The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (EDAT) is the department of the Western Cape government responsible for economic policy, economic planning and economic development within the province. It is also liable for promoting and developing the provincial tourism sector.

Contents

As of May 2019, the political head of the department has been Provincial Minister David Maynier. [2] He also oversees the Provincial Treasury. The non-political head is Solly Fourie.

Democratic Alliance (South Africa) Political party in South Africa formed in 2000

The Democratic Alliance is a South African political party and the official opposition to the ruling African National Congress (ANC). The current leader of the party is John Steenhuisen, who was announced as the new leader on 1 November 2020 after the party's Federal Congress. He had previously acted as the interim leader of the party from November 2019 to November 2020 when the then party leader Mmusi Maimane resigned. Helen Zille is chairperson of both the Federal Council and the Federal Executive, the highest decision-making structures of the party. The party is broadly centrist, and has been attributed both centre-left and centre-right policies. It is a member of Liberal International and the Africa Liberal Network. The DA traces its roots to the founding of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party in 1959, with many mergers and name changes between that time and the present.

Ebrahim Rasool

Ebrahim Rasool is a South African politician and diplomat who served as the South African Ambassador to the United States from 2010 to 2015, as a Member of the National Assembly from 2009 to 2010, and as the 5th Premier of the Western Cape from 2004 to 2008. He is a member of the African National Congress and has held various leadership positions in the party.

Daniel Plato, better known as Dan Plato, is a South African politician and the current Mayor of Cape Town since 6 November 2018. He previously held the position from May 2009, until June 2011. From 2011 to 2018, he was a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament and the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Community Safety.

Economy of the Western Cape

The economy of the Western Cape in South Africa is dominated by the city of Cape Town, which accounts for 72% of the Western Cape's economic activity in 2016. The single largest contributor to the region's economy is the financial and business services sector, followed by manufacturing. Close to 30% of the gross regional product comes from foreign trade with agricultural products and wine dominating exports. High-tech industries, international call centres, fashion design, advertising and TV production are niche industries rapidly gaining in importance.

Chris Hunsinger

Chris Hunsinger is a South African politician, a Member of the South African Parliament since 2014, Caucus Whip and Treasurer with the Democratic Alliance. He was appointed by the then Leader of the Opposition Mmusi Maimane on 5 June 2019 and retained by the current Leader of the Opposition John Steenhuisen in October 2019 and again in December 2020, as The Shadow Minister of Transport. Hunsinger was re-elected to Parliament on 6 June 2019. He speaks and writes about issues related to consumer and commodity needs in transport, including safety, planning, finance and management with South African road, rail, maritime, and aviation service providers.

Stanley Mathabatha 4th Premier of Limpopo

Chupu Stanley Mathabatha is a South African politician and the current premier of the Limpopo province. Mathabatha is a former Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) guerrilla, he is also the Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo Province since February 2014.

Alan Winde 8th Premier of the Western Cape (born 1965)

Alan Richard Winde is a South African politician and businessman. He is the 8th and current Premier of the Western Cape, having held the position since 2019. He has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 1999. Winde is a member of the Democratic Alliance.

Tokozile Xasa is a South African politician, replaced as Minister of Tourism of South Africa by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his cabinet re-shuffle on 26 February 2018. Under Xasa's watch SA Tourism, an entity under the Department of Tourism, spent R6.9 million on the PR services of Bell Pottinger, at the same time the controversial Gupta Family were using Bell Pottinger to sow racial division in South Africa. Xasa was the Minister of Sport and Recreation from 26 February 2018 to 29 May 2019.

Beverley Schäfer South African politician

Beverley Ann Schäfer is a South African politician serving as the Deputy Speaker of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since May 2019. She served as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Economic Opportunities from November 2018 to May 2019. Between June 2014 and October 2018, she served as the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Economic Opportunities, Tourism and Agriculture in the provincial parliament. She was the Cape Town City Councillor for Ward 54 from 2011 to 2014. She is a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

The marine protected areas of South Africa are in an area of coastline or ocean within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Republic of South Africa that is protected in terms of specific legislation for the benefit of the environment and the people who live in and use it. An MPA is a place where marine life can thrive under less pressure than unprotected areas. They are like underwater parks, and this healthy environment can benefit neighbouring areas.

Anton Wilhelm Bredell is a South African politician for the Democratic Alliance. He is the current Western Cape Provincial Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning and a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.

Mac Jack South African politician

McCollen Ntsikelelo Jack, known as Mac Jack, was a South African educator and politician. A member of the African National Congress, Jack was appointed to the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature in June 2013. He served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport, Safety and Liaison from June 2013 until May 2014, when he was appointed the MEC for Health. Following a cabinet reshuffle in March 2016, he was appointed the MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism. Jack held the position until his appointment as MEC for Education in May 2019, despite him briefly being demoted from the Executive Council in May 2017.

The Western Cape Department of Community Safety is the department of the Western Cape government responsible for policing. As of May 2019, its political head is Albert Fritz.

Makalo Petrus Mohale is a South African lawyer and African National Congress politician serving as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) since 28 May 2019. Mohale is the provincial chairperson of the African National Congress Youth League.

Xolile Edmund Nqatha is a South African politician. He has been the Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs since 2019. A member of the African National Congress, he has been a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since 2009. Nqatha served as the MEC for Rural Development and Agrarian Reform from 2018 to 2019. He is also the provincial secretary of the South African Communist Party.
