Tales of Us is the sixth studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp,released on 6 September 2013 by Mute Records. In June 2013,the duo embarked on the Tales of Us Tour to promote the album.
Goldfrapp began recording their sixth studio album in April 2011, [2] recording in the English countryside,then mixing in London. [3] [4] A re-launch of the band's official website was synchronised with the announcement,which featured a video trailer directed by Lisa Gunning. [5] [6] The duo debuted songs from Tales of Us at the Manchester International Festival on 17 and 18 July 2013. [3]
The track "Drew" premiered on 15 July 2013 on Lauren Laverne's BBC Radio 6 Music morning show. [7] [8] On the same day,the full Lisa Gunning-directed "Drew" music video was uploaded to the duo's website and to YouTube. [9] "Thea" was released on 24 March 2014 as the first official single from the album. [10]
On 20 January 2014,Goldfrapp announced a one-off screening of their thirty-minute film anthology Tales of Us,which was shown by Arts Alliance Media in select theatres across the UK,Europe,North America,Australia and New Zealand on the evening of 4 March. Co-created by Alison Goldfrapp and Gunning,the film follows five characters—Stranger,Laurel,Jo,Drew and Annabel—and spans themes of love,loss,madness and identity. The film was followed immediately by an exclusive live performance by Goldfrapp transmitted into cinemas from AIR Studios in London. [11] [12] [13]
The song "Annabel" was inspired by Kathleen Winter's 2010 novel of the same name,about an intersex child being raised as a boy. [14] Gunning,who directed the video for the song,optioned feature-film rights to the novel in 2014. [14] "Clay" is based on a letter written by World War II veteran Brian Keith to his lover,another soldier known as "Dave". [15]

Tales of Us received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic,which assigns a weighted mean rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics,the album received an average score of 75,based on 26 reviews. [17] AllMusic wrote that although "Tales of Us isn't as immediate as,say, Supernature ",it is "Goldfrapp's most sophisticated work to date,and one of their most consistently satisfying albums." [18] Jordan Mainzer of musicOMH viewed the album's aesthetic as "striking" and "noticeably starker than anything [Goldfrapp have] made before",concluding,"This is real music,about real people,dealing in real emotion. That it sounds so gorgeously lush too is mere icing on a very rich cake." [23] Andy Gill of The Independent stated,"The delicate guitar and piano figures and the sombre languor of strings behind Alison Goldfrapp's breathy vocals create something akin to a cross between the dreamlike mythopoeism of old folk tales and the lush cinematic arrangements of Michel Legrand." [21]
Mojo critic David Hutcheon opined that compared to Felt Mountain and Seventh Tree ,"the mood [on Tales of Us] is all of a piece,the songs are stronger,and nobody suggests lightening the atmosphere with a high-energy single to reassure listeners that Alison hasn't taken leave of her senses." [22] Slant Magazine's Blue Sullivan praised the vocals as "simultaneously gorgeous and terrifying" and dubbed the album "a vital change of pace for Alison Goldfrapp,who's made a brilliant career of being the siren of lost souls." [27] Ryan Lathan of PopMatters noted that "Alison has rarely sounded this captivating and the album contains some of the loveliest vocal performances she's recorded thus far." Lathan continued,"Goldfrapp have seemingly rekindled their creative fires and the result is a challenging and devastatingly beautiful record." [26]
Will Salmon of Clash called the album a "frequently beautiful return to form" and commented that "Tales Of Us is relentlessly one note but frequently beautiful,and a welcome change from the theatrics of its immediate predecessor,2010's Head First" [19] In a more mixed review,Pitchfork Media's Andrew Ryce felt that "some of the duo's unique imagination is replaced with a traditionalism that feels incongruous with the rest of their career",adding that "[d]iehard fans of Goldfrapp will no doubt find something to love here,but for the rest of us,it's a thin record that doesn't do much to prop up its skeletal frame." [25] The Guardian 's Dave Simpson argued that "the tunes don't all carry the album's single pace. As a result,Tales of Us is slightly more mesmerising soundscape than collection of genuinely outstanding songs." [20] Jeremy Allen of the NME was negative in his review,panning the album as "samey and indulgent". [24] Consequence of Sound said that the album was Goldfrapp's "most intimate and lavish recording to date",and that it moved away from previous electronic/disco stylings to form "a complex mesh between trip-hop and lounge." [28]
Tales of Us debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 13,817 copies,earning Goldfrapp their fourth consecutive top ten studio album. [29] The album fell to number nineteen the following week,selling 4,484 units. [30] Internationally,Tales of Us reached the top ten in Belgium,Germany and Switzerland,and the top twenty in Australia,Ireland,Netherlands,Norway and Portugal. [31] [32]

Felt Mountain is the debut studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp. It was released on 11 September 2000 by Mute Records. The album takes influence from a variety of music styles such as 1960s pop, cabaret, folk and electronica.
Black Cherry is the second studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp, released on 23 April 2003 by Mute Records. It marked a departure from the ambient sound of their debut album, Felt Mountain (2000), incorporating glam rock and synth-pop music; inspirations were Spanish disco group Baccara and Swedish techno artist Håkan Lidbo. The album was met with positive reviews, with many critics complimenting its blend of retro and modern electropop music.
Supernature is the third studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp, released on 17 August 2005 by Mute Records. The album received generally favourable reviews, with most critics complimenting its blend of pop and electronic music. It debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 52,976 copies, and has been certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). Supernature has sold one million copies worldwide.

A Girl like Me is the second studio album by Barbadian singer Rihanna. It was released on April 10, 2006, by Def Jam Recordings. For the production of the album, Rihanna worked with Evan Rogers, Carl Sturken, Stargate, J. R. Rotem, and label-mate Ne-Yo, who wrote the album's second single. A Girl like Me is a pop and reggae album influenced by Rihanna's Caribbean roots. Seventh Tree is the fourth studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp, released on 22 February 2008 by Mute Records. It was named after a dream Alison Goldfrapp had about a "very large tree". Taking inspiration from paganism and surreal English children's books, Goldfrapp described the album as a "sensual counterpoint to the glitterball glamour of Supernature", their previous studio album from 2005.
Head First is the fifth studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp, released 19 March 2010 by Mute Records. The album debuted at number six on the UK Albums Chart, selling 23,261 copies in its first week. It was supported by three singles: "Rocket", "Alive" and "Believer". Head First received a nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards.
The Glee cast has released sixteen soundtrack albums, six compilation albums and eleven extended plays (EPs), containing 754 different performances of an individual song or a mashup of two or more songs in a single performance. Of the performances on the various albums and EPs, 460 were also released as singles. Glee features on-screen performance-based musical numbers, most of which are cover versions of popular songs, with genres ranging from R&B and pop to country and show tunes. The cast consists of fifteen main characters; some actors were cast following Broadway theatre experience while others were required to audition to prove singing and dancing capabilities. Who You Are is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter Jessie J. It was released on 28 February 2011 by Lava Records, Island Records and Universal Republic Records. In such a high demand and interest from fans, the release was advanced by a month from 28 March, as previously planned. Settle is the debut studio album by English electronic music duo Disclosure, released on June 3, 2013, by PMR Records and Island Records. Accompanied by the success of its lead single, "Latch", featuring Sam Smith, the album features collaborations with AlunaGeorge, Ed Macfarlane of Friendly Fires, Sasha Keable, Eliza Doolittle, Jamie Woon, Jessie Ware, and London Grammar. A deluxe edition of the album contains four bonus tracks, including Disclosure's remix of Ware's song "Running".
Trouble is the second studio album by English singer Teddy Sinclair under the name Natalia Kills. It was released on 3 September 2013 by Cherrytree Records through will.i.am Music Group and Interscope. Recording for the album started in early 2012 and took place in Los Angeles and New York. During that time, Sinclair was accompanied by producers including Jeff Bhasker, who served as Trouble's executive producer and handled the production, instrumentation and songwriting.
True is the debut studio album by Swedish electronic music producer Avicii, released on 13 September 2013 by PRMD Music, Lava Records and Sony Music Entertainment's Columbia Records. Avicii said that sonically, the album would move away from his earlier house music sound on previous records by incorporating elements of other genres such as country music. True was preceded by the release of the Aloe Blacc-assisted "Wake Me Up" that featured a rare Marantz Enhanced Digital Stereo audio track and topped several charts around the world, and "You Make Me", which features vocals from Swedish artist Salem Al Fakir.
Word of Mouth is the third studio album by English-Irish boy band the Wanted. The album was released worldwide via Island Records on 4 November 2013. The album was preceded by the release of six singles: "Chasing the Sun", "I Found You", "Walks Like Rihanna", "We Own the Night", "Show Me Love (America)" and "Glow in the Dark", the latter of which was released two weeks prior to the album. Food is the sixth studio album by American singer Kelis. It was released on April 18, 2014, becoming her first album released under Ninja Tune Records. After parting ways with Jive Records in 2007, Kelis signed to Interscope and will.i.am Music Group in 2009, through the label she released her fifth studio album, Flesh Tone, which saw Kelis experiment with a dance sound. In 2011, Kelis began work on the follow-up to Flesh Tone; however, she left Interscope and signed to Federal Prism, before officially signing to the British independent label Ninja Tune for the release of Food. Food is an R&B and soul album with a diverse musical style that incorporates funk, Afrobeat, Memphis soul, and neo soul. Its songs feature crackling horns, brass, earthy guitars, simmering electronics and vocals from Kelis that were noted as being breathy, smoky and sultry.

The album received positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 76, based on 19 reviews, which indicates "generally favorable reviews". No Mythologies to Follow debuted at number 58 on the UK Albums Chart, selling 1,438 copies in its first week.
Goddess is the debut studio album by American singer and songwriter Banks, released on September 5, 2014, by Harvest Records. The album includes songs from her previous extended plays Fall Over and London. The album spawned four singles: "Warm Water", "Brain", "Drowning", and "Beggin for Thread". A companion remix album, Goddess Remixes, was released digitally on March 23, 2015.
5 Seconds of Summer is the debut studio album by Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer. It was released by Capitol Records on 27 June 2014 in Europe and on 22 July 2014 in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The album was supported by four singles: "She Looks So Perfect", "Don't Stop", "Amnesia", and "Good Girls". Musically, the album is rooted in the pop-punk, pop-rock and power-pop genres. Before the album's release, the band was the opening act for One Direction in from 2013-2015 on three of their concert tours. Silver Eye is the seventh studio album by English electronic music duo Goldfrapp, released on 31 March 2017 by Mute Records. The album's first single, "Anymore", was released to digital music retailers on 23 January 2017 after its premiere on Lauren Laverne's BBC Radio 6 show.
