Weightlifting at the 2022 Commonwealth Games – Qualification

There was a nominal total of 180 quota places available for weightlifting at the 2022 Commonwealth Games; 90 each for men and women. [1]

Rules

Each Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) is restricted to one entry per weight category, which equates to a maximum quota of sixteen qualified weightlifters. Those entered may contest one category only.

NOCs achieve qualification places according to their position in the joint team classification by points adding those scored in the 2014 and 2015 World Championships. One continental qualification event is held for each continent in 2016. Only NOCs which have not gained quota places in the Main Qualification Events may obtain quota places.

Nauru competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. The country's participation in Brazil was its sixth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Nauru's delegation included two participants: Ovini Uera, a judoka in the men's middleweight judo category; and Elson Brechtefeld in the men's 56 kg weightlifting competition. Uera qualified as Nauru's top-ranked judoka, in the IJF World Ranking List through a quota slot from the Oceania Judo Union. Brechtefeld qualified by grant from the International Weightlifting Federation of an unused quota place. Uera was eliminated by Varlam Liparteliani in the round of 16 and Brechtefeld finished 15th in his event.

Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Cuban delegation was their smallest since 1964, which coincidentally was also in Tokyo. It was the nation's twenty-first appearance at the Summer Olympics. Cuba improved on its 2016 result, by winning 7 gold and 15 total medals after 5 and 11 in Rio.

The weightlifting competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are scheduled to run from 7 to 11 August at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. Several significant changes are instituted in the weightlifting program for Paris 2024, as the number of categories is trimmed from fourteen in Tokyo to ten. Furthermore, a total of 120 weightlifters, with an equal split between men and women, will compete in each of the ten weight classes, a massive drop from a full roster size of 196 at the previous Games.
