Vinson Horace Champ (born September 12, 1961) is a former comedian and convicted rapist. He was the winner of Star Search in 1992. In 1997, he was identified as a serial rapist when his DNA and tour schedule were matched up with a series of rapes on college campuses. [1] [2] He is currently serving a 30-to-40-year sentence at Nebraska State Penitentiary. His projected release date is in 2033, [3] after which he will begin two consecutive life-term sentences in Iowa. [4]

Biography

Champ was born on September 12, 1961. He won $100,000 as a comedian on Star Search in 1992. After that, Champ mostly performed on the college circuit. He was known as a nice, respectful comedian who only did "clean" material, [2] [5] which made him a favorite for college bookers. [6]

According to court documents, Champ's criminal record includes physically attacking his 17-year-old former girlfriend in 1996; Champ was around 35 years old at the time. [7]

On May 6, 1997, Champ was spotted fleeing the scene of an attempted rape at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. He was arrested on May 7, 1997, at his apartment in Hollywood, California. The court released him on bail and he left for a trip to the Caribbean. When he returned on May 13, 1997, he was arrested at Newark International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, after detectives in Omaha, Nebraska, connected him to a similar rape at the University of Nebraska. [2] [7] At the time of his arrest, one of Champ's booking agents commented that Champ's schedule resembled "a road map of where these rapes occurred". [8]

Champ followed a consistent pattern in his assaults. He sought out his victims inside college buildings. [9] Each time, he covered the women's heads so they could not identify him, he talked to them during the assault, and he asked each of the women to pray for him afterward. [10]

He had a distinctive modus operandi, preying primarily on elderly women who lived alone. He is suspected of over 100 offences from 1990 to 2009.

Mark Philip Dixie is a British serial rapist and a murderer who was convicted on 22 February 2008 of murdering 18-year-old singer and model Sally Anne Bowman on 25 September 2005 in South Croydon, London. He has 17 other criminal convictions. He was known by various pseudonyms.

Antoni Imiela was a German-born convicted serial rapist who grew up in County Durham, England. He was found guilty of the rape of nine women and girls, and the indecent assault, and attempted rape, of a 10-year-old girl whom he repeatedly punched and throttled. The crimes took place in Surrey, Kent, Berkshire, London, Hertfordshire and Birmingham, and the press dubbed the offender the M25 Rapist after the M25 motorway that passes in the vicinity of all those areas except Birmingham. He died in HM Prison Wakefield on 8 March 2018.

Andrzej Kunowski, known as The Beast of Mława, was a Polish murderer, serial rapist and suspected serial killer. A prolific sex offender in his native country, Kunowski later moved illegally to England, where he murdered 12-year-old Macedonian girl Katerina Koneva in 1997. Sentenced to a whole life order for this crime, he was detained at the HM Prison Frankland until his death in 2009. He remains the prime suspect in the disappearances of three girls between 1992 and 2000, for which he was never charged.

Robert Lee Walden Jr. is an American murderer, serial rapist and suspected serial killer who attacked several women in Tucson, Arizona from 1989 to 1992, raping four and killing two of them. Sentenced to death on one count and to several life terms for his other crimes, Walden confessed to a third murder after his trial, for which he has never been tried.

John Peter Malveaux is an American serial killer and rapist who committed between four and five murders around Opelousas, Louisiana from January to October 1997. Following his arrest and confession to the crimes, Malveaux pleaded guilty on all counts and was given four life terms without parole.

Ricardo Cepates is a Honduran convicted serial rapist and kidnapper who assaulted seven women and girls in the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey, in the early 2000s. His modus operandi was to attack his victims during the late afternoon or early morning in the vicinity of Rutgers University, where some of his victims were attending as students. Cepates was captured the day of his last attack after being accosted by a group of residents.
