Timmy T. Davis is an American diplomat and former Marine who is the United States ambassador to Qatar.
A native of Virginia, Davis attended the University of Alabama and the University of Southern Mississippi. He considers New Orleans his hometown. He served in the United States Marine Corps for nearly a decade, including operations in the Horn of Africa and Iraq, before joining the Foreign Service. [1] Davis speaks Spanish and Arabic.
Davis' father and mother are from Mississippi. His father is a retired U.S. Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant. Davis' younger sister, brother-in-law, and two of his uncles are all U.S. Marines. His older sister is a research nurse. He graduated from Lejeune High School at Camp Lejeune, N.C., though he grew up on a number of Marine Corps bases on the eastern seaboard.
Davis, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Counselor, has had an extensive career as a diplomat and official with the State Department. He most recently served as the Executive Assistant to the Secretary of State. Prior to that, Davis served as the U.S. Consul General for Basrah and Southern Iraq, where he led the eventual suspension of operations. [2] His domestic assignments include senior watch officer in the State Department Operations Center, Special Assistant to the secretary of state, Director for Iraq at the National Security Council, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Special Presidential Envoy to the Global Coalition to Counter the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, Senior Advisor to the counselor of the United States Department of State, Chief of Staff to the undersecretary for political affairs, and acting Chief of Staff of the State Department. Davis is a Political Officer. His overseas tours include Guatemala City, Guatemala; Najaf, Iraq; Canberra, Australia; and Bogotá, Colombia. On March 18, 2022, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Davis to be the next United States Ambassador to Qatar. On March 30, 2022, his nomination was sent to the Senate. [4] Hearings on his nomination were held before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on June 16, 2022. The committee favorably reported his nomination to the Senate floor on June 23, 2022. His nomination was confirmed by the full Senate via voice vote on August 4, 2022. [5] He presented his credentials to Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on September 13, 2022. [6]
Davis has received a number of awards including the Distinguished Honor Award and multiple Superior and Meritorious Honor awards. He is also the recipient of the State Department's Ryan C. Crocker Award for Outstanding Leadership in Expeditionary Diplomacy, and the American Foreign Service Association’s William R. Rivkin Award for Constructive Dissent. [1] [7]
The political system of Qatar runs under an authoritarian semi-constitutional monarchy with the emir as head of state and chief executive, and the prime minister as the head of government. Under the Constitution of Qatar, the partially elected Consultative Assembly has limited scope for rejecting legislation or dismissing ministers. The second general election was held in 2021. Political parties are banned and all candidates must run as independents.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Hamad bin Abdullah bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani is a member of the ruling Al Thani Qatari royal family. He was the ruling Emir of Qatar from 1995 until 2013 when he abdicated the throne, handing power to his fourth son Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani who was born to his second spouse, Moza bint Nassir. The Qatari government refers to him as the Father Emir.
The emir of the State of Qatar is the monarch and head of state of the country. The emir is also the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and guarantor of the Constitution. The emir holds the most powerful position in the country, and has a prominent role in foreign relations.
Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned is one of the three consorts of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of the State of Qatar and mother of the current Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. She is the co-founder and chair of the Qatar Foundation, the largest state-owned NPO in the country.
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani is Emir of Qatar, reigning since 2013.
Qatar and the United States are strategic allies. Qatar has been designated a major non-NATO ally by the United States.
Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber bin Mohammed bin Thani Al Thani, who was also known informally by his initials HBJ, is a Qatari politician. He was the Prime Minister of Qatar from 3 April 2007 to 26 June 2013, and foreign minister from 11 January 1992 to 26 June 2013.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is a member of the House of Thani. He is the brother of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the son of the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, with his second wife Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned.
Qatar and the United Arab Emirates share a naval border and are part of the Arabic-speaking Persian Gulf region. They are both members of the GCC.
Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is a senior member of the House of Thani. He is the fifth son of former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and the third child of the Emir with his second wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned. He is president of the Qatar Olympic Committee.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the ministry responsible for handling Qatar's external relations as well as its diplomatic efforts, including the maintenance of its diplomatic missions across the globe. The current minister is Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
Abdullah bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is the Deputy Emir of the State of Qatar and unofficial heir presumptive to Emir of Qatar.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani is a Qatari diplomat, economist, and politician who has been serving as the Prime Minister of Qatar since 7 March 2023 and Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2016. He has also been serving as Chairman of the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) since 2014, and is a member of Qatar's Supreme Council for Economic Affairs and Investments (SCEAI) since 2014.

China – Qatar relations are the bilateral relations between the People's Republic of China and the State of Qatar. China has an embassy in Doha, while Qatar has an embassy in Beijing. With diplomatic relations first formed in 1988, Qatar is a strategic ally of China, and the two countries maintain a strong relationship.
Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdul Aziz Al Thani is a Qatari politician who has served as Prime Minister of Qatar from 28 January 2020 to 7 March 2023 and Minister of the Interior since 28 January 2020.

Sheikha Jawaher bint Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani is a Qatari royal and the first wife and consort of Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar. A member of the Qatari royal family by birth, she is the daughter of former government minister Sheikh Hamad bin Suhaim Al Thani and a grandniece of Emir Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani. She is a second cousin of her husband. As the first wife of the Emir, she accompanied him on an official state visit to Spain in 2022, where she was presented with the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic by King Felipe, and to the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in 2023.
