Tim Griffin is an American writer, curator and former editor. He served as the director and chief curator of the Kitchen. [1] He was editor-in-chief of Artforum from 2003 to 2010. [2] [3]
Griffin received his B.A. from Columbia University, summa cum laude, in 1992. [4] At Columbia, he was a student of French philosopher and critic Sylvère Lotringer. [5] He then received his MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts of Bard College in 1999. [6] He worked as a musician, playing trumpet in several ensembles, a theater producer and an art curator before entering journalism as the art editor at Time Out New York . [7] [8]
From 2003 to 2010, Griffin was editor in chief of Artforum and was credited for transforming the magazine's art criticism into social, political and intellectual movements. He was editor at large of the magazine until joining experimental art center the Kitchen as director and chief curator in 2011. [9] [10] As director, Griffin oversaw projects by artists including Chantal Akerman, Charles Atlas, and Gretchen Bender. He also developed new initiatives and programs including the L.A.B., an interdisciplinary discussion series. [7] He stepped from the directorship down in 2021. [11]
Griffin is married to Johanna Burton, director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. [1] [12] [13]
He was named a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2015. [5]
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) is a contemporary art museum with two locations in greater Los Angeles, California. The main branch is located on Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, near the Walt Disney Concert Hall. MOCA's original space, initially intended as a temporary exhibit space while the main facility was built, is now known as the Geffen Contemporary, in the Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles. Between 2000 and 2019, it operated a satellite facility at the Pacific Design Center facility in West Hollywood.
The Kitchen is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary avant-garde performance and experimental art institution located at 512 West 19th Street, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. As the organization undergoes a multi-year renovation it is currently sited at a satellite loft space in the West Village located at 163B Bank Street, where exhibitions and performances are regularly held. It was founded in Greenwich Village in 1971 by Steina and Woody Vasulka, who were frustrated at the lack of an outlet for video art. The space takes its name from the original location, the kitchen of the Mercer Arts Center which was the only available place for the artists to screen their video pieces. Although first intended as a location for the exhibition of video art, The Kitchen soon expanded its mission to include other forms of art and performance. In 1974, The Kitchen relocated to a building at the corner of Wooster and Broome Streets in SoHo, and incorporated as a not-for-profit arts organization. In 1987 it moved to its current location.
Artforum is an international monthly magazine specializing in contemporary art. The magazine is distinguished from other magazines by its unique 10½ × 10½ inch square format, with each cover often devoted to the work of an artist. Notably, the Artforum logo is a bold and condensed iteration of the Akzidenz-Grotesk font, a feat for an American publication to have considering how challenging it was to obtain fonts favored by the Swiss school via local European foundries in the 1960s. Artforum is published by Artforum Media, LLC, a subsidiary of Penske Media Corporation.

Native Art Department International (NADI) is a Toronto-based collaborative project of wife-and-husband pair of artists Maria Hupfield (b. 1975) and Jason Lujan (b. 1971). Together they curate group exhibitions in which they sometimes show and for which they often make work together. They see this as a way to counter the pigeonholing of contemporary art by Native Americans and people of First Nations descent. Artforum critic Gabrielle Moser has also written about the duo's "commitment to artistic camaraderie, decolonial politics, and non-competition."

Legacy Russell is an American curator, writer, and author of Glitch Feminism: A Manifesto, published by Verso Books in 2020. In 2021, the performance and experimental art institution The Kitchen announced Russell as the organization's next executive director and chief curator. From 2018 to 2021, she was the associate curator of exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
Emmanuel Olunkwa is an artist, writer, designer, editor, and filmmaker. Olunkwa currently serves as the editor of Pin-Up Magazine.
