Tommy George Thompson is an American politician who served as the 19th United States secretary of Health and Human Services from 2001 to 2005 in the cabinet of President George W. Bush. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the 42nd governor of Wisconsin from 1987 to 2001 and as the Republican leader of the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1981 to 1987.

Before the election, 61 Assembly seats were held by Republicans and 38 seats were held by Democrats. The primary election was held on August 9, 2022.
