Tsige Duguma Gemechu (born 23 February 2001) is an Ethiopian track and field athlete who won gold at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships over 800 metres. She is also an Ethiopian national champion over 400 metres. [1]

Career

She was a silver medalist over 200 metres at the 2017 African U20 Championships in Athletics in Algeria. [2]

In March 2022, she won the Ethiopian national indoor championships over 400 metres in Hawassa. [3]

In July 2023, she set a new personal best over 800 metres, breaking the 2-minute barrier for the first time as she record 1:59.40 in Belgium. [4]

In February 2024, she completed a front-running victory over 800 metres in Belgrade in a time of 1:59.66. [5]

She won gold at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow in the women's 800 metres. [6] She had previously won her qualifying heat in a time of 2:00.50, and won her semi-final in a personal best time 1:58.35. [7] [8] She became Ethiopia’s first women’s world indoor champion in the discipline. [9]

In March 2024, she won gold in the 800 metres at the African Games. [10]

She won the bronze medal at the 2009 World Championships, and a silver at the 2010 World Indoor Championships. At the European Athletics Championships, Meadows took silver outdoors in 2010 and gold indoors in 2011. She also had some international success as part of the Great Britain women's 4 x 400 metres relay squad.

Totka Nikolaeva Petrova is a retired female middle distance runner who represented Bulgaria in the 1970s and the early 1980s. She specialized in the 800 and 1500 metres, and won numerous international medals. She is still the Bulgarian 1500 metres record holder.

Guy Learmonth is a Scottish and Great British athlete specialising in the 800 metres. His PB currently stands as 1:44.73 and he is the 3rd fastest Scottish 800m athlete of all time. Learmonth reached the final at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 European Indoor Championships, finishing 6th in both. He was named the GB&NI captain for the European Indoor Championships in 2019. Guy has broken the Scottish 800m Junior Record 9 times and holds the English AAA U20 Indoor & BUCS Championship records.

Shelayna Oskan-Clarke is a British middle-distance runner. Shelayna is currently the British 800m champion. She competed in the 800 metres event at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, Where she finished 5th in the final. In 2016, she won the women's 800m at the Anniversary Games, and also reached the semi-final at the Rio Olympic Games, narrowly missing out on a place in the final. In 2019, Shelayna took the gold medal at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow.

Jake Wightman is a British middle-distance runner who primarily competes in the 1500 metres. He won the gold medal at the 2022 World Championships, the first global gold in a middle distance event for a British male since Seb Coe's 1500 m title at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. At the European Athletics Championships, Wightman earned a bronze in 2018 and a silver for the 800 metres in 2022. He won bronze medals at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The women's 800 metres event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place from 30 July to 3 August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. 46 athletes from 29 nations competed. 19-year-old Athing Mu of the United States won the gold medal. The silver medal went to Keely Hodgkinson of Great Britain, and the bronze medal went to Mu's American teammate Raevyn Rogers.
