Verena Krebs FRHistS (born 1984 in Marburg) is a German historian who specialises in medieval European and African history. She was appointed a professor at the Historical Institute of the University of Bochum in 2017.
Krebs' first monograph,"Medieval Ethiopian Kingship,Craft,and Diplomacy with Latin Europe",received widespread attention upon its publication in 2021 and was very positively reviewed in both academic journals (including by Peter Brown and David Abulafia) [1] [2] and popular media (BBC History Podcast,Smithsonian Magazine,Al Jazeera China). [3] [4] [5]
Krebs studied at the University of Konstanz and graduated with a Master of Arts in History in 2010. In 2014,she was awarded a bi-national doctorate in Medieval History by the University of Konstanz,Germany,and Mekelle University,Ethiopia,for her PhD research on the medieval history of Solomonic Ethiopia,citing Ethiopian historian Taddesse Tamrat as a significant influence on her research. [6] She was a postdoctoral research fellow of the Martin Buber Society in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 2014 to 2017 [7] before being appointed to a non-permanent professorship (Juniorprofessur) at the University of Bochum in 2017.
In 2021,Krebs was named a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS). In March 2022,she was awarded the Dan David Prize,which "recognizes outstanding scholarship that illuminates the past and seeks to anchor public discourse in a deeper understanding of history" for “overturning traditional narratives of African-European relations and cultural exchange,and painting a vivid picture of the role of art,artisans and relics in state-building and diplomacy in medieval Ethiopia”. Krebs spent the academic year 2022/23 as a Member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. [11]

From 1999 until 2016 she was Professor of Medieval History and director of research at the University of Cambridge. She is a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College and Professor Emerita of Medieval History in the University of Cambridge.

David Samuel Harvard Abulafia is an English historian with a particular interest in Italy, Spain and the rest of the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. He spent most of his career at the University of Cambridge, rising to become a professor at the age of 50. He retired in 2017 as Professor Emeritus of Mediterranean History. He is a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He was Chairman of the History Faculty at Cambridge University, 2003-5, and was elected a member of the governing Council of Cambridge University in 2008. He is visiting Beacon Professor at the new University of Gibraltar, where he also serves on the Academic Board. He is a visiting professor at the College of Europe.

Elaine Treharne MArAd FSA FRHistS FEA FLSW was born in Aberystwyth, Wales, in 1964. She is a Senior Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and the Roberta Bowman Denning Professor of the Humanities, Professor of English, Courtesy Professor of German Studies and of Comparative Literature, and a Bass Fellow in Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. She was at the University of Leicester for eighteen years as a lecturer, then professor, head of department, and dean, before emigrating to the USA. She is a Welsh medievalist, focusing on Manuscript Studies, Early English literature, and the History of Text Technologies, particularly of the handmade book. She led Stanford University's online courses on manuscript study entitled Digging Deeper. She is a qualified archivist, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and an Honorary Fellow of the English Association, for whom she was also the first woman chair and President from 2000 to 2005. Treharne was made a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales in April 2020. She is the President of the Teachers of Old English in Britain and Ireland (2022-2025).
Anna Brechta Sapir Abulafia, is a British academic who specialises in religious history. The main focus of her research is medieval Christian-Jewish relations within the broad context of twelfth and thirteenth-century theological and ecclesiastical developments. Since 2015, she has been the professor of the Study of the Abrahamic Religions in the Faculty of Theology and Religion at University of Oxford and a fellow of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
William Mark Ormrod, was a Welsh historian who specialised in the Later Middle Ages of England. Born in South Wales, he studied at King's College, London, and then earned his Doctor of Philosophy at Worcester College, Oxford. He was employed at a number of institutions, eventually settling at the University of York where he became Dean of the History Faculty and director of the Centre for Medieval Studies. He researched and published widely, including nine books and over 80 book chapters. Ormrod retired in 2017 and died of cancer in 2020.

Ethiopian historiography includes the ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern disciplines of recording the history of Ethiopia, including both native and foreign sources. The roots of Ethiopian historical writing can be traced back to the ancient Kingdom of Aksum. These early texts were written in either the Ethiopian Ge'ez script or the Greek alphabet, and included a variety of mediums such as manuscripts and epigraphic inscriptions on monumental stelae and obelisks documenting contemporary events. The writing of history became an established genre in Ethiopian literature during the early Solomonic dynasty (1270–1974). In this period, written histories were usually in the form of royal biographies and dynastic chronicles, supplemented by hagiographic literature and universal histories in the form of annals. Christian mythology became a linchpin of medieval Ethiopian historiography due to works such as the Orthodox Kebra Nagast. This reinforced the genealogical traditions of Ethiopia's Solomonic dynasty rulers, which asserted that they were descendants of Solomon, the legendary King of Israel.
