Malheur County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census,the population was 31,571. Its county seat is Vale,and its largest city is Ontario. The county was named after the Malheur River,which runs through the county. The word "malheur" is French for misfortune or tragedy. Malheur County is included in the Ontario,Oregon Micropolitan Statistical Area,which is also included in the Boise Combined Statistical Area. It is included in the eight-county definition of Eastern Oregon.

He was the Attorney General of Oregon from 1993 to 1997 and a justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from 1997 to 2001. Kulongoski has served in all three branches of the Oregon state government.
David Ernest McReynolds was an American politician and social activist who was a prominent democratic socialist and pacifist activist. He described himself as "a peace movement bureaucrat" during his 40-year career with the War Resisters League. He was a resident of New York City. McReynolds was twice a candidate for President of the United States,running atop the ticket of the Socialist Party USA in 1980 and 2000. He was America's first openly gay presidential candidate.
Charles Linza McNary was an American Republican politician from Oregon. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1917 to 1944 and was Senate Minority Leader from 1933 to 1944. In the Senate,McNary helped to pass legislation that led to the construction of Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River,and worked on agricultural and forestry issues. He also supported many of the New Deal programs at the beginning of the Great Depression. Until Mark Hatfield surpassed his mark in 1993,he was Oregon's longest-serving senator.

Mary Cal Hollis is an American activist. She was a third-party candidate for President of the United States in the 1996 U.S. presidential election,representing the Socialist Party USA (SPUSA) with running mate Eric Chester. Hollis and Chester also received the endorsement and ballot line of Vermont's Liberty Union Party,receiving 674 votes (80.1%) in their primary. Hollis appeared on the syndicated radio program Democracy Now! with two other socialist presidential candidates for a discussion and debate. The SPUSA ticket received 4,765 votes in the general election.

Originally called the Oregon Peace Party,it was accepted as the sixth minor statewide political party in Oregon on August 22,2008. This allowed the party to nominate Ralph Nader as its candidate in the 2008 U.S. presidential election. In September 2009,the party changed its name to the Oregon Progressive Party,to "more accurately reflects the party's positions" on issues besides peace,including "social justice,consumer advocacy,environmental protection,and worker's rights."
Jay Morgan Philpot is an American attorney and Republican Party politician. He was a member of the Utah House of Representatives from 2001 to 2004,representing District 45 in Salt Lake County from 2001 to 2004. He was vice-chair of the Utah Republican Party from 2009 and 2010. Philpot was the 2010 Republican nominee for Utah's 2nd congressional district,losing to Democrat Jim Matheson. He unsuccessfully ran for governor of Utah in 2012 and Utah State Senate in 2016.

Incumbent Republican Bev Clarno had agreed not to run for a full term. Clarno was appointed by Governor Kate Brown to replace Dennis Richardson,who died of cancer during his term.
