The National is a team handball tournament to determine the Men's and Women's National Champion from the United States. At the men's side there exist an Elite and Open Division. In years with many teams, the Open Division is split in Division I and II.

History

The record champion at the Men's side is the New York Athletic Club with a total of 20 titles. Since the Men's Elite Division was established, New York City THC holds the most titles (7), followed by New York Athletic Club (6). The current US men reigning champion is San Francisco CalHeat. At the women's side, Chicago Inter HC holds 6 titles. The current US women reigning champion is New York City THC. [1]

Men's

Until 2000 the Open Division was the tournament to select the national champion. After the Elite Division was established. The overall record champion is the New York Athletic Club with 20 titles. [2]

Men's Elite Division

Record champion is New York City THC with 7 titles each.

Men's Open Division I

Record champion is the New York Athletic Club with, at minimum, 8 titles; the club has also the most repeat titles—3 titles.

Men's Open Division II

Record champions are the Air Force Falcons and West Point each with 2 titles.

Women's Open Division

Record champion is the Chicago Inter HC with 6 titles the club has also the most continues titles with three.

Sports are an important part of culture in the United States. Historically, the national sport has been baseball. The Eastern Illinois Panthers are the intercollegiate athletic programs of Eastern Illinois University (EIU) located in Charleston, Illinois, United States. The Panthers athletic program is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) and competes at the NCAA Division I level in the Football Championship Subdivision. EIU's colors are blue and gray. Selected as the team mascot in 1930, EIU's panther was informally known as "Billy" for many years and was officially named "Billy the Panther" in 2008. Lars Stefan Lövgren is a Swedish former handball player. He was born in Gothenburg. Making his debut in the national team in 1993, he played a total of 268 games and scored 1138 goals. During his adult career he played for Redbergslids IK, and German sides TV Niederwürzbach and Champions League- and Bundesliga-winning team THW Kiel. He was the captain of the national team during the period 1996–2006 and for THW Kiel 2001–2009. He is a five-time Swedish league champion with Redbergslid, and a seven-time Bundesliga champion with THW. He won the German cup four times, and he helped lead Kiel to the European Champions League title in 2007.

Handball in the United States is a minor sport. The U.S. is represented in international competitions, such as the Summer Olympics and the Pan American Games, by the United States men's national handball team and the United States women's national handball team. The U.S. men's and women's teams have struggled in international competitions against nations where handball is more popular.

The first tier of intercollegiate sports in the United States includes sports that are sanctioned by one of the collegiate sport governing bodies. The major sanctioning organization is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Before mid-1981, women's top-tier intercollegiate sports were solely governed by the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). Smaller colleges are governed by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Two-year colleges are governed by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in most of the country, except for the unaffiliated California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC).

The Men's Elite Division is a team handball tournament to determine the National Champion from the US. Only qualified teams are allowed to play in this Division. The other teams who fail to qualify play in the Open Division. Automatic bids are given to the winners of the Northeast Team Handball League, and the Midwest Team Handball and, in the past, were also given to the Great Lakes Team Handball Association, and Western Team Handball League. In the current format, the Elite Division comprises 8 teams. Before the Elite Division existed the National Champion was claimed at the Open Division.

The Men's Open National is a team handball tournament to determine the Open National Champion from the US. This is the second highest level of competition in the United States. Not qualified teams for the Men's Elite Division are allowed to play in this Division. Before the Men's Elite Division was established, the National Champion was crowned at the Open Division.
