The Headies 2022 was the 15th edition of Nigerian music awards The Headies. It held at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia, United States on 4 September 2022. [1] Hosted by Anthony Anderson & Osas Ighodaro.
Wizkid lead nominations with ten, [2] Tems and Ayra Starr with eight each. Davido and Adekunle received seven each. The Songwriter of the Year category included in the 2020 edition of The Headies, was renamed to Best Song Writer of the Year, in the 2022 edition.
Nominees were announced on 24 May 2022, ahead of the main event which was held at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, on 2 July 2022. [3]
2022 edition has seven additional categories include; Best Afrobeat Pop Single (Nigeria), Best Afrobeat Pop Album (Nigeria), Best African Collaboration, Best International Collaboration, African Artist of the Year, International Artist of the Year, and Music Executive of the Year. [4] On 25 June 2022, the executive held the first-ever Headies Brunch, titled "Unveiling The First Ever Global Awards For Afrobeats Music". [5] with music from SPINALL, Major League DJz, Pius Gallery and Pheelz. The private brunch was held in Los Angeles. [5]

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known professionally as Wizkid, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. A prominent figure in the modern-day Afrobeats music scene, Wizkid is regarded as one of the biggest and most influential African artists of all time. He began recording music at the age of 11 and released a collaborative album with the Glorious Five (5), a group he and a couple of his church friends formed. In 2009, Wizkid signed a record deal with Banky W's Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E). He later rose to the limelight after releasing "Holla at Your Boy", the lead single from his debut studio album, Superstar (2011), which also spawned the singles "Tease Me/Bad Guys" and "Don't Dull".
The Headies is a music awards show established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry. The annual ceremony features performances by established and promising artists. It is broadcast live on HipTV to viewers across Nigeria. The first and second editions of The Headies were held at the Muson Center in Onikan, Lagos State. Between 2010 and 2012, the awards were held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. Several media personalities in Nigeria have hosted the annual ceremony, including Darey Art Alade, D'banj, Dakore Egbuson, Banky W., Rita Dominic, M.I, Tiwa Savage and Dr SID.
Osabuohien Osaretin, better known by his stage name Sarz, is a Nigerian record producer, mixing engineer and musician. Born in Benin City, Edo State, he is popularly known for the tag Sarz On The Beat/"Really", at the beginning or end of all his music productions.
Niniola Apata, known professionally as Niniola, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. She participated in the sixth season of Project Fame West Africa in 2013. After releasing her debut single "Ibadi", she was nominated for Most Promising Act to Watch at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Chike Ezekpeazu Osebuka, born on January 28, 1993, is a Nigerian individual involved in various artistic endeavors such as acting, songwriting, and singing. He is recognized by his stage name Chike. Chike gained prominence by participating in the Nigerian reality competition Project Fame West Africa, where he achieved the second position during Season 1. Additionally, he showcased his talents on The Voice Nigeria, securing a notable position. Chike ventured into acting by making his debut as Mayoma Badmus on the Africa Magic Showcase telenovela Battleground. He also appeared in the production Gang of Lagos, portraying the character Ify.
Divine Ikubor, known professionally as Rema, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and rapper. He rose to stardom after releasing the song "Dumebi". In 2019, Rema got signed to Jonzing World record owned by D'Prince who has an affiliation with Mavin Records. He is best known internationally for his 2022 hit single "Calm Down", the remix of which, with Selena Gomez, peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and led the U.S. Afrobeats Songs for a record-setting 41 weeks.
Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. She rose to prominence after being featured on Wizkid's 2020 single "Essence", which peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart following the release of the remix version with Justin Bieber. The song earned her a Grammy Award nomination. That same year, she was featured on the song "Fountains" by Drake.
Made in Lagos is the fourth studio album by Nigerian singer Wizkid. It was released on 30 October 2020 by Starboy Entertainment and RCA Records. The album features guest appearances from Burna Boy, Skepta, H.E.R., Ella Mai, Tay Iwar, Projexx, Tems, Damian Marley, Terri and was executive produced by P2J. The deluxe edition was released on 27 August 2021. It features additional guest appearances from Buju and Justin Bieber. In support of the album, Wizkid embarked on the Made in Lagos Tour (2021–2022). The album received a nomination at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Global Music Album.
"Essence" is a song by Nigerian singer Wizkid, featuring fellow Nigerian singer Tems. It was released on 30 October 2020, as the fourth single from Wizkid's fourth studio album, Made in Lagos. "Essence" was produced by P2J and Legendury Beatz. The "sensual" song sees the duo express their desire for each other. A music video was released on 9 April 2021, shot in Accra, Ghana. "Essence" is the first Nigerian song in history to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. The song received a nomination at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Global Music Performance.
Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, known professionally as Ayra Starr, is a Beninese-born Nigerian singer. She began a fashion career at the age of 16 with Quove Model Management before deciding to pursue a career in music. After covering several songs by popular artists on Instagram, she posted her first original song on her page in December 2019. This brought her to the attention of record executive Don Jazzy, who signed her to his record label Mavin Records.
Abiola Ahmed Akinbiyi, professionally known as Bella Shmurda, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter from Ikorodu, Lagos. He rose to prominence in 2019 with the release of the song "Vision 2020", and a follow-up remix which featured Nigeria rapper Olamide. He is also the leader of Dangbana Republik; a collective of creatives in Lagos providing community and humanitarian contributions.
Aremu Olaiwola Qudus is a Nigerian music video director. He has worked with artists of several musical genres including Wizkid, Skepta, Davido, Burna Boy and many others, winning 2020 The Headies Award for best music video of the year.
Jamiu Damilare Tajudeen known professionally as Jamopyper, is a Nigerian Afrobeat singer and songwriter Jamopyper signed a record deal with Zlatan ibile "Zanku Records in 2020. he was nominated for Rookie of Year at The Headies 2020.
Chukwuka Chukwuma Ekweani is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer signed to Warner Music South Africa and Atlantic Records. He was formerly signed to Chocolate City, a member of Warner Music Group independent label services ADA. His international hit single "Love Nwantiti", also known as "Love Nwantiti ", was released in 2019 by Chocolate City. On 29 March 2022, the song debuted at number one, following the launch of the Billboard Afrobeats chart. On 9 May 2022, it became the first-ever African song to surpass one billion streams on Spotify and has since been deemed "the biggest hit in African history".
Akano Samuel is a Nigerian record producer. He is known for producing "Damages" for Tems and executive producing Oxygene by Oxlade.
Daniel Benson, known professionally as Bnxn and formerly known as Buju, is a Nigerian Afro-fusion singer, songwriter and record producer.
Donald Ofik, popularly known as Prettyboy D-O, is a Nigerian recording artist with chaotic blend of Afrobeats, hip hop, alté, dancehall, and R&B. His debut mixtape Everything Pretty reached the number one spot on iTunes. He was nominated for The Headies 2022 Best Reggae and Dancehall Album.
Euphamiarunyi Ekunah, better known as GoodGirl LA, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. In 2022, she was nominated with Vector for The Headies awards for best collaboration and best rap single for "Early Momo".
