OriginsPhilanthropists Gary and Mary West made their money through West Corporation, a private telecommunications provider based in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2006, the Wests sold their shares of the company for $1.4 billion. West Health is a group of non-profit organizations in the United States that is working to lower healthcare costs so that seniors can successfully age in place.

West Health is funded by philanthropists Gary and Mary West. It includes the Gary and Mary West Health Institute (WHI), the Gary and Mary West Foundation, and the Gary and Mary West Health Policy Center.

West Health Institute

The WHI was created in 2009 with a $45 million grant from the West Foundation. It is an independent, medical research organization that works with healthcare providers and research institutions to lower healthcare costs and improve healthcare delivery and social services for seniors. Current projects include research into geriatric emergency care, improved services and oral health for seniors and ongoing public opinion research on healthcare costs.

Early research from WHI developed the Sense4Baby wireless maternal and fetal monitor for high-risk pregnancies, which they licensed to AirStrip. WHI also researched hospital wireless communication technology and interoperability software that was eventually licensed to the Center for Medical Interoperability

The Center is a separate organization led by hospital and health system CEOs to drive interoperability of medical technology. The Center is also funded by the Gary and Mary West Foundation.[ citation needed ]

West Health Policy Center

The Gary and Mary West Health Policy Center is a nonprofit, non-partisan resource in Washington, D.C. that provides policy information and proposals to lower healthcare costs and improve healthcare in the U.S. for seniors. Launched in January 2012, it is researching ways to enable seniors to independently age in place through improved healthcare delivery and social services.

Gary and Mary West Foundation

The Gary and Mary West Foundation provides funding to the WHI, the West Health Policy Center and other senior-focused national and community-based organizations. The West Foundation accepts grant proposals by invitation only, and has awarded more than $211 million since its inception. [1]

Shelley Lyford became President and CEO of West Health on Sept. 4, 2015.

Headquarters

West Health is headquartered in San Diego, California. In December 2009, it opened its 3,600-square-foot (330 m2) research facility, which contains a classroom for workshops and seminars. It also has an office in Washington D.C.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is one of twelve agencies within the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The agency is headquartered in North Bethesda, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C.. UC San Diego Health is the academic health system of the University of California, San Diego in San Diego, California. It is the only academic health system serving San Diego and has one of three adult Level I trauma centers in the region. In operation since 1966, it comprises three major hospitals: UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, and UC San Diego Health East Campus Medical Center in East County. Health policy can be defined as the "decisions, plans, and actions that are undertaken to achieve specific healthcare goals within a society". According to the World Health Organization, an explicit health policy can achieve several things: it defines a vision for the future; it outlines priorities and the expected roles of different groups; and it builds consensus and informs people.

Health services research (HSR) became a burgeoning field in North America in the 1960s, when scientific information and policy deliberation began to coalesce. Sometimes also referred to as health systems research or health policy and systems research (HPSR), HSR is a multidisciplinary scientific field that examines how people get access to health care practitioners and health care services, how much care costs, and what happens to patients as a result of this care. HSR utilizes all qualitative and quantitative methods across the board to ask questions of the healthcare system. It focuses on performance, quality, effectiveness and efficiency of health care services as they relate to health problems of individuals and populations, as well as health care systems and addresses wide-ranging topics of structure, processes, and organization of health care services; their use and people's access to services; efficiency and effectiveness of health care services; the quality of healthcare services and its relationship to health status, and; the uses of medical knowledge.

CHI-California Healthcare Institute is a private, non-profit public policy research and advocacy organization, representing more than 250 universities, academic research centers, biotechnology, and medical device companies. Founded in 1993, and based in La Jolla, California, CHI has offices in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento, California. CHI publishes an annual California Biomedical Industry report, providing data on the scope and scale of academic and commercial life sciences research and development within the state. In 2008, the industry employed more than 270,000 Californians and produced revenues in excess of $75 billion.

Healthcare reform in the United States has a long history. Reforms have often been proposed but have rarely been accomplished. Eric Jeffrey Topol is an American cardiologist, scientist, and author. He is the founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, a professor of Molecular Medicine and Executive Vice-President at Scripps Research Institute, and a senior consultant at the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California. Health information technology (HIT) is health technology, particularly information technology, applied to health and health care. It supports health information management across computerized systems and the secure exchange of health information between consumers, providers, payers, and quality monitors. Based on a 2008 report on a small series of studies conducted at four sites that provide ambulatory care – three U.S. medical centers and one in the Netherlands, the use of electronic health records (EHRs) was viewed as the most promising tool for improving the overall quality, safety and efficiency of the health delivery system.

HealthPartners is an integrated, nonprofit health care provider and health insurance company located in Bloomington, Minnesota offering care, coverage, research and education to its members, patients and the community.

AcademyHealth is a nonpartisan, nonprofit professional organization dedicated to advancing the fields of health services research and health policy. It is a professional organization for health services researchers, health policy analysts, and health practitioners, and it is a nonpartisan source for health research and policy. The organization was founded in 2000, in a merger between the Alpha Center and the Association for Health Services Research (AHSR). In 2008, the organization had approximately 4000 health services researcher members.

Don Jones is Vice President of Global Strategy and Market Development at Qualcomm Life, and is considered a pioneer in the Wireless Health field. Jones also serves on the boards of the American Telemedicine Association, the Alliance Healthcare Foundation, and the Wireless Life Sciences Alliance, which Jones also co-founded. In 2010, Jones was named to Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals’Archived 2011-08-07 at the Wayback Machine Consumer Products Innovations Board.

Health care analytics is the health care analysis activities that can be undertaken as a result of data collected from four areas within healthcare; claims and cost data, pharmaceutical and research and development (R&D) data, clinical data, and patient behavior and sentiment data (patient behaviors and preferences,. Health care analytics is a growing industry in the United States, expected to grow to more than $31 billion by 2022. The industry focuses on the areas of clinical analysis, financial analysis, supply chain analysis, as well as marketing, fraud and HR analysis.

Patricia Anne Gabow is an American academic physician, medical researcher, healthcare executive, author and lecturer. Specializing in nephrology, she joined the department of medicine, division of renal diseases, at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1973, advancing to a full professorship in 1987; she is presently Professor Emerita. She was the principal investigator on the National Institutes of Health Human Polycystic Kidney Disease research grant, which ran from 1985 to 1999, and defined the clinical manifestations and genetics of the disease in adults and children.

Helen L. Smits was a health policy influencer and advocate in the United States, and lent her voice to several healthcare initiatives abroad. Most notably, she was a recipient of the Fulbright scholarship and served under the Carter and Clinton administrations. She also held positions in government organizations including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Healthcare Financing Administration.
