Uma Tuli is an Indian social worker, educationist and the founder of Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust, [1] a Delhi-based non-governmental organisation, working for the rehabilitation of physically disabled people. [2] [3] [4] [5] She was honoured by the Government of India, in 2012, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri. [6]
Uma Tuli was born on 3 March 1943 in New Delhi into a Punjabi Hindu Khatri family of the Tuli clan. [2] [3] [4] She secured a master's degree from Jiwaji University, Gwalior and followed it with another master's degree in Special Education (MEd) from the University of Manchester. [2] [7] Later, she obtained a doctoral degree from the University of Delhi in English Literature. [2] [3] [4] [7] She has had a career teaching at various colleges in Delhi and Gwalior for over thirty years. [3] [4]
Tuli founded Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust, [2] [5] [7] [8] with the savings she accumulated from her salary as a teacher, in 1981. [9] The institution over the years has grown in stature to become a single window provider of inclusive education, healthcare, vocational training, employment, sports and cultural facilities for physically disabled people. [2] [3] [4] [5] The institution has networked with Delhi University [2] for courses in Physiotherapy, with Roehampton University [2] [5] for teachers' training in special education and also with Manipal University (MAHE), Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University and Indira Gandhi National Open University. Tuli is the first non-bureaucrat to be appointed as the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disability, [10] a position she held from 2001 until 2005. [2] [7] During her tenure, she initiated efforts to set up mobile courts, hassle-free distribution of disability certificates for concessional travel in bus and train, and ridding public places of barriers so that persons with disability have easy access. [3] [4] She led the Home Guards contingent in the 1978 Republic Day Parade, the first lady commander to do so. [3] [4] Her efforts are reported behind the participation of Amar Jyoti students at the 1995 Republic Day Parade, reported to be a first for physically disabled children. [7] She is also reported to have contributed to the conduct of five National Integrated Sports Meets, where children with disabilities competed with normal children. [2] [8] She was the leader of the Indian contingent of the Indian contingent for the 5th Abilympics held at Prague, Czech Republic, in 2000 [7] and led the team that organised the 6th Abilympics held in New Delhi in 2003 [3] [4] under the aegis of Amar Jyoti. [9] Tuli has also published many articles and books such as The Spirit Triumphs and Better Care of Children with Locomotor Disability [7] [11] and has presented papers at several national and international seminars and conferences. Tuli is the Managing Secretary of Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust since its inception in 1981. [3] [4] [12] She served as the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities for Government of India for a period of five years from 2001, [9] has held the chair of the Education Commission of the Rehabilitation International, USA [3] [4] and is its National Secretary [7] She has been a member of the National Human Rights Commission and has served the advisory board of Voice and Vision, a Mumbai-based resource and training centre for children with multiple disabilities. [7] She is the Secretary General of the National Abilympic Association of India [3] [4] and is an executive member of the International Abilympic Federation. [3] [4] [7] She is also the patron of Society for Empowerment and Trade Upliftment of Artisans (SETU), a non-governmental organisation working for the development of the weaker sections of the society. Roehampton University, London has conferred the degree of Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa) on Uma Tuli for her services to inclusive education. [3] [4] Amar Jyoti, under Tuli's leadership, received two national awards, one as the best institution in 1991 and the other, for creating barrier-free premises. [2] [3] [4] [7] She has received the Nehru Smriti Award and President's Gold Medal (1981), Hong Kong Foundation award (1987), UN-ESCAP award (1998) Jhunjhunwala award (1998), Manv Seva award (1998) and Helen Keller award (1999). A recipient of the Women Achiever's award from the Consortium of Women Achievers, Tuli has also been honoured by the Berkeley city, Michigan, USA with a special recognition citation. [7] [11] She received the Lakshmipat Singhania – IIM National Leadership Award in 2010 [3] [4] [7] and, two years later, she was included by the Government of India in the Republic Day honours list for the civilian award of Padma Shri. In August 2018 Power Brands awarded Dr. Uma Tuli the Bharatiya Manavata Vikas Puraskar for being a pioneer of inclusive education, a social activist and rights leader who has been fighting for disability rights over the last four decades and for her relentless hard work and lifelong commitment to her mission of an India which places its citizens with disability on the same platform as a non-disabled citizen. Uma Sharma is a kathak dancer, choreographer and teacher. She is also runs the Bharatiya Sangeet Sadan, Delhi, a classical dance and music academy, situated in New Delhi, founded by her father in 1946. She is most known for reviving the old classical dance form of Natwari Nritya or the Raslila of Brindavan, which later evolved into the Kathak.
Jyotindra Manshankar Bhatt, better known as Jyoti Bhatt, is an Indian artist best known for his modernist work in painting and printmaking and also his photographic documentation of rural Indian culture. He studied painting under N. S. Bendre and K.G. Subramanyan at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University (M.S.U.), Baroda. Later he studied fresco and mural painting at Banasthali Vidyapith in Rajasthan, and in the early 1960s went on to study at the Academia di Belle Arti in Naples, Italy, as well the Pratt Institute in New York. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2019 and elected as a Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 2022.

Mary Puthisseril Verghese (1925–1986) was a physician in India who was among the earliest pioneers of Physical medicine and rehabilitation in the country. Mary Verghese was instilled in a home where love and respect were two main factors in their close knit family. She was caring of others and wanted to give back to her community in any way that she could. In 1963, she took charge of what was the first department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with an inpatient facility in India at the Christian Medical College, Vellore. She was instrumental in expanding the services of the department with the establishment of the first inpatient rehabilitation institute of the country in 1966. In recognition of her contributions to the field of medicine, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1972.
Shanno Khurana is a noted Indian classical vocalist and composer, from the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana of Hindustani classical music. A disciple of the doyen of the gharana, Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan, she is known for performing rare bandish and raag, though her singing style includes genres like khayal, tarana, thumri, dadra, tappa, to chaiti and bhajan. Born and brought up in Jodhpur, she started singing on All India Radio in 1945 in Lahore, later shifted to Delhi, where she continued her singing on All India Radio, Delhi and in concerts and music festivals. She also pursued music education, finally earning her M.Phil. and PhD in music from the Kairagarh University, and has undertakes extensive research on folk music of Rajasthan.
Acharya Chandana, known as Tai Maharaj by her devotees, is an Indian Jain nun of the Amarmuni Sampradaya. Chandana is the first Jain sadhvi to be awarded the title of Acharya and the Padma Shri. Chandana is known for her social engagement and for popularising the notion of 'seva' among the Jain community. She is the founder of Veerayatan, a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Rajgir with centers in over ten countries.
Gyan Prakash Chopra (1920-2011) was an Indian educationist, credited with the establishment of several educational institutions in India. A recipient of the Padma Shri in 1999, he was honored again by the Government of India, in 2010, with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, for his services to the field of education.

Kanubhai Hasmukhbhai Tailor is an Indian social worker who is physically disabled. He is from Gujarat and the founder of the non governmental organization, Disable Welfare Trust of India, working towards the upliftment of physically disabled people. The Government of India honored Tailor in 2011, with the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri.
Devi Dutt Sharma is an Indian scholar and writer of Dogri literature, best known for his writings on Himalayan dialects, culture and ethnic history. The Government of India honored Sharma in 2011, with the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri.
Joy Michael (1927-2018) was an Indian theatre personality and the co-founder of Yatrik, a repertory company based in Delhi. The Government of India honored her in 2012, with the fourth highest civilian award of Padma Shri.
Prabhakar Vaidya is an Indian physical educationist, academic and the honorary secretary of Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal, a century-old organization and a national institution working towards modernizing the traditional systems of Sports & Games. He was honored by the Government of India, in 2012, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Subhasini Mistry is an Indian social worker. She became a widow at the age of 23 and was left with four children. She struggled in life working as a house maid, selling vegetables and worked as a manual labourer. She went on to build a charitable hospital called "Humanity Hospital" for the poor. In 2018, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in recognition of her social work. She was also one of the 12 recipients of the Women Transforming India Awards in 2017.
Avadh Kishore Jadia is a poet and author in the Bundeli language and the Braj language from the Chhatarpur district in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh. He was also an Ayurveda medical practitioner in the Madhya Pradesh Govt Service. In the year 2022, Govt of India honored him by conferring the Padma Shri award for his contributions as an author in the Bundeli and Braj languages.
