga River flows through the valley.

Human rights abuses in Kashmir have been perpetrated by various belligerents in the territories controlled by both India and Pakistan since the two countries' conflict over the region began with their first war in 1947–1948, shortly after the partition of British India. The organized breaches of fundamental human rights in Kashmir are tied to the contested territorial status of the region, over which India and Pakistan have fought multiple wars. More specifically, the issue pertains to abuses committed in Indian-administered Kashmir and in Pakistani-administered Kashmir.

Dr Nirmal Kumar Singh is an Indian politician and was the last Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State. He is a former Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. He is a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party. On 1 March 2015, he assumed the charge of the Minister for Power Development and Housing and Urban Development.

Begum Zaffar Ali, née Sahibzaadi Syeda Fatima, was an Indian women's rights activist and the first woman matriculate of the Indian state of Kashmir and Jammu who went on to become Inspector of Schools in Kashmir. She was an educationist, women's liberation activist, deputy director of education and later a legislator in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. She was associated with the activities of the All India Women's Conference and was its secretary before partition, but a chance meeting with Muhammad Ali Jinnah and his sister, Fatima Jinnah in Kashmir, who would later visit the family for banquets, influenced her and she left the conference to concentrate her efforts in women's liberation movements in the pre-independent India.

It started after the killing of militan leader Burhan Wani by Indian security forces on 8 July 2016. Wani was a commander of the Kashmir-based Islamist militant organisation Hizbul Mujahideen.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Stone pelting in Kashmir</span> Protest tactics in Kashmir

Stone pelting in Kashmir refers to stone throwing by Kashmiris on the Indian forces and Jammu and Kashmir Police deployed for crowd control in Jammu and Kashmir to support the extremists group or terrorists. In the local language, it is termed as "Kanni Jung", which means fighting with stones and the stone pelters are called as Sangbaaz or Pathraw Player. However, in the recent past the number of stone pelting has dropped significantly.

The Kashmir conflict has been beset by large scale usage of sexual violence by multiple belligerents since its inception.

On 10 July 2017, the first Monday of the month of Shraavana, 8 Hindu civilian pilgrims on the way from Amarnath Temple in Kashmir Valley, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, were killed in a terror attack. The pilgrims mostly belonged to the Indian state of Gujarat. Eight people were killed and at least 18 people were injured in the attack.

Women's rights in Jammu and Kashmir is a major issue. Belonging to a patriarchal society, they have had to fight inequality and routine discrimination. Since the onset of insurgency in 1988, rape has been leveraged as a popular 'weapon of war' by Indian security forces. Separatist militants have also committed rapes, which remain under-researched but are not comparable in scale to that of the Indian state forces. Women's rights in Kashmir Valley has major issues as there is harassment of young muslim women participating in sports activities, demands of dowry after marriage, domestic violence incidents, acid attacks on women, and men being generally taken in a higher regard than women. Many small organisations have been formed to struggle for women's rights in Jammu and Kashmir.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Indian Army operations in Jammu and Kashmir</span> Military opration

Indian Army operations in Jammu and Kashmir include security operations such as Operation Rakshak, which began in 1990, Operation Sarp Vinash in 2003 and Operation Randori Behak in 2020. Other operations include humanitarian missions such as Operation Megh Rahat and operations with a social aim such as Operation Goodwill and Operation Calm Down. The Indian Army works in tandem with the other arms of the Indian Armed Forces and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir such as during Mission Sahayata or joint operations.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sports in Jammu and Kashmir</span> Overview of sports traditions and activities

Popular sports in Jammu and Kashmir include cricket, football and winter sports along with sports like golf, water sports, Ice stock sport and adventure sports. The National Winter Games have been held in Gulmarg in 1996, 2004 and 2009. The first Khelo India Winter Games were held in February and March 2020 in Leh and Gulmarg. Jammu and Kashmir won the most gold medals while the Indian Army team came second with 8 gold medals. The second edition of the winter games were also held successfully in Gulmarg in 2020 with Jammu and Kashmir coming first and Karnataka second.

Media in Jammu and Kashmir consists of media houses such as Greater Kashmir, Kashmir Observer, Rising Kashmir and Daily Excelsior and digital news outlets like The Dispatch , Free Press Kashmir, The Chenab Times, The Kashmir Walla, The Kashmiriyat News and radio stations such as AIR Srinagar, AIR Jammu,Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM, Red FM 93.5 and Radio Sharda. DD Kashir is state television broadcaster. Major private channels are News18 Urdu and Gulistan News.

He wrote biography of Islamic Prophet Muhammad, leading him to become the first Kashmiri writer to cover the life of Muhammad.

Faisal Ali Dar is an Indian martial arts coach, and first person to receive the Padma Shri Award in sports from the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. He was conferred with the national award for his contributions in promoting sports through martial arts and his works for keeping the youth away from drugs.
