Reception

Writing for Main Titles, Bob den Hartog said "Without a strong thematic narrative progression, however, these pieces are never completely tied together, which makes W.E. seem more like a wonderful set of isolated concert pieces rather than a wholesome symphony, despite Korzeniowski’s best efforts to include recurring themes. Considering the quality of these well-rounded compositions, this shouldn’t be considered as a strong criticism for the album presentation (well hello, pop song-producer Madonna), but as a film score, it is a drawback from an otherwise outstanding work." [9] A review from Music Muse stated "Abel Korzeniowski delivers one of the most attractive scores of the year. In fact, many of the highlights are worthy “best of the year” material. It seems as if the composer had a genuine sense of passion with this film (despite the criticism it has received for its superficial nature). That sense of magic and romanticism that is ever so prevalent in the music will make you wonder what in the film could have inspired such great music. Unfortunately, on a more technical level, the score fails to live up to its beauty. The fact that Korzeniowski took on different methods of thematic scoring in order to retain some sense of the emotional narrative (regardless of the inevitable flaws it will present) is an impressive way to handle the foolishness of his superiors. In the end, this score is a great success that serves as a model for composers burdened with production hassles everywhere." [10]

Accolades

At the 69th Golden Globe Awards, Korzeniowski received a nomination for Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score, [11] while Madonna won Best Original Song for "Masterpiece". [12] [13] The song was however made ineligible for the similar category at the 84th Academy Awards, as it was not "used either in the body of the film, or as the 'first music cue' in the closing credits"; [14] the song was played more one minute into the credits. [15] Korzeniowski's score further received a nomination from the International Film Music Critics Association Award for Best Original Score for a Drama Film [16] and won the Public Choice Award by the World Soundtrack Academy in 2012. [17] Similarly, "Masterpiece" was also nominated for Best Original Song Written Directly for a Film but lost to Albert Nobbs theme "Lay Your Head Down" by Brian Byrne and Glenn Close. [18]

Alex Heffes is a British film composer. His film scores include those for the BAFTA-winning Touching the Void, and Oscar-winning movies One Day in September, The Last King of Scotland, and Inside Job. The Public Choice Award for the Best Score of the Year is an award by the World Soundtrack Academy. W.E. is a 2011 historical romantic drama film written and directed by Madonna and starring Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, Oscar Isaac, Richard Coyle, and James D'Arcy. The screenplay was co-written by Alek Keshishian, who previously worked with Madonna on her 1991 documentary Truth or Dare and two of her music videos. Although the film was panned by critics and was a box office bomb, it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design. The album was released digitally on October 2, 2015 and through physical formats on October 30 by Sony Classical. It consisted the film's original score composed by Thomas Newman, while also featured two original songs that are not included in the album.

Albert Nobbs (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the score album to the 2011 film Albert Nobbs directed by Rodrigo García, starring Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska and Aaron Johnson. The album, which released by Varèse Sarabande on 13 December 2011, featured score composed by Irish composer, arranger and conductor Brian Byrne, and an original song "Lay Your Head Down" written by Close and performed by Sinéad O'Connor. The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 69th Golden Globe Awards, and won the 16th Satellite Awards in the same category. It was chosen as one of the 39 songs to be eligible for nominations at the Best Original Song at the 84th Academy Awards, but failed to enter the final list of nominations. Byrne won the Best Original Score category at the 9th Irish Film & Television Awards.
