W1XAY was one of the first television stations in the United States. It debuted on June 14, 1928. At that time, it was the sister station of "WLEX" in Lexington, Massachusetts, United States (near Boston), the current day WVEI in Worcester.

The television station broadcast on a wavelength of 85.7 meters (3.5 MHz), [1] with 48 vertical lines of resolution, and 18 frames per second. It shut down in March 1930.

The station was owned by the Boston Post, which also owned WLEX.

The WLEX call letters now reside with WLEX-TV, the NBC television network affiliate in Lexington, Kentucky.

Beginning in 1968, Halper worked as a radio disc jockey and music director, and is credited with discovering the progressive rock band Rush while at WMMS in Cleveland in 1974. She has taught courses in broadcasting, media criticism, and media history, and is author of a number of books, including the first book-length study devoted to the history of women in American broadcasting, Invisible Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting. In March 2023, it was announced that she would be inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame and receive the Pioneer Broadcaster Award.

WMNE was a pioneer commercial FM radio station, which was the second of two mountain-top broadcasting stations established by the Yankee Network. It began regular programming, as experimental station W1XER, in December 1940. In 1941 it was licensed for commercial operation from studios in Boston, initially with the call sign W39B, which was changed to WMTW in 1943. In late 1946 the station's designated community of license was changed to Portland, Maine, and its call letters became WMNE.
