The Austin American-Statesman thought that "the old LeVert who attracted so many romance-starved women has now been replaced by three men who are trying a little too hard to keep up with the new R&B artists." [13] The Miami Herald wrote that, "while the trio smoothly harmonizes when the tempo calls for it, the music is too slick, too processed and lacks distinction." [14] The Akron Beacon Journal opined that "the entire album is worth a listen, but quickly skip to the lush, practically perfect 'Like Water' ... the beautiful song uses violins, violas, a harp, an English horn, a flute, and other instruments not usually found on Levert's productions." [15]
AllMusic wrote that "although the album has some clear contemporary hip-hop influences, it works because LeVert hasn't lost sight of their primary strengths as a soulful vocal group." [9]

LeVert was an American R&B vocal group from Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Formed in 1983, LeVert was composed of Sean and Gerald Levert and Marc Gordon.
Gerald Edward Levert was an American singer-songwriter and producer. Levert was best known for singing with his brother, Sean Levert, and friend Marc Gordon of the R&B vocal group, LeVert. Levert was also a member of LSG, a supergroup comprising Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, and himself. Levert was the son of Eddie Levert, lead singer of the R&B/soul vocal group the O'Jays. He released nine solo albums, six as a member of LeVert, two with his father Eddie Levert, and two as a member of LSG. Levert was also credited with the discovery of R&B groups the Rude Boys, Men at Large, and 1 of the Girls. Levert was also part of the R&B group Black Men United.
Edward Willis Levert is an American singer, best known as the lead vocalist of The O'Jays. He is the father of Gerald Levert (1966–2006) and Sean Levert (1968–2008).

It spawned four singles: the title track, "School Me," "Can U Handle It" and "Baby Hold On to Me," the last of which is a duet with his father, Eddie Levert.

It has become a standard number for New Orleans brass bands following its popularization by the Rebirth Brass Band.
