Products include tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags. There are 486 employees working in the head office in Germany. [3] The corporate group also owns production facilities in Bỉm Sơn, Vietnam. [4]

In 2006, Edelrid became a part of the Vaude Group. [5] The brands Lucky (climbing supplies) and Markill (camping stoves) were integrated in the Edelrid brand in 2008. Markill was originally a brand of the company Marsteller & Killman founded in Thuringia in 1866 and established in Kettwig in 1907. Marsteller & Killman produced stoves, cooking utensils, food containers, and aluminum bottles. In 2017, the Vaude Group took over Red Chili, a producer mainly of climbing shoes and other climbing garments. Red Chili is now part of Edelrid. [6]

VAUDE is the official outfitter of the climbing association German Alpine Club since 2002. [7]

Corporate social responsibility and environmental protection

In 2014, VAUDE published its first corporate responsibility report established in accordance with the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative. [8] Since 2010, the company is a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, an organisation which is seeking to improve working conditions in the textile industry. [9] To ensure a manufacturing process which is as environmentally friendly and safe as possible, VAUDE applies the bluesign production standard. [10] The company headquarter in Tettnang is climate neutral.

In 2015, VAUDE was one of six companies nominated for the Financial Times' Boldness in Business Award in the category Corporate Responsibility/Environment. [11] At the end of the year, VAUDE has won the first place in the category Germany's Most Sustainable Brand of the German Sustainability Award. [12] VAUDE obtained numerous further awards in the area of environmental protection and sustainability. [13]

Regional activities include the running of the company-owned creche for about 30 children, [14] and the take over of the local public swimming pool, to save it from being closed. [15]

VAUDE recommends and is a reseller of Nikwax detergents and waterproofing products which are environmentally friendly because they are water-based, solvent-free and fluorocarbon-free (without the GHS09: Environmental hazard symbol). [16] [17]

Largely adhering to the Economy for the Common Good, VAUDE publishes an additional balance sheet based on its criteria. [18]

In 2019, VAUDE was among the first batch of companies to obtain the newly created Green Button which is an official certificate bestowed by the German government to indicate high ecological and social standards. [19]

The company is a supporter of the foundation Development and Climate Alliance which helps companies and other organisations in becoming climate neutral. [20] The company has achieved complete climate neutrality at the beginning of 2022. [21]

VAUDE Academy

The VAUDE Academy for sustainable business offers consulting services to companies that want to become more sustainable or develop a sustainble business. During the first two years of its existence, the Academy is being supported by the German Federal Environmental Foundation. [22]

Support for refugee employees

Vaude is one of the founding companies of the association Bleiberecht durch Arbeit (Right of Residence through Work), established in 2018, which promotes the granting of right of residence for refugees with permanent employment contract. Due to the scarcity of skilled labour, Vaude would suffer considerable economic damage had their refugee employees to return to their countries of origin. [23] Numerous companies face the same problems and thus joined the association. [24]

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) or corporate social impact is a form of international private business self-regulation which aims to contribute to societal goals of a philanthropic, activist, or charitable nature by engaging in, with, or supporting professional service volunteering through pro bono programs, community development, administering monetary grants to non-profit organizations for the public benefit, or to conduct ethically oriented business and investment practices. While once it was possible to describe CSR as an internal organizational policy or a corporate ethic strategy similar to what is now known today as Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG); that time has passed as various companies have pledged to go beyond that or have been mandated or incentivized by governments to have a better impact on the surrounding community. In addition national and international standards, laws, and business models have been developed to facilitate and incentivize this phenomenon. Various organizations have used their authority to push it beyond individual or even industry-wide initiatives. In contrast, it has been considered a form of corporate self-regulation for some time, over the last decade or so it has moved considerably from voluntary decisions at the level of individual organizations to mandatory schemes at regional, national, and international levels. Moreover, scholars and firms are using the term "creating shared value", an extension of corporate social responsibility, to explain ways of doing business in a socially responsible way while making profits.

The chief sustainability officer, sometimes known by other titles, is the corporate title of an executive position within a corporation that is in charge of the corporation's "environmental" programs. Several companies have created such environmental manager positions in the 21st century to formalize their commitment to the environment. The rise of the investor ESG movement and stakeholder capitalism, has increased the need for corporations to address sustainability and social issues across their value chain, and address growing needs of external stakeholders. Normally these responsibilities rest with the facility manager, who has provided cost effective resource and environmental control as part of the basic services necessary for the company to function. However, as sustainability initiatives have expanded beyond the facility — so has the importance of the position to what is now a C-level executive role. The position of CSO has not been standardized across industries and individual companies which leads it to take on differing roles depending on the organization. The position has also been challenged as symbolic, in that it does not actually have the effect of increasing sustainable practices.

Sustainability accounting

Sustainability accounting was originated about 20 years ago and is considered a subcategory of financial accounting that focuses on the disclosure of non-financial information about a firm's performance to external stakeholders, such as capital holders, creditors, and other authorities. Sustainability accounting represents the activities that have a direct impact on society, environment, and economic performance of an organisation. Sustainability accounting in managerial accounting contrasts with financial accounting in that managerial accounting is used for internal decision making and the creation of new policies that will have an effect on the organisation's performance at economic, ecological, and social level. Sustainability accounting is often used to generate value creation within an organisation.

Traditionally, market orientation (MO) focuses on microenvironment and the functional management of an organisation. However, contemporary organisations have widened their focus to incorporate more roles, functions and emphasis on the macro environment. Firms have been concerned with short run success and often not taken into account the long-run ecological, social and economic effects from their activities. Despite growth in the MO concept, there is still a need to reconceptualise the concept with a greater emphasis on external factors that influence a firm.
