Trenches is a strategic World War I video game first developed for the iPhone and iPod Touch by American studio Thunder Game Works. The initial version launched on December 24, 2009.

Gameplay

Trenches is a combination of a Castle Attack and Tower Defense set during World War I. The player is put into the role of a Battlefield Commander for the British Expeditionary Forces in Western Europe during 1914 against the German Army, or vice versa, and the player must accomplish a set of missions to complete the game during the campaign. The game spans throughout the war as the game progresses, allowing the play to unlock more classes and artillery. [1]

The player must allocate resources and hire units to combat enemies units advancing from the right side of the screen. Units include the Riflemen, Machinegunner, Sniper, Engineer, Mortar Team, and randomly spawned Officers that add aura-based benefits to allied units. Players also have access to off-screen artillery support that include High Explosive Bombardment and Poisonous Gas.

The game includes a variety of skirmish modes that includes King of the Trench (King of the Hill) and a Zombie Horde mode, with a subsequent updated adding cooperative and competitive multiplayer. [2]

Reception

Trenches released with a wide range of ratings and response and was featured by Apple under "Hot New Games", "Most Addicting Games", "Best Strategy Games", and "Made for iOS4". Trenches earned PocketGamer's Bronze Award. [3]

Kotaku praised the game after it was patched. [4]

Trenches received a 3 out of 4 from Slide to Play with reviews stating that it was "an addictive trench-filled WWI strategy game that shares a few aspects with the war itself." [2]

MTV stated that Trenches was an impressive and tight iPhone experience. [5]

The title received some negative criticisms at its launch due to a simplified gaming experience. TouchArcade stated that the game can be completed by overwhelming the enemy with basic units and contained a very short campaign. [6] Thunder Game Works publicly acknowledge this and released a substantial update to add new skirmish modes, multiplayer, and an extended campaign. [2]

Updates

Thunder Game Works has later announced a standalone spin-off version of its popular Zombie Horde skirmish mode, Stenches, which expanded on the Zombie Horde mode's features and gameplay. [7]

Trenches HD, the iPad version of Trenches, has been released as Trenches: Generals.

Trenches 2 was announced in 2011 and was released on December 15, 2011.

<i>Rock Band</i> (iOS) 2009 video game

Rock Band is a music video game released for the iOS. It was co-developed by EA Montreal and Harmonix, and was published by Electronic Arts and MTV Games. The game was released as a part of the Rock Band series for download through the App Store in several regions on October 19, 2009. On May 2, 2012, RockBandAide announced that EA intended to discontinue Rock Band with servers being disconnected and support being dropped on May 31, 2012. However, EA stated that the message was "sent in error" and the app would remain available to those who purchased the app. It was later announced that due to an expiring contract with Harmonix the game would be removed from the App Store. This occurred on July 31, 2012, and the game is now currently unavailable; though users who have previously downloaded the game can continue to play it.

<i>Archetype</i> (video game) 2010 video game

Archetype is a First-person shooter that was developed by American studio Munkyfun LLC and published by Villain, LLC. It was released for the iPod Touch and the iPhone on July 1, 2010, and later an HD version for the iPad on August 19, 2010. It is set in a futuristic world where aliens have invaded Earth, and revolves around the resulting war.

Survival mode, or horde mode, is a game mode in a video game in which the player must continue playing for as long as possible without dying in an uninterrupted session while the game presents them with increasingly difficult waves of challenges. A variant of the mode requires that the player last for a certain finite amount of time or number of waves, after which victory is achieved and the mode ends. The mode is particularly common among tower defense games, where the player must improve the defenses of a specific location in order to repel enemy forces for as long as possible. Survival mode has been compared to the gameplay of classic arcade games, where players face off against increasingly stronger waves of enemies. This mode was intended to give the game a definite and sometimes sudden ending, so that other players could then play the arcade game as well.

<i>Gasketball</i> 2012 video game

Gasketball is a basketball-themed puzzle video game for the iPad by Mikengreg, an independent development team of Michael Boxleiter and Greg Wohlwend. Players flick basketballs through 2D physics puzzles into the hoop in single-player, local multiplayer, and asynchronous HORSE-style online multiplayer modes. The game is free-to-play with in-app purchases. Development began in mid 2011 following Mikengreg's successful Solipskier. They were able to live from the earnings for Gasketball's two year development at their previous salary, which afforded them the stability to try new avenues and reject prototypes, though they worked 100-hour weeks. Towards the end of their development, they ran out of money and lived on the couches of friends. It was released on August 9, 2012, and the game did not reach their desired conversion rate at the time of launch.
