Tendra Spit is a sandbar in the Black Sea and part of Kherson Oblast in Ukraine.

Contents

The island serves as a separation of the Gulf of Tendra from the Black Sea and is located at the southern and western part of the bay. In the west the island has a spit Bili Kuchuhury which, stretching east through the Gulf of Tendra as a shoal, reaches the Yahorlyk Kut peninsula. Bili Kuchuhury has the Bili Kuchuhury Lighthouse.

Tendra Lighthouse is also on the island.

History

The Battle of Tendra took place on 8 and 9 September 1790.

The mutiny of men on board the Russian battleship Potemkin took place off Tendra Spit in June 1905.

During Russian invasion of Ukraine on the night of 28 February 2024 Ukrainian Special Operations Forces troops from 73rd Maritime Special Operations Center attempted to make a landing on the sandbar. They were ambushed by the Russian troops and sustained heavy casualties. According to Russian MOD out of 5 boats 4 were destroyed or sunk and up to 25 Ukrainian soldiers were killed. One Ukrainian soldier was captured. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Dzharylhach is a sand bank in Skadovsk Raion, Kherson Oblast near Crimea in Ukraine. Along with the Tendra island that lies to the west, in the past it was a spit that Greeks called "Course of Achilles". To the west it stretches as a spit and as a shoal, which sometimes dries up, and connects to the continental portion of Kherson Oblast near the town of Lazurne. The wider portion used to be called Tamyraca. It was named after an ancient town of Tamyraca located on the continent across the bay.

The 2nd Battalion of Special Assignment "Donbas" is a unit of the National Guard of Ukraine subordinated to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and based in Severodonetsk. Originally created in 2014 as a volunteer unit called the Donbas Battalion by Semen Semenchenko following the Russian occupation of Crimea and possible invasion of continental Ukraine. The formation of the unit started in the spring of 2014 during the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine. The unit was initially formed as an independent force, but has been since fully integrated into the National Guard as the 2nd Special Purpose Battalion "Donbas" within the 15th Regiment of the National Guard.

The Russian military intervention in the Syrian civil war started on 30 September 2015, with 4,000 Russian military personnel being stationed in Syria. The Russian forces also consisted of 25 strategic bombers, 20 tactical bombers, 12 attack bombers, 8 fighter aircraft, 16 attack helicopters and various other aircraft.

A series of Molotov cocktail arson attacks and shootings have taken place in Russian military commissariat registration and enlistment offices since the start of the country's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Other governmental buildings have also been attacked in multiple regions of Russia. Part of the Russian partisan and anti-war movements, the attacks were spurred by several factors, including the outbreak of the invasion of Ukraine, the deployment of Russian conscripts to the front line, the start of spring conscription, and rumors about possible mobilization in the country, which were later found to be true. Commissariat offices recruit servicemen to the Russian Army and choose who is eligible and ineligible for service. On the morning of 13 May 2023, an air group of four aircraft of the Russian Air Force crashed almost simultaneously in the Bryansk Oblast of Russia: two Mi-8 helicopters, a Su-34 fighter-bomber and a Su-35 fighter. According to Baza, nine people were killed: three crew members each in two Mi-8s, two Su-34 pilots and a Su-35 pilot.

The Battle of the Tendra Spit was an engagement that took place on the Tendra Spit, a narrow spit of land in the Kherson Oblast, on the Black Sea, northwest of the Crimean Peninsula from the night of 28 February 2024 to the morning of 29 February 2024.
