United General Workers Union

United General Workers Union is a central trade union organization in Belize.

The union was founded in 1979, through the merger of the Belize General Development Workers' Union and the Southern Christian Union. As of 1980, it claimed about 6,000 members. During the 1980s UGWU was seen as the most left-wing trade union organisation in the country. [1]

The current President is Rutilio Witzil. Previous Presidents include Ivan Acosta, Mark Butler, Raymond Sheppard, Jose Torres, Marvin Mora, Sean Nicholas amongst many other since 1981. The Belize Energy Workers Union (BEWU) was founded in October 1981. The BEWU is a breakaway Union from the United General Workers' Union (UGWU) as a consequence of unfair representation felt by the members. The workers were part of the membership of UGWU for a fair period of time previous to the Belize Energy Workers Union. However, in latter years, the members felt that its interest was not served justly as the Union had other priorities.
