The Unity Party is a political party in Sierra Leone. It was founded on 25 October 2017 by Femi Claudius Cole. [1]

It is the first political party founded by a woman in the history of Sierra Leone. [1]

History

The party has offices in Bo, Kenema, and Makeni.

In partnership with the West End Clinic, she established the Unity Movement Sierra Leone a voter outreach initiative through mobile medical outreach programs to treat malaria, hypertension, diabetes, and other illnesses. [2] The initiative included town meetings in marginalized communities. [2]

Ideology

The aim of the Unity Party is to bring Sierra Leoneans of all ethnic groups together in a common effort to improve the country. [2] The party's main focus is education, health, job creation and increased international trade. [2] [3]

  2. A strategic outline for achieving growth and development.
  3. Transparency, accountability, and integrity.
  4. A smaller, focused, and more efficient government.
  5. Commitment to minimize and as much as possible, to eliminate corruption.
  6. Basic education, free and accessible to all.
  7. A healthcare system designed to address the needs and challenges of life in Sierra Leone.
  8. Investment and promotion of agriculture to achieve self-sufficiency in food production.

Recent electoral history

The Unity Party participated in the 2018 General Election. So far the Unity Party does not hold any electoral seats.

In presidential elections

Cole began her presidential campaign before the party was officially registered in October 2017. [4]

Cole stood as a candidate in the Sierra Leonean general election, 2018. [5] [3] She was the only female presidential candidate in the election and the first woman in history to run for the office of President of Sierra Leone.

Cole received the endorsements of Isata Jabbie Kabbah, the former First Lady of Sierra Leone and Dr.Nemata Majeks Walker, founder of the 50/50 Sierra Leone Group. [6]

The Unity Party won 0.2% of the vote in the 2018 General Election. [7]

As the candidate of the main opposition Sierra Leone People's Party, Bio defeated Samura Kamara of the ruling All People's Congress in the runoff vote of the 2018 Sierra Leone presidential election with 51.8% of the votes to Kamara"s 48.2%. International and local observers declared the election free, fair and credible. Bio succeeded Ernest Bai Koroma as president. As the main opposition leader, Bio was a critic of his predecessor president Ernest Bai Koroma and his administration. As president, Bio has overturned most of the policies of Ernest Bai Koroma, whom he accuses of corruption.

The Annie Walsh Memorial School is an all-girls secondary school in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It was established in 1849 originally in Charlotte, a newly established village for recaptives. It is claimed to be the oldest girls school in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over the years, the school has consistently outperformed its peers in terms of academic achievement, making it the most prestigious secondary school for girls in Sierra Leone. The school's Principal is currently Mrs OPhelia Morrison.

Charles Francis Kondo Margai is a Sierra Leonean politician and constitutional lawyer who served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice of Sierra Leone in 2018.

Dr. John Albert Musselman Karefa-Smart was a Sierra Leonean politician, medical doctor and university professor. He served as the first Foreign Minister under Sierra Leone's first Prime Minister, Milton Margai. He was an ordained Elder of the United Methodist Church.

Ernest Bai Koroma is a Sierra Leonean politician who served as the fourth President of Sierra Leone from 17 September 2007 to 4 April 2018.

Mohamed Yahya Sillah is a Sierra Leonean politician, journalist and human rights activist. He was active in the transition efforts from military to civilian rule in Sierra Leone. As the National Chairman of the National Alliance Democratic Party (NADP), he was an unsuccessful candidate in the 1996 Presidential elections.

Patricia Kabbah was a Sierra Leonean lawyer who served as First Lady of Sierra Leone from 1996-1998. She was the first wife of Sierra Leone's third President, Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. She is widely regarded as one of the most influential First Ladies in the history of Sierra Leone.

Women in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone, officially the Republic of Sierra Leone, is a Constitutional Republic in West Africa. Since it was founded in 1787, the women in Sierra Leone have been a major influence in the political and economic development of the nation.

2018 Sierra Leonean general election

General elections were held in Sierra Leone on 7 March 2018 to elect the President, Parliament and local councils. Incumbent President Ernest Bai Koroma did not run for another term, as he was constitutionally ineligible, having served the maximum ten years in office.

Nemata Majeks-Walker is a Sierra Leonean women's rights activist.

Femi Claudius Cole is a Sierra Leonean politician. In 2016 she founded the Unity Party, making her the first Sierra Leonean woman to form a political party. In 2018, she was the first woman to run for the office of President of Sierra Leone. She is the only woman party leader in Sierra Leone.

Isata Dora Bangura is a Sierra Leonean educator and politician. She was the running mate of presidential candidate Charles Margai in Sierra Leone's 2018 General Election. She is the second woman to run for the office of vice-president in Sierra Leonean history.

First Lady of Sierra Leone

The title First Lady of Sierra Leone is held by the female spouse of the president of Sierra Leone. The first lady is a representative of the people of Sierra Leone at home and abroad. The Office of the First Lady is an extension of State House and is responsible for social events and ceremonies at State Lodge.


Isata Jabbie Kabbah is a Sierra Leonean politician. She is president of the All Political Parties Women Association, APPWA. She is the widow of the 3rd President of Sierra Leone Ahmed Tejan Kabbah.
