Early life and education

Phillips was born in Liverpool in 1952 to parents who came from the Caribbean. He studied Mural Design at art college in Preston, graduating in 1972. In 1978 he moved to near Shrewsbury, Shropshire and has subsequently moved to Italy. [2] [3]

Paintings

Phillips' style is figurative and explores history, the built environment and peoples' ways of life. [2] He has used a number of media including oils, pastels and etchings.

His work is held by UK galleries including the University of Liverpool, Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Shire Hall Gallery as well as the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Art Council. [4] [ better source needed ] He has also exhibited internationally. [5]

History of the Benin Bronzes (mid 1980s) are among his best known works. They are a series of nine pastel drawings inspired by the British Punitive Expedition to Benin in 1897. [6] The drawings place the bronzes within their social and cultural context. They illustrate twelve events in the capture of the bronzes and their subsequent removal to western museums (such as the British Museum) and show the tension between views of a culture and its artefacts. Liverpool (1995) is an oil painting where the composition is full of history and socioeconomic themes. The central image is of a massive carved stone lion towering over a child to represent the power of the British empire over its subjects. This is surrounded by depictions of houses and buildings of Liverpool in various states of repair indicating both history and future. The lower third of the painting shows a section of the Liverpool docks walls, source of the city's wealth but also of suffering by slaves, dock workers, emigrants and immigrants. [6]

Liverpool – Growth of a City (2003) is one of his series of etchings using a single plate that is re-worked to produce a series of different images, which is printed as an edition at each stage. The later prints show some of the layers from the earlier versions that can be considered faint, ghostly background. This series of prints shows a back alley in Liverpool 8 and how it changes from the 1890s to the 1980s. The city develops in the background as the ally itself becomes increasingly derelict. [6]

Bluecoat Chambers Grade I listed building, now arts centre, in Liverpool, United Kingdom

Built in 1716–17 as a charity school, Bluecoat Chambers in School Lane is the oldest surviving building in central Liverpool, England. Following the Liverpool Blue Coat School's move to another site in 1906, the building was rented from 1907 onwards by the Sandon Studios Society. Based on the presence of this art society and the subsequent formation of the Bluecoat Society of Arts in 1927, the successor organisation laid claim to being the oldest arts centre in Great Britain, now called the Bluecoat.

Sonia Dawn Boyce,, is a British Afro-Caribbean artist, living and working in London. She is a Professor of Black Art and Design at University of the Arts London. Boyce's research interests explore art as a social practice and the critical and contextual debates that arise from this area of study. With an emphasis on collaborative work, Boyce has been working closely with other artists since 1990, often involving improvisation and spontaneous performative actions on the part of her collaborators. Boyce's work involves a variety of media, such as drawing, print, photography, video, and sound. Her art explores "the relationship between sound and memory, the dynamics of space, and incorporating the spectator". To date, Boyce has taught Fine Art studio practice for more than thirty years in several art colleges across the UK.

Tam Joseph

Tam Joseph is a Dominica-born British painter, formerly known as Tom Joseph. Described as "a uniquely talented, multidimensional artist" by art historian Eddie Chambers, "Tam Joseph has contributed a number of memorable paintings that locate themselves at the centre of socio-political commentary, often making work that shocks as it amuses, amuses as it shocks. Typical in this regard are paintings for which Joseph is universally loved and respected, such as 'Spirit of the Carnival' and 'UK School Report'."

Berenice Sydney British artist (1944-1983)

Berenice Sydney (1944–1983), born Berenice Frieze, and professionally known as 'Berenice', was a British artist who produced a substantial body of work from 1964 until her death in 1983. Her oeuvre consists of paintings on canvas and paper, drawings, prints, children's books, costume design, and performance. A memorial exhibition of her work was held at the Royal Academy in 1984 followed by solo shows in Italy, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Switzerland, and Britain. Her work continues to be featured in print and watercolour shows held in Burlington House. Her work is in over 100 private and public collections.

Liverpool and the Black Atlantic was a season of citywide series of exhibitions and events initiated by Tate Liverpool exploring connections between cultures and continents.

Maud Sulter Scottish photographer and writer

Maud Sulter was a Scottish contemporary fine artist, photographer, writer, educator, feminist, cultural historian, and curator of Ghanaian heritage. She first worked as a writer and poet, later turning to the visual arts. Sulter was known for her collaborations with other Black feminist scholars and activists, capturing the lives of Black people in Europe. She was a champion of the forgotten African-American sculptor Edmonia Lewis.

Chila Kumari Burman British artist

Chila Kumari Burman is a British artist. A significant figure in the Black British Art movement of the 1980s, Burman was one of the first British Asian female artists to have a monograph written about her work: Lynda Nead's Chila Kumari Burman: Beyond Two Cultures (1995), and a second monograph by Nead was published in 2012.

Geoffrey Heath Wedgwood, ARCA, RE was a British etcher and engraver, best known for his architectural etchings.

Armet Francis is a Jamaican-born photographer and publisher who has lived in London since the 1950s. He has been documenting and chronicling the lives of people of the African diaspora for more than 40 years and his assignments have included work for The Times Magazine, The Sunday Times Supplement, BBC and Channel 4.

Denzil Forrester is a Grenada-born artist who moved to England as a child in 1967. Previously based in London, where he was a lecturer at Morley College, he moved to Truro, Cornwall in 2016.

Rita Keegan is an American-born artist, lecturer and archivist, based in England since the late 1970s. She is a multi-media artist whose work uses video and digital technologies. Keegan is best known for her involvement with in the UK's Black Arts Movement in the 1980s and her work documenting artists of colour in Britain.

Althea McNish Textile designer

Althea McNishFSCD was a British textile designer of Trinidadian origin who has been called the first British designer of African descent to earn an international reputation. Born in Trinidad, McNish moved to Britain in the 1950s. She was associated with the Caribbean Artists Movement (CAM) in the 1960s, participating in CAM's exhibitions and seminars and helping to promote Caribbean arts to a British public. Her work is represented in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Whitworth Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture and the Cooper-Hewitt, among other places.

Brenda Agard British photographer

Brenda Patricia Agard was a Black-British photographer, artist, poet and storyteller who was most active in the 1980s, when she participated in some of the first art exhibitions organized by Black-British artists in the United Kingdom. Agard's work focused on creating "affirming images centred on the resilience of the Black woman," according to art historian Eddie Chambers.

Edna Lumb British artist

Edna Lumb (1931–1992) was a British artist specialising in industrial technology depicted in oils and prints. She was based in her home town of Leeds, UK but travelled around the UK, Europe and West Africa for inspiration and subjects for her art.
