UE Red Warriors refer to the collegiate men's varsity teams of the University of the East. The women's collegiate varsity teams are called the UE Lady Warriors. The Athletic director of the University of the East is Rodrigo M. Roque.

Background

The University of the East is one of eight schools participating in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. The UE Red Warriors teams have won UAAP championships in basketball, volleyball, fencing, table tennis and other sports. UE athletes also participate in other intercollegiate tournaments as well as invitational tournaments abroad.

Basketball

As of 2006, The Red Warriors were tied with the University of Santo Tomas as the second most successful team in UAAP men's basketball, with 18 titles, most of them coming from the time of coach Baby Dalupan and Robert Jaworski. [1]

The UE Red Warriors holds the longest senior basketball championship run with seven straight UAAP titles. They also hold the longest finals streak appearances, with sixteen straight from 1957 to 1972. [1] The team has also represented the country at the 1967 Summer Universiade. [2]

UE also participates in the Father Martin Cup and Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) men's (and women's) basketball tournaments. The UE Red Warriors were crowned as champions of the 2006 Philippine Collegiate Champions League. They are also the 2013 FilOil/Flying V-Hanes Preseason Cup champions.

  • Champion - 2013 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup: The Red Warriors won the 2013 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup. [3]
  • 10th Fr. Martin Division Cup: The team won the 10th Father Martin Division 2 Cup at the Trinity University of Asia in Quezon City.

UAAP seasons highlights

  • UAAP Season 69: The team ended UAAP Season 69 (2006–07) in third place after failing to win their knockout match against University of Santo Tomas on September 21, 2006. They lost to the UST Growling Tigers by one point, 81–82.
  • UAAP Season 70: The team ended it Finals-appearance drought in Season 70 (2007–08), finishing 14–0 sweep in elimination rounds and winning their games by at at least 16 points. [1] The team, however, lost the best-of-three Finals series to the De La Salle Green Archers 2–0.
  • UAAP Season 72: On January 12, 2009, Lawrence Chongson replaced Dindo Pumaren as the team's head coach. the team participated in five tournaments, two of which were held abroad: the 2009 Ming Dao International Basketball Tournament held in March in Taipei, Taiwan; the Easter Showcase in Las Vegas, USA in April; the 2009 FilOil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Invitational Cup held at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan; the PBL Flex Unity Cup (with the players comprising the "Cobra Energy Drink Warriors"). [4] In the semi-finals of Season 72, The team defeated the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws to earn a slot in the finals, but lost to the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the Finals in three games.

The UE Red Warriors participated as the Philippines' representative for men's basketball at the 1967 Summer Universiade in Tokyo, Japan. [6]

Eleven UE athletes were medalists in their respective sports at the recently concluded Southeast Asian Games. These 11 UE athletes were part of the 620 athletes comprising Team Philippines that competed at the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon, Ratchasima, Thailand on December 6–15, 2007. [7]

Ronald Jacobs was an American basketball coach. Jacobs was head coach of the men's basketball team of Loyola Marymount University. After turning the program around in just one season, he was invited by Philippine businessman Eduardo Cojuangco, Jr. to coach the Philippines men's national basketball team. Jacobs brought the Philippines back to prominence in basketball during the 1980s. He revolutionized the way basketball was played in the Philippines. He raised the level of technology in playing the game and turned every contest into a learning experience by showing how to win with science, hard work, team play and discipline.

Virgilio "Baby" Adam Dalupan was a Filipino basketball coach and player. Dubbed "The Maestro", Dalupan was best known for his lengthy coaching tenure with the Crispa Redmanizers and garnered a career total of 52 basketball championships.

Frederick "Derrick" S. Pumaren, better known on his nickname Manong Derrick, is a Filipino basketball coach who was recently the coach of the De La Salle Green Archers in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). He coached several teams in the UAAP, PBA, and PBL.

The 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championship is the inaugural tournament of the Philippine Collegiate Championship (PCC) for basketball in its current incarnation, and the sixth edition overall. The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup is the seventh preseason high school and collegiate basketball tournament organized by Filoil Flying V Sports. The opening ceremonies was held on April 14, 2012 with the first tripleheader of basketball games at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan. All eight teams from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and ten from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines) (NCAA) participate in the tournament. Their junior counterparts also join the tournament, except for UE Junior Warriors.

Kiefer Isaac Crisologo Ravena is a Filipino professional basketball player for Shiga Lakes of the B2 League. Ravena played for the Ateneo Blue Eagles of the UAAP during his college days. He plays the point guard position.

Marco Januz "Juno" Sauler is a basketball coach and former basketball player from the Philippines. He was a former head coach of the De La Salle University Green Archers, a collegiate team in the UAAP. Sauler is currently part of coaching staff of the Magnolia Hotshots in the Philippine Basketball Association.

The Philippines has participated at the Universiade debuting at the 1967 Summer Universiade. The 1957 UAAP men's basketball tournament was the 20th year of the men's tournament of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)'s basketball championship. Hosted by University of the Philippines, the UE Warriors defeated the UST Glowing Goldies in a single game finals taking their first UAAP men's basketball championship since joining the league in 1952.

Kathleen Faith Pepito Arado is a Filipino volleyball athlete who plays as a libero for Premier Volleyball League club PLDT High Speed Hitters. She was a member of the UE Lady Warriors in the UAAP. She was named the UAAP Season 77 Rookie of the Year alongside Ennajie Laure. She also bagged the Best Libero award in the 2016 South East Asian Junior Women's Volleyball Championships in Sisaket, Thailand.

Mary Anne "Mean" Mendrez is a Filipino volleyball player, currently the outside hitter and middle blocker for the Choco Mucho Flying Titans. From 2016 to 2021, she was the outside spiker for the UE Lady Warriors volleyball team of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, where in 2018 she was awarded as the PSL Collegiate Grand Slam Second Best Outside Spiker.

Ferdinand "Dindo" Pumaren, is a retired Filipino professional basketball player and former collegiate coach. In his professional playing career, he was nicknamed "The Bullet" due to his great passing and stealing.

The UE Red Warriors are the collegiate men's basketball team of the University of the East, which play in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the premiere sports league in the country.
