Thomas Michael McAlpin (born 1959 in Miami, Florida) is the president and CEO of Virgin Voyages. [1] [2] He previously served as president and CEO of The World , a privately owned residential ship. [3] McAlpin also served as president of Disney Cruises, where he oversaw two cruise ships, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder as well as Disney's private island Castaway Cay. [4]

Early life and education

McAlpin was born in Miami, Florida in 1959. He earned his bachelor's degree in Accounting and Finance from Florida State University and a master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami. [5]

Career

In 1981, McAlpin began his career as a senior auditor for KPMG and in 1984 became the chief financial officer for the CSB Leasing Group. [6] In 1986, he joined Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. as director of Corporate Planning and Analysis and held this position for eight years. [6] [7]

McAlpin joined Disney Cruises as part of the founding management team in 1995 as vice president of finance, business development and shore-side travel operations. [5] [8] During the creation of Disney Cruises, he was responsible for planning the first two ships and negotiating the contracts for Castaway Cay. McAlpin was with the company for 14 years and served as president for the final five years of his tenure. [9] [10]

In July 2009, McAlpin joined ResidenSea, Ltd., the company responsible for the condo cruise ship, The World, as president and chief executive. [11] During his five years with the company McAlpin oversaw an $11 million renovation of the ship. [12] He resigned from his role at The World and joined Virgin Cruises as president and CEO in 2014. Other activities

McAlpin is a member of the Florida State University Foundation Board of Trustees. [6] He was previously a member of the national board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the chairman in 2012. [7]

The company was incorporated in 1996 as Magical Cruise Company Limited, through the first vessel, Disney Magic and is domiciled in London, England, with their operational headquarters located in Celebration, Florida.

<i>Disney Wonder</i>

Disney Wonder is a cruise ship operated by Disney Cruise Line. She was the second ship to join the Disney fleet on entering service in 1999. Wonder is of the same class as Disney Magic. The interior of Disney Wonder is decorated in the Art Nouveau style, in contrast to her sister ship, Disney Magic which is decorated in the Art Deco style. Both ships have 11 public decks, can accommodate 2,400 passengers in 875 staterooms, and have a crew of approximately 950. Disney Wonder was built in the year following completion of Disney Magic. As of 2015, Disney Wonder sails various North American itineraries on a seasonal basis. From early September to late October 2016, the ship underwent dry dock in Cadiz, Spain where she had many new dining, entertainment, and accommodation enhancements.

Castaway Cay Private island in the Bahamas

Castaway Cay is a private island in the Bahamas which serves as an exclusive port for the Disney Cruise Line ships. It is located near Great Abaco Island and was formerly known as Gorda Cay. In 1997, The Walt Disney Company purchased a 99-year land lease for the cay from the Bahamian government, giving the company substantial control over the island.

The Port of Miami, styled as "PortMiami" but formally the Dante B. Fascell Port of Miami, is a major seaport located in Biscayne Bay at the mouth of the Miami River in Miami, Florida. It is the largest passenger port in the world, and one of the largest cargo ports in the United States. It is connected to Downtown Miami by Port Boulevard—a causeway over the Intracoastal Waterway—and to the neighboring Watson Island via the PortMiami Tunnel. Fathom (cruise line)

Fathom was a cruise travel experience brand owned by Carnival Corporation & plc and a former cruise line. It was registered in the United Kingdom, and based in Doral, Florida. The line was designed to operate in the "social impact travel" market. Fathom later used other ships within the Carnival Corporation to operate it's cruises. runDisney, is the road race division of Disney Sports Enterprises, a unit of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, a segment and subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. The division is designed to get runners to plan a "runcation", a vacation planned to coincide with the race they signed up for.

<i>Scarlet Lady</i> Inaugural cruise ship of Virgin Voyages

Scarlet Lady is a cruise ship operated by Virgin Voyages. She is the inaugural ship for the cruise line and was delivered on 14 February 2020 by Fincantieri of Italy. She is set to debut on May 9 2021. She will operate exclusively as an "adults-only" ship for guests aged 18 and over, sailing mainly four- to five-night Caribbean itineraries from Miami, Florida.
