Partisan Records is an independent record label with offices in London and Los Angeles, as well as in New York City, where the company was co-founded in 2007 by Tim Putnam and Ian Wheeler. The label, initially run out of Putnam’s South Brooklyn apartment, relocated in 2009 to their flagship office in Williamsburg where they still reside. Holy Sons was the first release on the label, and early success followed shortly thereafter with the release of Deer Tick.
War Elephant is the debut album by Deer Tick. It was originally released September 4, 2007 on FEOW! Records. After parting ways with their label, Deer Tick continued touring without a repress of the album they were supporting. Partisan Records re-released War Elephant on November 11, 2008.

His "moody lyrics and accomplished guitar playing have drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen and John Fahey, and his voice, in its lower register, is eerily reminiscent of early Bob Dylan." He has also been compared to Townes Van Zandt, John Martyn, Donovan, and Nick Drake, and his music has been described as both "emotionally resonant" and "delicate".

Produced by Cosmic Thug production duo Adam Landry and Justin Collins, the album was the first to feature the current lineup of the band and displayed a louder and faster sound than previous releases, with the band aiming to capture “the raw and spontaneous kerosene blaze”.
