Protests against the April 2009 Moldovan parliamentary election results began on 6 April 2009 in major cities of Moldova before the final official results were announced. The demonstrators claimed that the elections,which saw the governing Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) win a majority of seats,were fraudulent,and alternatively demanded a recount,a new election,or resignation of the government. Similar demonstrations took place in other major Moldovan cities,including the country's second largest,Bălți,where over 7,000 people protested.

Moldova–Transnistria relations are the political and economic relations between the Republic of Moldova and Transnistria,an unrecognized state between the Dniester River and Ukraine. During the dissolution of the Soviet Union,political tensions in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic led to Transnistria declaring independence from Moldova,culminating in the Transnistrian War of 1992. As part of the ceasefire agreement ending the war,a Joint Control Commission composed of Moldovan,Transnistrian,and Russian forces was established to supervise the demilitarized zone which was located in the Transnistrian region. The Joint Control Commission still supervises the zone,and negotiations to resolve the dispute are ongoing. The negotiations are supported by the Russian Federation,Ukraine,the United States,the European Union,and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Moldova on 11 July 2021. Following the resignation of Ion Chicu,the position of Prime Minister became vacant,with the Parliament being obligated to form a new government within three months. After the expiration of the constitutionally mandated period and two failed attempts to win parliamentary approval for the proposed cabinets,the Constitutional Court ruled on 15 April that the circumstances justifying a dissolution of the parliament were met. President Maia Sandu signed the decree dissolving the Parliament on 28 April and snap parliamentary elections were called on.
