Van Kooten and De Bie were praised for their satirical and socially conscious view of Dutch society and politics. Over the course of three decades their TV show broadcast a new episode every Sunday evening. They played a host of recurring comedy characters, but also imitated well known Dutch politicians and entertainers. Most of the sketches were played only by themselves, with occasional extras and side characters. Apart from their TV shows Van Kooten en De Bie also made books, calendars, musical singles and audio plays. [1]
From the 1970s until the 1990s they were household names in the Dutch-speaking world, drawing in many viewers from Flanders as well. They were a major influence on many Dutch and Flemish satirical sketch shows, including Koefnoen , Kopspijkers , [2] 30 minuten , Draadstaal and In de gloria . Their influence on Dutch society is such that they inspired many neologisms, which entered the daily language and have been added to the dictionary. A 2003 study attributed at least 40 words and expressions to them, with 10 others they popularised. [3]
They won two Zilveren Nipkowschijf awards, one in 1974 and one in 1977. [1] In 1985 they received a honorary Nipkow schijf.
Their popularity is reflected in their 30th place in a 2004 public poll to search the all-time "greatest Dutchman". They were the highest television personalities on the list and as comedians were only preceded by cabaretier Toon Hermans at 22.
The VPRO is a Dutch public broadcaster that is part of the Dutch public broadcasting system. It was founded in 1926 as a liberal Protestant radio station. In the 1950s and 1960s, it gradually became social liberal rather than Protestant, and the original meaning of the acronym was eventually dropped.
Zilveren Nipkowschijf is a Dutch television award that has been given out since 1961 by a selection of Dutch critics.

Tonny Eyk, pseudonym of Teun Eikelboom, is a Dutch composer, arranger, pianist, bandleader, producer, entertainer, columnist and writer. Eyk is also known for his appearances as a jury member in various television shows including Sterrenslag, Soundmixshow and Mini Playbackshow. His first book, Met Tonny Eyk naar de Provence, combines his love of the Tour de France and French gastronomy. Eyk is also an ambassador of the Dutch company Princess Household Appliances. Eyk graduated by majoring in trombone at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Willem Theodoor "Wim T." Schippers is a Dutch artist, comedian, television director, and voice actor. During the 1960s, he worked mostly as a visual artist, associated with the international Fluxus-movement. As a television writer, director, and actor he is responsible for some of the most notable and controversial shows on Dutch televisions from the 1960s to the 1990s, creating a number of lasting characters and enriching the language with terms and expressions first coined in his shows. In addition, he voiced the characters of Ernie and Kermit the Frog on Sesamstraat, the Dutch version of Sesame Street. For his shows, he has written over three hundred songs, and his reputation has changed from being Dutch television's "enfant terrible" to an acknowledged master in a variety of genres.
TROS, originally an acronym for Televisie Radio Omroep Stichting, was a Dutch television and radio organisation part of the Dutch public broadcasting system. This broadcasting association was particularly well known for its entertainment programmes, quizzes and focus on Dutch folk music in programmes like Tros Muziekfeest op het Plein and the digital channel TROS Sterren TV.
In de Gloria was a 2000–01 Flemish TV sketch comedy show, directed by Jan Eelen and produced by the company Woestijnvis. It was a mockumentary series which satirized reality television and human interest shows, especially the way regular people are exploited by media.
Draadstaal is a Dutch satirical sketch comedy television program produced by CCCP and broadcast by VPRO, a Dutch broadcaster. It was created by CCCP and Jeroen van Koningsbrugge and Dennis van de Ven. The first seasons aired 14 September 2007 to 22 November 2010. After a couple of years it was restarted in 2015 and new episodes are still being made in 2020. The show featured a lot of recurring stereotypical comedy characters.
Cornelis Reinier "Kees" van Kooten is a Dutch comedian, television actor, and writer. He formed the duo Van Kooten & De Bie with Wim de Bie from 1972 to 1998.
Guus Kuijer is a Dutch author. He wrote books for children and adults, and is best known for the Madelief series of children's books. For his career contribution to "children's and young adult literature in the broadest sense" he won the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award from the Swedish Arts Council in 2012, the biggest prize in children's literature. As a children's writer he was one of five finalists for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2008.
Willem Philippe "Wim" de Bie was a Dutch comedian, writer and singer. He formed the comedy duo Van Kooten en De Bie with Kees van Kooten. Together they made various satirical TV shows.
Ronflonflon, or Ronflonflon avec Jacques Plafond, was a radio show on the Dutch broadcaster VPRO. It was produced and directed by Wim T. Schippers who also played the principal character and radio host, Jacques Plafond. Between 10 October 1984 and 30 January 1991, 328 episodes were produced, and it became the VPRO's best-listened radio program.
Ellen Jens is a Dutch television director and producer, best known for her collaboration with Wim T. Schippers on VPRO television. She has produced and directed a large number of other television shows, especially on literature and art, and is referred to as a "television legend".
Barend is weer bezig(Barend Does it Again) was a Dutch television show written and directed by Wim T. Schippers with Wim van der Linden, Gied Jaspars, and Ruud van Hemert and broadcast by the VPRO in 1972-1973. The show was produced by Ellen Jens. Four regular episodes and a Christmas special were made. The series caused considerable controversy, particularly because of a scene in which Queen Juliana of the Netherlands was mocked.
De Fred Haché Show is a 1971 Dutch television show written and directed for the VPRO by Wim T. Schippers, Ruud van Hemert, Wim van der Linden, and Gied Jaspars. The show marked the return to television for Schippers, van der Linden, and Jaspars, who had been on the team that was responsible for the controversial 1967 show Hoepla, canceled after three episodes. Like its "sister show" Barend is weer bezig (1972–1973) and Van Oekel's Discohoek, it was an absurdist show with much nudity, linguistic humor, satirical skits, and illogical plot lines.
Wim van der Linden was a Dutch photographer and film and television director. As a photographer he documented slums and subcultures in Amsterdam in the 1960s. His "Tulips", one of four experimental and satirical Sad Movies (1966-1967), is praised as one of the dramatic high points of Dutch film history, and with Wim T. Schippers and others he made groundbreaking and controversial television shows for the VPRO in the 1960s to the 1970s.

Arjan Ederveen Janssen is a Dutch actor, comedian, TV scriptwriter and TV director. He participated in the TV series Theo en Thea, Kreatief met Kurk and 30 minuten and played in the musicals Hairspray and Lang en Gelukkig. He wrote the play Moord in de Kerststal. Ederveen owns a TV production company, called De Toko. His manager is Evelien Jansen.
