Cukelwa Magdeline Chotelo (born 5 March 1962), known as Tiny Chotelo, is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress, she was elected to the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature in 2009. In 2013 she was appointed Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Social Development. She was appointed MEC for Nature Conservation and Environmental Affairs in 2014. Chotelo was demoted from the Executive Council in 2018 and left the legislature in 2019.

Early life and education

Chotelo was born into a Tswana family on 5 March 1962 in Gatlhose in South Africa's former Cape Province. She attended Batlharo Tlhaping High School. [1] She received a diploma from Thaba Nchu College of Education. [1] From the University of Port Elizabeth she holds a higher diploma in education. [1]

Career

Chotelo was Deputy Chairperson of Women's Manyano and the Head of Department at the Gamocwaedi Primary School in Deurhaam, Kuruman. [1] In 1996 she became a branch executive member of the ANC's Joe Morolong branch. [1] She became the branch's deputy secretary in 1998. [1] Chotelo was promoted to the treasurer in 2000 and became a member of the executive committee of the Kgalagadi region. [1] In 2004 she became deputy chair of an African National Congress Women's League branch. [1] Chotelo was elected to the provincial executive committee in 2009. [1]

Provincial government

She was elected to the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature in the general election held on 22 April 2009 and took office as a member on 6 May 2009. [2] She was then appointed chairperson of the Agriculture, Roads and Public Works committee. [1] In 2010 she was elected chairperson of chairpersons and chairperson of the Safety and Liaison and Roads and Public Works committee. [1]

Chotelo was selected to be the Member of the Executive Council for Social Development by premier Sylvia Lucas on 5 June 2013. Chotelo succeeded Mxolisa Sokatsha. [3]

After the 2014 general election, Chotelo took office for her second term as a member of the legislature on 21 May 2014. [4] On 30 May, Lucas announced her new Executive Council. She named Chotelo the MEC for Nature Conservation and Environmental Affairs, succeeding Patrick Mabilo. [5] [6] She was demoted from the Executive Council in February 2018. [7]

Chotelo left the provincial legislature in May 2019, as she did not place on the ANC's candidate list for the 2019 general election. [8]

Sylvia Lucas

Sylvia Elizabeth Lucas is the current Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces in the Republic of South Africa, after having taken office on 23 May 2019. From 2013 to 2019, she served as the 4th Premier of the Northern Cape Province. She was elected and inaugurated as the successor to Hazel Jenkins. Lucas briefly served as acting premier and before her appointment, as the MEC for Environmental Affairs in the Northern Cape Provincial Government.

Sisi Ntombela 6th Premier of the Free State

Sefora Hixsonia "Sisi" Ntombela is a South African politician who is the 6th Premier of the Free State and a Member of the Free State Provincial Legislature. She previously served as the Free State MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements. She was also the Free State MEC for Social Development. Ntombela is the Deputy President of the African National Congress Women's League and the treasurer of the Free State ANC.

Sylvia Nomandla Bloem is a South African politician who is the current Northern Cape MEC for Transport and Safety Liaison. She was appointed to the post in June 2020. She has been a member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature since May 2019. From May 2019 to June 2020, she served as the Northern Cape MEC for Land Reform, Agriculture and Nature Conservation and Environmental Affairs. Bloem is a member of the African National Congress.

Maruping Matthews Lekwene is a South African politician serving as the Northern Cape MEC for Health since June 2020. He has been a Member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) since June 2014. He was the Northern Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism from May 2019 until June 2020. McCollen Ntsikelelo Jack, known as Mac Jack, was a South African educator and politician. He served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport, Safety and Liaison from June 2013 until May 2014, when he was appointed the MEC for Health. Following a cabinet reshuffle in March 2016, he was appointed the MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism. Jack held the position until his appointment as MEC for Education in May 2019, despite him briefly being demoted from the Executive Council in May 2017.

Solomon Patrick Mabilo is a South African politician from the Northern Cape serving as the Executive Mayor of the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality since 2018. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), he served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 2014 to 2017. He was a Member of Northern Cape Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2014 and again in 2018. Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba South African politician

Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba is a South African politician. She is the current chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education in the National Assembly of South Africa and a Member of Parliament representing the African National Congress. Prior to serving in parliament, she was a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in the Northern Cape provincial government.

She has served as a member of the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature since 12 June 2020, and previously from 2014 to 2019. Between 2018 and 2019, she was the MEC for Health. Makatong is the treasurer of the provincial African National Congress structure.
