The European Handball Federation (EHF) is the umbrella organisation for European handball. Founded on 17 November 1991, it is made of 50 member federations and two associated federations, and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria.

It is the second-tier competition of European club handball, ranking only below the EHF Champions League. Rokometni klub Gorenje Velenje, commonly referred to as RK Gorenje Velenje or simply Gorenje, is a Slovenian handball club from Velenje that competes in the Slovenian First League, the top tier of Slovenian handball. They play their games at the Red Hall. The club has won four Slovenian Championships and three Slovenian cup titles. Gorenje also participated in the EHF competitions for many seasons, including the EHF Cup, the EHF Cup Winners' Cup, and the EHF Champions League. Together with Celje, they are the only club that have participated in every season of the Slovenian First League since its formation in 1991.

The 2011–12 EHF Women's Champions League was the nineteenth edition of the EHF Women's Champions League, the top continental handball event for club teams in Europe, organized and supervised by the European Handball Federation. Larvik HK entered the competition as title holders after beating SD Itxako in past season's final.
The 2011–12 EHF Women's Cup Winners' Cup is the 36th edition of the EHF Women's Cup Winners' Cup, the continental event for domestic cup winners in Europe. FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria entered the competition as title holders, following triumphed over CB Mar Alicante with an aggregate score of 57–52 in the previous year's finals. The Hungarian team went to the final in this season as well, where they successfully defended their title against Viborg HK with a 31–30 win both on the home and away leg, producing a 62–60 aggregate score.
The EHF coefficient rank is a list made by European Handball Federation. The list is a result of the clubs of the EHF member federations' results in the EHF Champions League (CL), EHF European League (EL), EHF Cup Winners' Cup (CWC) and EHF European Cup (EC) the past three seasons. Most national federations have five teams in the above-mentioned competitions. There are, however, differences between which competitions they qualify for and in which round they enter. If a national federation has more than one team in the same competition, they may enter the same competition in different rounds. For example, the national federations that have two teams in the women's Champions League: The national champions qualify directly for the group stage, while the runners-up start in the qualification round.
The Russian Women's Handball Superleague is the premier women's handball competition in Russia. Currently eleven clubs take part in the competition, with the top eight playing the championship play-offs.

Montenegrin women's handball clubs are participating in the EHF competitions since the season 1984/85.
At the earlier times, Montenegrin teams represented SFR Yugoslavia or FR Yugoslavia in European competitions, and from 2006 and Montenegrin independence, they qualify through Montenegrin First League of Women's Handball and Montenegrin Women's Handball Cup.
