Ultimate Live Lounge was a competition run by Radio 1 in 2009 to find the best Live Lounge performance to date. [1] Over the previous 10 years there had been more than 500 Live Lounge sessions with hundreds of artists performing their single and an exclusive cover on air. After a series of heats, three semi-finals, and a weekend-long Grand Final, BBC Radio 1 listeners chose their Ultimate Live Lounge Cover, "Stronger" by Thirty Seconds to Mars.

The Jo Whiley Show was a British weekday later weekend radio show on BBC Radio 1 hosted by Jo Whiley. The Live Lounge is a segment on the British radio stations BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 1Xtra. Originally hosted by Jo Whiley on her weekday mid-morning later weekend lunchtime radio show and then by Fearne Cotton from 2009 until 2015, it has been hosted by Clara Amfo since May 2015. It exhibits well-known artists usually performing one song of their own and one by another artist, in an acoustic format. The Live Lounge itself is also a physical room in the Radio 1 studios, from where some of the performances are broadcast; however, due to its size, many are done from the BBC Maida Vale Studios. From 2009, Trevor Nelson began hosting Live Lounges on his BBC Radio 1Xtra show, and was replaced in that slot by DJ Ace in 2017.

Live Lounge of 2010 was a competition to find the best Live Lounge cover of 2010. After the success of the Ultimate Live Lounge, BBC Radio 1 ran the competition for a second year but only live lounges of the previous year could enter. The competition had a similar format with listeners voting for their favourite performance to win. The first 2 rounds had 3 entries pitted against each other, whereas the Semi-Final was between 2 entries rather than 3 like the previous year.

On 27 January 2011 BBC Radio 1 launched a new extended version of the popular Live Lounge dubbed 'Live Lounge Special with...' or sometimes referred to as 'Live Lounge XL'. The extended live lounge performance differs from the normal performance with an interview at the very beginning of the set rather than at the beginning of each track. Then the artist performs 5 or 6 tracks uninterrupted, which can include a cover.
