The Reader Magazine is a free, printed, quarterly magazine based in Redlands, California, containing public interest journalism. It has a circulation of 390,000 by mail. [3]

History

The Reader Magazine was founded by Christopher Theodore in November 2000 and was originally called The Redlands Community Coupon Book. The first issue appeared in January 2001. [4] The first issue was a twelve-page coupon magazine with four-pages of community news mailed to 30,000 households. From 2002 to 2004, the publication was called The Redlands Reader during which time The Yucaipa Reader was launched, which increased the circulation to 60,000 households.

In 2005, the name of the publication was changed to The Reader Magazine and circulation doubled to 120,000 households by including the cities of: Banning, Beaumont, Colton, Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, Highland, and San Bernardino. [5] As of 2015, the largest Reader Magazine of the four regional publications is 40-pages, half news content and half local advertising. The four Reader Magazines are mailed to a total of 390,000 persons in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

In March 2018, Noble Media, which owns Reader, raised $200,000 in capital from the Valley Economic Development Center (VEDC), a non-profit community funder. [6]

Controversy

In 2011, The Reader Magazine was described in the Columbia Journalism Review as employing a business model based on plagiarism, when they identified a number of cases of suspected plagiarism in the publication. [7] [8] These accusations were denied by The Reader. The Reader undertook legal action against the Columbia Journalism Review and the article's author. The Columbia Journalism Review subsequently reported that The Reader appeared to have reformed. [9] [10]

The Sunday Tribune was an Irish Sunday broadsheet newspaper published by Tribune Newspapers plc. The decline of newspapers in the 21st century is region dependent. Data supports that in the U.S and Europe popularity and sales are wavering. In these regions, industry is facing slumping ad sales, the loss of much classified advertising, and precipitous drops in circulation. The i is a British national newspaper published in London by Daily Mail and General Trust and distributed across the United Kingdom. It is aimed at "readers and lapsed readers" of all ages and commuters with limited time, and was originally launched in 2010 as a sister paper to The Independent. It was later acquired by Johnston Press in 2016 after The Independent shifted to a digital-only model. The i came under the control of JPIMedia a day after Johnston Press filed for administration on 16 November 2018. The paper and its website were bought by the Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT) on 29 November 2019, for £49.6 million. On 6 December 2019 the Competition and Markets Authority served an initial enforcement order on DMGT and DMG Media Limited, requiring the paper to be run separately pending investigation.

The Cooks Source infringement controversy is an Internet phenomenon which occurred in November 2010, when Cooks Source, a free, advertising-supported publication distributed in the New England region of the United States, became the center of a copyright infringement dispute after the magazine reprinted an online article without permission of the author. The controversy was fueled by social media and crowdsourced investigations finding additional alleged infringement and plagiarism. The incident became an international topic of news and analysis, which expanded to become an internet meme. On the issue of copyright, the incident illustrates that "masses of Internet users are very good at finding examples of copyright infringement, which counterbalances how easy the Internet has made plagiarism in the first place." At the same time, the response by the Cooks Source editor "may well become a digital textbook example of how not to respond to grievances in the internet age." The incident was named Journalistic Error of the Year for 2010 by Craig Silverman on his website Regret the Error. The fallout from the controversy drove Cooks Source out of business within two weeks of it breaking in full.

MNG Enterprises, Inc., doing business as Digital First Media and MediaNews Group, is a Denver, Colorado, United States-based newspaper publisher owned by Alden Global Capital. As of May 2021, it owns over 100 newspapers and 200 assorted other publications.

Video game journalism is a branch of journalism concerned with the reporting and discussion of video games, typically based on a core "reveal–preview–review" cycle. With the prevalence and rise of independent media online, online publications and blogs have grown.
