Wiley Francis Mitchell Jr. (born April 23, 1932) is an attorney and former politician in Virginia.

Early life and education

A native of North Carolina, Mitchell graduated from Wake Forest University with a bachelor's degree in 1952 and in 1954 graduated from Wake Forest Law School. [1]

Political career

Mitchell was elected a member of the Alexandria City Council, serving from 1967 to 1976 as a Republican. He received the most votes for city council and was Vice-Mayor from 1972 to 1975. In 1975, he was the Republican nominee in Senate District 30 and defeated incumbent Leroy S. Bendheim. [2] In the Virginia Senate, Mitchell served as Minority Floor Leader from 1984 to 88. In 1988, Mitchell resigned his seat to be the Senior General Counsel for Norfolk Southern Corporation. [3]

Private practice

While serving as General Counsel at Norfolk Southern, Mitchell was also president of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel. Today he is in private practice in Norfolk, Virginia and holds leadership positions as board member of The Nature Conservancy of Virginia, the Virginia Beach Foundation, and the Sorensen Institute of the University of Virginia, Trustee of the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, a member of the Regional Board of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Virginia Senate Ethics Advisory Panel. Mitchell also serves as a board member of Virginians for High Speed Rail and as a trustee of the Virginia Rail Policy Institute. He is a former board member of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and was for many years chairman of the Chamber's Government Affairs Committee.

Frederick Blair Wimbush, is a retired American railroad executive and lawyer. He continues to be a civic and professional leader. From 1980 to 2004, Wimbush progressed through positions of increasing responsibility in the Norfolk and Western Railway Company and Norfolk Southern Corporation Law Departments, including senior general counsel in 2002. In June 2004, he was elected vice president, real estate of Norfolk Southern Corporation, parent company of Norfolk Southern Railway Company. In November 2007, he became the first, and as of August 11, 2012, the only, executive level Corporate Sustainability Officer in the railroad industry, in addition to his real estate position. He managed several large conservation and energy efficiency projects for the company and has spoken on corporate sustainability at several corporate and educational conferences. He retired from Norfolk Southern Corporation after 35 years of service on May 1, 2015. Wimbush has served on the boards of the Hampton Roads Association of Commercial Real Estate, Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance, and the Monarch Bank Norfolk City Board. On April 4, 2015, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that Wimbush had been appointed to the Virginia Port Authority board. On June 24, 2016, Governor McAuliffe reappointed Wimbush to a full five-year term ending June 30, 2021.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Stanley C. Walker</span> American politician

Stanley Clay Walker was a long-time Democratic politician, elected in 1963 to represent Norfolk, Virginia as a delegate to the Virginia General Assembly, and in 1971 winning election to represent the city and surrounding areas in the Virginia Senate, at first from the 5th district and after redistricting following the 1980 census representing the 6th district. Jacqueline "Jackie" Hope Glass is an American politician and consultant from Virginia. A Democrat, she was first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in a special election in 2022, winning the seat vacated by retiring Delegate Jay Jones. Glass represents the 89th district, which covers part of the city of Norfolk.
