Takaya Honda (born 6 September 1987) is an actor and television presenter. He is perhaps best known for his roles as Josh in the children's television series A gURLs wURLd , Klaus Thomson in the comedy series The Family Law and David Tanaka in Neighbours . Honda has also presented episodes of My Great Big Adventure and Play School .

Early and personal life

Honda was born in Canberra, but moved to Sydney when he was young. [2] Both of his parents coached gymnastics. His father, Kazuya Honda, was the coach for the Australia women's national gymnastics team. [3] He attended Barker College and graduated in 2005. The following year he briefly attended UNSW College of Fine Arts, studying digital media, before he transferred to the University of Technology Sydney, where he studied a Bachelor of Arts in communication. [2] Honda was a talented junior baseball player and at one stage considered playing at College level in the United States. [4]

Honda became an ambassador for Dementia Australia in 2017. [5] His mother Rhonda was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2009 when she was 52 years old. [6] Honda announced the death of his mother in August 2023. [7]

Honda became engaged to his partner Amy Schwab in May 2019, [8] and they married in November 2020. [9]

Career

Honda was invited to perform with the Sport For Jove Theatre Company by its founding member Damien Ryan. It led to him receiving representation within the acting industry. [2] Honda has appeared on the Australian stage in the company's 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 summer festivals of outdoor Shakespeare; The Sydney Hills Shakespeare in the Park, The Leura Shakespeare Festival and The Sydney Morning Herald Autumn of the Arts Shakespeare in the Gardens. He performed as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream , Paris in Romeo and Juliet and Dennis and Forester in As You Like It . [10] [11] In 2012 and 2013 he also appeared in the company's critically acclaimed production of Hamlet . [12]

From 2010, Honda began playing Josh in the children's television series A gURLs wURLd . [3] The series was Honda's first audition and first television role. [2] Honda appeared in an episode of The Code in 2014. [13] He also joined the presenting team of ABC3 series My Great Big Adventure , along with Kayne Tremills, Stephanie Bendixsen and Nancy Denis. [14] The following year, he became a presenter on Play School , [3] and appeared in the drama film Skin Deep. [15] In 2016, Honda joined the cast of The Family Law as Klaus Thomson. [16] Honda was part of the ensemble cast that won two Equity Ensemble Awards. [4] In 2017, he appeared in Lincoln Hall's comedy drama film Naked Strangers. [17] He also starred in Peter William Francis' short film Boyz filmed in Kurnell. [18]

Honda also joined the main cast of long-running soap opera Neighbours as David Tanaka in 2016. He made his first appearance on 21 September 2016. [19] Alongside Matt Wilson, Honda was part of the first same-sex marriage in an Australian television series since being legalised in Australia in 2017. [20] The wedding episode aired on 3 September 2018. [21] Honda told producers that he planned to leave Neighbours in 2021 in order to pursue new acting roles, but he stayed on until 2022 when the serial was cancelled. [22] He was asked to return to finish off David's story when Neighbours was revived in 2023, which he agreed to do. [22] His character was killed-off during the episode released on 1 February 2024, after producers realised that it was the only way David would ever leave his family. [22]

In December 2022, Honda signed on to star in Joy Hopwood's romantic comedy film The Gift That Gives, alongside Lily Brown-Griffiths, HaiHa Le, and Damien Sato. [23] Released in 2023, The Gift That Gives won Best Film at the New York International Women's Film Festival. [24]

Aaron Brennan is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Matt Wilson. The actor originally auditioned for the role of Tyler Brennan and participated in a long casting process, during which he sent the producers a recording of himself performing a scene, before attending an audition. Producers ultimately selected Travis Burns to play Tyler, but created the additional role of Aaron for Wilson. Like Tyler, Aaron was introduced as the brother of established character Mark Brennan. Wilson relocated from Sydney to Melbourne for filming, and debuted four months after Tyler's arrival, on 16 June 2015. The character was initially intended to be a guest part, but due to Wilson's "endearing quality", he was promoted to the full-time cast.

He made his first appearance in the main show during the episode broadcast on 21 September 2016. The character was introduced alongside his twin brother Leo Tanaka, and they arrive in Erinsborough to find their long-lost biological father. The show's producer had planned their stories out six months in advance and was excited about the prospect of them joining the series. Both Honda and Kano auditioned for both roles and were later awarded their respective parts. David is characterised as the more self-conscious and socially awkward of the Tanaka twins, but he is career minded and confident in his role as a doctor.

Geoff Paine is an Australian television and theatre actor from Melbourne. After graduating from drama school Paine secured a role on the soap opera Neighbours, playing the role of doctor Clive Gibbons. He remained in the role for one year before leaving to pursue other projects. He returned to the role briefly in 1989, with the opportunity to appear in a spin-off series based on the character, but no television network would produce the show. Paine continued his career with roles in A Country Practice and the comedy sketch show The Comedy Company. He also concentrated on his stage career gaining roles in productions that toured Australia, including various projects at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Neighbours celebrated its 35th anniversary during the week comprising 16–20 March 2020. This consisted of the five regular weekday episodes as well as five extra episodes as part of a series titled Neighbours: Endgame, aired as the second part to the regular episodes.

Yashvi Rebecchi is a fictional character from the Australian television soap opera Neighbours, played by Olivia Junkeer. She was created when producers struggled to find the right male actor to play the Rebecchis' son, which resulted in them changing the character's gender at the last moment. Yashvi was introduced along with her parents, sister and aunt as part of an expansion of the serial's Rebecchi family. Junkeer auditioned for the role shortly after finishing her last year of school. She doubted she would win the part, as the producers thought she was too old for the role. However, she learned she had been cast in December 2016 and she started on set the following month. Junkeer was pleased to be representing fellow women of colour on Australian television and said her on-screen family represented her own mixed-race family. She made her first appearance in the episode broadcast on 24 April 2017. Junkeer also played the role in the 2019 spin-off series Erinsborough High.

<i>Neighbours</i>: The Finale Episode of Neighbours

"Neighbours: The Finale" comprises the 8901st, 8902nd and 8903rd episodes of the Australian television soap opera Neighbours. It premiered on 28 July 2022 on both Network 10 and 10 Peach in Australia, and on 29 July on Channel 5 in the United Kingdom. It was conceived as the end of the serial, after it was cancelled due to the loss of its UK broadcaster and failure to find an alternative buyer, and production ceased after it was filmed. The episodes were written by Shane Isheev and executive producer Jason Herbison, and directed by Scott Major. Production on Neighbours ended on 10 June. Production and cast had known the show was facing cancellation since 2021 and ideas for a suitable finale were already being planned at that point. In response to the news of the show's potential cancellation becoming public in early 2022, an online petition amassed more than 67,000 signatures to save the show. The petition did not change Channel 5's decision, who maintained that Neighbours remained popular and ending the show was solely a "business decision". Production were then tasked with bringing the show to an end within a few months. Herbison had already envisioned an ideal way to end the series, and Isheev and other writers supported his plans. Herbison did not wish to end the show with excessive finality, such as in the destruction of the primary location of Ramsay Street, and opted for a celebratory theme that acknowledged the show's history.
