Voorhees is a hardcore punk band formed in Durham, England. From early 1991 until late 2001 they released records on international record labels and toured Europe and the USA. [1]
In the late 1980s, vocalist Ian Leck and guitarist Sean Readman were members of Durham straight edge hardcore band Steadfast. In 1990, while still in Steadfast, Leck began a brief side project, heavily inspired by Judge with bassist Buzzard, who had recently been released from prison for grievous bodily harm, drummer Gary Cousins and guitarist Darrell Hindley, who both played in another Durham straight edge hardcore band called False Face. Buzzard departed from the band a few weeks after formation, leading to hiring of David "Brownie" Brown. By the time Steadfast and False Face had broken up in 1991, the four members decided to regroup with the addition of Steadfast guitarist Sean Readman, who had a single rehearsal with Know Your Enemy material, before deciding to distance themselves from those songs and pursue a faster Boston hardcore-inspired sound under a different name. Taking on the name Voorhees, in reference to Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise, the band played their first performance in September 1991 at the Durham Rowing Club in support of punk band Sour Face. Soon after, the recorded their debut demo Everyone's Good at Something... Except Us! in Hartlepool. The demo was recorded for free by Leck, as a part of his college music engineering course. Soon after, they won two free days recording time at Consett's North Studios, but Brown left the group a few days beforehand, leading to Readman performing bass on the recordings. By the time they began performing again, they had hired former-Steadfast bassist Paul Rugman-Jones to take over for Brown. This recording was released as the Violent EP in April 1993 through Armed with Anger records. [2]
The band then opened for Slapshot on their UK headline tour, and recorded two Negative Approach covers for a tribute compilation. Hindley and Cousins left the group around this time, leading to the band recruiting Sour Face drummer Michael Gillham and new guitarist Graeme Nicholls. [2]
The band recorded their debut album Spilling Blood Without Reason at Studio 64 in Middlesbrough with producer Matthew Burke. They had originally written sixteen tracks for the album, but because their name was based on Friday the 13th, they decided to write an additional ten tracks so that each side of vinyl could consist of thirteen tracks. In August 1994, headlined a European tour, intended to be supported by Finnish band Selfish, but when Selfish dropped out Force Macabra were booked to replace them. The tour was planned to last for three and a half weeks, but due to Force Macabra also dropping out, it only lasted two. [2]
Voorhees recorded a John Peel Session for BBC Radio 1 at Maida Vale studios in London in March 1995, which was first broadcast the following month. [3] The session was then re-recorded for a split EP with Stalingrad. At the beginning of 1996, they had their first US headline tour, supported by Hatebreed. After this tour, Readman and Gillham left the band causing the hiring Richard Armitage on guitar and Gareth Pugh on drums. A few days later, Nicholls announced he was moving to San Francisco and could no longer be a part of the band, being replaced by James Atkinson, a local skater. This line-up was set to make its live debut on their 1996 European headline tour, but it was cancelled shortly before it was intended to take place, and instead first performed publicly in Bristol, supported by Stalingrad. Pugh was soon replaced by Local Student Chris, who performed with the band opening for Sick of it All in Bradford and then Agnostic Front in London before being forced to take part in military service in Greece. This meant that Gillham returned to the band for a short period, when they headlined their second US tour with support from Dropdead, Charles Bronson, Devoid of Faith and Kill Your Idols. During this period they recorded the Fireproof EP at Technical Ecstasy studios in New Jersey. After the tour, David Allen became their new drummer and Rugman-Jones left the band to become an environmental biologist after the tour, leading to ban hiring new bassist Andrew Wright. [2]
From August 1998 and April 1999, the band recorded their second album at Lowfold Studios in Lancaster, which would be released under the name 13th through Armed with Anger and Six Weeks records. Wright was asked to leave the band soon after due to his addiction to heroin, with his role briefing being filled by Atkinson, before hiring Steve Stewart. [2]
This line-up toured the US with Kill Your Idols, the Nerve Agents and the Explosion in 1999, and then took part in a European tour. They then recorded their third album Crystal Lake's Legacy, which was released in 2001, before breaking up. [2]
In October 2004, the 'Spilling Blood Without Reason' line-up of Voorhees got together for a one-off show, "Night of the Living Dead at Sea", which was played on a ferry boat on the Mersey River in Liverpool. [2]
On 23 and 24 April 2010, Voorhees re-banded to do shows in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Leeds(UK). These gigs were meant to be with the classic 'Spilling Blood' line-up, but the volcano ash cloud which grounded all flights to and from Europe the week previous meant Graeme and Paul could not make it as they got stuck in the US Sam Layzell filled in for both shows. He also played in Leeds bands such as Closure, Bonestorm and SickFuckinO with Ian Leck. Ian Leck and Sam Layzell have gone on to provide vocals and bass respectively for Rot in Hell alongside fellow Voorhees guitarist James Atkinson. [2]
On Sunday 13 May 2012 Voorhees played an impromptu set at Morrowfest in Nottingham as a tribute to their friend John Paul Morrow who died 10 years ago. This prompted them to reform with a pick and mix line up from all the previous incarnations of the band, they played with Negative Approach in Manchester on Tuesday 16 October 2012, followed by '20 years of Violent' at Bradford 1 in 12 club 23 March 2013, 'Slow End Fest' in Eindhoven 8 June 2013, with Sick of it all (20 years since the first time they played together) in Manchester 28 August, with Indecision in London (Underworld, Camden) on 25 October 2013 and in October 2014 Voorhees returned to Eindhoven for Bloodshed Fest.
Voorhees play the genre hardcore punk, [4] [5] [6] influenced by SSD, Negative Approach and Negative FX. [2] Maximumrocknroll described their music as "harkening back to the days of hardcore bands having something that drove them, the kind of anger and frustration that drives some people out of the room and has others turning it up louder". [5] Kerrang! described the band's sound as a "blistering" cross between "Discharge and Extreme Noise Terror". [7] In his book Armed with Anger, Ian Glasper described them as "ultra raw - Boston hardcore workship... like a bloody machete through buttered brains", [2] and in Trapped in a Scene he described their sound as a "bad-tempered take on brutal old school hardcore". They play a style of grindcore they have dubbed "mincecore". Their lyrical themes have focused on anti-fascism, animal liberation and anarchism. All of its members are vegetarians.

Despite its short existence, the band is considered pivotal in the rise of crust punk, a genre of punk rock that takes influence and elements from extreme metal. They recorded for Peaceville Records and are cited as an early precursor to grindcore. Doom were also a favourite of BBC Radio DJ John Peel.
Jarrod Fletcher Alexander is an American musician who has played with many hardcore punk bands. He has been a member of The Suicide File, A Static Lullaby, Dead Country, and more recently, My Chemical Romance, Alkaline Trio, Matt Skiba, Meg Myers, and Necessary Noise.
Bane is an American hardcore punk band that began in 1995 as a side project between Aaron Dalbec and Damon Bellorado. Dalbec approached Matt Firestone to sing and they played under the moniker of Gateway for a few shows, before Firestone parted ways to focus on other projects. Dalbec then approached Aaron Bedard about singing for Bane. They went into the studio in December 1995 with a few friends and released a five-song demo. The next year saw the release of their first EP, and many shows throughout central Massachusetts. In early 1997, Bane released Free to Think, Free to Be EP, and in 1998 the band released the Holding This Moment 7" and CD collection, and embarked upon their first US tour. Like many other hardcore bands, Bane are known for their promotion of tolerance and unity within the scene.
Los Crudos is an American hardcore punk band from Chicago, Illinois active from 1991 to 1998 and from 2006 onward. Comprising all Latino members, the band paved the way for later Spanish-speaking punk bands in the United States and helped to increase the presence of Latinos in the country's predominantly white punk subculture.
Unbroken is an American metalcore band from San Diego County, California. They were influential in the Southern California hardcore scene during the mid-to-late 1990s. The band chose the name Unbroken because they wanted to emphasize their dedication to the straight edge philosophy of drug abstinence. However, most of the members have since given up this belief.

Indecision was an American hardcore punk band that was started in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn in 1993, and officially disbanded in the summer of 2000 though they still play shows occasionally for charity.
Ensign is an American hardcore punk band from New Jersey. They formed in 1995 and signed with Indecision Records in 1996. They signed to the larger label "next door", Dexter Holland's Nitro Records, in 1998 and finally came to rest at Blackout Records in 2003 after a brief sortie back to Indecision in 2000.
Ensign's second 7-inch EP for Indecision Records followed their self-titled 7-inch debut from May, 1996. It was released in June, 1997, on 7-inch vinyl only. The production run was limited to 4239 on black vinyl, 600 green, 225 white, 106 orange and a further 100 on black vinyl with a different cover to coincide with a European tour. This was inline with Indecision Records tradition of putting out releases by new bands on colored and normal vinyl and was carried through to their next release, Direction of Things to Come. It was later re-released on CD as part of a retrospective compilation, Three Years Two Months Eleven Days, in April 2000 after the band had left to join Nitro Records in 1998.
I Spy was a Canadian hardcore punk band founded in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1991, relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1994, and disbanded in 1996. Combining childish humour and politically oriented emotive hardcore, the group released several records on Recess Records and toured internationally. Front man Todd Kowalski later joined Propagandhi.
The Suicide File was an American hardcore punk band from Boston that formed in April 2001. The band wrote songs with a mostly political message, although many songs also dealt with social and personal problems. Most of the band's output was released on the Southern California-based hardcore label Indecision Records. The band reunited in June 2006 to embark on their first European Tour. Members of the bands are or have been affiliated with The Hope Conspiracy, Death By Stereo, When Tigers Fight, Adamantium, Give Up the Ghost/American Nightmare, Clouds, Panic and many more. Most of these are bands with whom Alexander has drummed for short periods of time. Despite their short tenure, The Suicide File continues to be revered within the hardcore punk community for their musical output and lasting impression on the flourishing Boston hardcore scene. The band since 2006 has played a small number of successfully sized reunion sets.
Concrete Sox are a British crust punk band. They are largely seen as an early crossover thrash band who incorporated many thrash metal-like riffs in the style of their earlier recordings.
Assholeparade is a hardcore band from Gainesville, Florida. They have release two LPs and an EP for No Idea Records, as well as some compilation appearances. They have short aggressive songs. Only two of Assholeparade's original members are left in its current 5-piece setup.
Kill Your Idols is an American hardcore punk band from New York, active from 1995 through 2007 and again from 2013 to the present. They were signed to SideOneDummy Records. Their releases on SideOne were Funeral for a Feeling (2001), a split with 7 Seconds in 2004, and From Companionship to Competition (2005). Other notable releases by the band were No Gimmicks Needed and This Is Just The Beginning... which were released on Blackout! Records. The band released several 7-inch EPs, splits with other bands, multiple compilation tracks, and two full-length LPs in their 11-year run. Most of their records were released on vinyl as well as compact disc. Some were released on different colors of vinyl, different sleeve covers, hand numbered tour presses, and picture discs, making their records a favorite among collectors.
Racebannon was an American noise punk band from Bloomington, Indiana. The band, formed in September 1996, have cited influence ranging from Antioch Arrow to the Melvins, and have also stated that they're heavily influenced by hardcore, hip-hop, heavy metal, jazz, and the blues. The band's sound is noted for being odd and experimental, and the group has been dubbed as "noise rock" or "noise metal" by critics. Since their formation, the band has released numerous albums, extended plays, and splits through a variety of labels, such as Secretly Canadian and Level Plane.
