William J. Poorvu is an American real estate investor [1] and adjunct professor in entrepreneurship,Emeritus at Harvard Business School. [2] He was an adjunct professor on the HBS faculty from 1973 until 2002. [3]
Poorvu earned his B.A. from Yale University in 1956 and his MBA from HBS in 1958. [3]
Poorvu is the co-founder,chairman,and co-chair of the advisory board of the hedge fund The Baupost Group, [4] currently led by Seth Klarman with $29.4 billion AUM in 2012. He is a member of the Carnegie Corporation Investment Committee and a former member of the Yale University Investment Committee and of the Yale University Council. He is a Trustee of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. [5] In April 2013,he was elected to the American Academy of Arts &Sciences. "Lew" Lehrman is an American investment banker,businessman,Republican politician,economist,and historian who supports the ongoing study of American history based on original source documents. He was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and the Lincoln Forum. Lehrman authored Lincoln at Peoria:The Turning Point,(2008),Lincoln "by littles" (2013). Churchill,Roosevelt &Company (2017) and Lincoln &Churchill:Statesmen at War (2018). His works on monetary policy include True Gold Standard,Newly Revised and Enlarged,Second Edition (2012) and Money,Gold,and History (2013) as well as co-authoring Money and the Coming World Order (1976) and The Case for Gold (1982). Lehrman writes for the Lincoln Institute which has created websites on the 16th President. In 1982 Lehrman ran for Governor of New York,in which he opposed Democratic candidate Mario Cuomo,losing the election by two percentage points. He is a senior partner at L. E. Lehrman &Co.,an investment firm he established in 1981. He is also the chairman of the Lehrman Institute,a public policy research and grant making foundation founded in 1972. He and Richard Gilder were awarded the National Humanities Medal in an Oval Office ceremony on Thursday,November 10,2005. The Medal was presented by President George W. Bush. He converted to Catholicism.

The Brigham–Kanner Property Rights Prize is awarded each Fall by the William &Mary Law School,at the Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Conference. The Conference and Prize were proposed in 2003 by Joseph T. Waldo,a graduate of the Marshall-Wythe School of Law with the support of the then Dean of the Law School,W. Taylor Reveley,III,who would later become president of the college. The Conference and Prize were inaugurated in 2004. The Conference and Prize are named after Toby Prince Brigham and Gideon Kanner for "their contributions to private property rights,their efforts to advance the constitutional protection of property,and their accomplishments in preserving the important role that private property plays in protecting individual and civil rights." Toby Prince Brigham is a founding partner of Brigham Moore in Florida. Gideon Kanner is professor of law emeritus at the Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.
