Alhaji Tanko Yakasai OFR (born 5 December 1925) is a Nigerian politician, human rights activist and former Liaison Officer to President Shehu Shagari. He is a founding member of Arewa Consultative Forum. [1] [2]
Yakasai was born on 5 December 1925 in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, Yakasai Quarters Kano. He resides in Kano with his family. One of his children, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, was the social media aide of the governor of Kano State until he was arrested by Department of State Services at the end of February 2021. [3] [4]
Between 1953 and 1986, Tanko Yakasai was one of the most persecuted[ weasel words ] politicians in the history of Nigerian political activism, he was subjected to arrests and detentions on ten different occasions: four during colonial era, four in the First Republic, and two during military regime: one each under the (1983 to 1985) regime of General Muhammad Buhari and (1985 to 1993) regime of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

In 1976, he became the Federal Commissioner of public complaints, a position that made him the nation's pioneer ombudsman. He was appointed Nigeria's representative to the United Nations after the coming of civilian rule in September 1979. While there he was chairman of the United Nations Special Committee against Apartheid.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) is a political and cultural association of leaders in Northern Nigeria formed in 2000 which has considerable influence in the political scene. The forum is a successor to the Northern People's Congress, which collapsed after the coup of 1966. The ACF has been associated with the Arewa People's Congress (APC), a militant group set up to protect the interests of the Hausa-Fulani people in the north. However, the forum is committed to democratic processes within the Federal constitution.

Laila Dogonyaro was a Nigerian activist who was president of the National Council of Women's Societies from 1993 to 1995. In the early 1970s, she was Secretary of Jam'iyyar Matan Arewa, a women's welfare organization.
Ibrahim Bata Malgwi Haruna is a retired officer of the Nigerian Army. He was a Federal Commissioner for Information and Culture between 1975 and 1977. He was also the Chairman, Executive Council, of Arewa Consultative Forum from 2009 to 2012. He holds the traditional title of Walin Garkida. He has notably been accused for ordering the Asaba Massacre, an atrocity committed during the Nigerian Civil War, but this is actually untrue; the massacre was ordered by Ibrahim Taiwo, as Haruna was not in command at that area. Ahmed Joda OFR, CON, CFR was a Nigerian administrator who rose through the administrative cadre of the Northern regional government and then the federal civil service to retire as Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industries. During the administration of the youthful Yakubu Gowon, he was considered to be among a group known as super Permanent Secretaries.
