Founded in 1948 as a non-sectarian, coeducational University, Brandeis was established on the site of the former Middlesex University. The university is named after Louis Brandeis, a former Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

By 2010, a rapidly expanding student body saw the Mesivta move to a 27,000-square-foot (2,500 m2) campus in Lawrence, New York, where it currently operates.
