Tanika Charles is a Canadian soul and rhythm and blues singer, who released her full-length debut album Soul Run in 2016. [1]

Formerly based in Edmonton, Alberta, [2] Charles moved to Toronto, Ontario in the late 2000’s after an opportunity to sing backing vocals for Bedouin Soundclash was offered. [2] Since then, Tanika has performed as a backing vocalist for Johnny Reid, Serena Ryder, Emmanuel Jal, and many others. Tanika performed as a solo artist under the stage name Ms. Chawlz, before releasing her debut EP What! What? What!? in 2010. [3]

She released "Soul Run", the title track from her full-length album, as a preview single in fall 2015, [4] and followed up with "Two Steps" in April 2016. [4] Both singles were playlisted on CBC Radio 2, and charted on the Radio 2 Top 20 . The full album was released on May 10, [4] and was supported by her first extensive concert tour [5] and an advance appearance on CBC Radio One's Q . [6] In June, the album was named to the longlist for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize, [7] and in 2017 it was shortlisted for the Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2017.

Charles has also appeared on television both as a reoccurring guest on CBC Kids, and as a lounge singer on the Global drama series Bomb Girls . Her music has been featured on HBO Canada's Less Than Kind , CBC's Workin' Moms , Global's Rookie Blue , Citytv's Seed , and CTV's Saving Hope .

In 2019, Charles released her second album, The Gumption, on Record Kicks. [8]

Her 2017 EP, Kiddo, led to four nominations at the 2018 Juno Awards, winning Breakthrough Artist. Her follow up EP, Being Human in Public, was released in 2018. It won R&B/Soul Recording of the Year at the 2019 Juno Awards and was nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Reyez again won the R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, for "Feel it Too" with Tory Lanez and Tainy, at the 2020 Juno Awards, where she was also nominated for Artist of the Year. Reyez has written songs for Calvin Harris, Kehlani, Dua Lipa and Normani, most notably penning the hit "One Kiss", and has collaborated with Eminem on multiple occasions. Haviah Mighty is a Canadian rapper from Brampton, Ontario. She rose to prominence in 2016 as a member of the hip hop group the Sorority, before releasing several EPs on her own, most notably Flower City, in 2017. After her debut, XXL named her one of the "15 Toronto rappers you should know" and CBC Music called her one of the "New Faces of Canadian Hip Hop".

The 2019 edition of the Canadian Polaris Music Prize was presented on September 16, 2019. Haviah Mighty won the $50,000 dollar prize for her debut album 13th Floor, becoming the first Black woman and first hip hop artist to win the prize.

Soul Run is the debut full-length album from Canadian R&B artist Tanika Charles, first released independently in Canada on May 10, 2016, and internationally on April 7, 2017 through Record Kicks. It was long-listed for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize and nominated for the 2017 Juno Awards R&B/Soul Recording of the Year alongside The Weeknd, Daniel Caesar, dvsn and PARTYNEXTDOOR. Shortly after self-releasing the album in Canada, Tanika Charles signed with Italian funk/soul label Record Kicks. The international release that followed in 2017 included the additional song “Sweet Memories”.

Begonia is the stage name of Alexa Dirks, a Canadian pop singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is most noted for her 2019 album Fear, which was longlisted for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize and shortlisted for the Juno Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2021.
