Yarning: The language and culture magazine, (formerly Defence Linguist Magazine) is an international quarterly magazine, published by the Australian Department of Defence. [1] The feature editions focus on language, linguistic experiences, and the intersections of culture and communication. [2] [3] [4]

Contents

In June 2023, the magazine received an endorsement from J. Angelo Berbotto [5] the President of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators. [6] Notable contributors to the magazine have included Australian award-winning actor, Jack Thompson, AM, [7] and the Australian Chief of the Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, AO, DSC. [8]

In October 2023, Chief of Personnel, Lieutenant General Natasha Fox, AO, CSC , signed on as the publications official Patron. [9] [10]

History

The magazine was founded by Paul Thomson in July 2022. [10] Originally titled Defence Linguist Magazine, [11] the name was changed to its current name after running a competition in the first edition. [12] [13]

The term 'yarning' is an Australian English word used to describe the sharing of knowledge and stories in a culturally respectful way with a view to building relationships. [14] [15]

Technical translation is a type of specialized translation involving the translation of documents produced by technical writers, or more specifically, texts which relate to technological subject areas or texts which deal with the practical application of scientific and technological information. While the presence of specialized terminology is a feature of technical texts, specialized terminology alone is not sufficient for classifying a text as "technical" since numerous disciplines and subjects which are not "technical" possess what can be regarded as specialized terminology. Technical translation covers the translation of many kinds of specialized texts and requires a high level of subject knowledge and mastery of the relevant terminology and writing conventions.

A senior enlisted advisor (SEA) in the United States Armed Forces is the most senior enlisted service member in a unit, and acts as an advisor to the commanding officer. Formally, E-9 billets for the senior enlisted advisor are established at service unit, command, major command, force, or fleet levels to the SEAs/CSELs of DoD Agencies and the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. SEAs are also known as command senior enlisted leaders (CSEL). In Touch, is a digital quarterly periodical produced by the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT). The periodical is free to access and in 2022, the publication won the FIT Prize for best Periodical.

The Allied Translator and Interpreter Section (ATIS), also known as the Allied Translator and Interpreter Service or Allied Translator and Intelligence Service, was a joint Australian/American World War II intelligence agency which served as a centralized allied intelligence unit for the translation of intercepted Japanese communications, interrogations and negotiations in the Pacific Theater of Operations between September 1942 and December 1945. During the last few months of operation ATIS primarily focused on investigation of Japanese war crimes. The section was officially disbanded on April 30, 1946.

Mission Essential American defense contractor

Mission Essential is a government contractor primarily serving intelligence and military clients. It is a provider of translators and interpreters to the US government. The company is based in New Albany, Ohio, with an office in Herndon, Virginia.

Major General Simone Louise Wilkie, is a retired Australian Army officer who was the Australian Deputy National Commander in the War in Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012. She was Assistant Chief of Staff to General David Petraeus during the Iraq War troop surge of 2007, and was the first female Commanding Officer of the Royal Military College, Duntroon and Commandant at the Army Recruit Training Centre at Kapooka. In March 2013 the Minister for Defence, Stephen Smith, announced her promotion to major general to take over as Commander of the Australian Defence College in July 2013.

Elizabeth A. Thomson is an Australian linguist. She is an adjunct professor in the Division of Learning and Teaching at Charles Sturt University, and Principal Honorary Fellow of the School of Humanities and Social Inquiry at the University of Wollongong. She is known for her research in linguistics, language education and training, language other than English and curriculum & assessment design, and has made contributions to the field of English and Japanese linguistics from the Systemic Functional perspective. She is a foundation member of the Japan Association of Systemic Functional Linguistics (JASFL), a member of the International Systemic Functional Linguistics Association (ISFLA) and the Australian Systemic Functional Linguistics Association (ASFLA), and also an associate member of The Council of Australasian University Leaders in Learning and Teaching and The Australasian Council on Open, Distance and e-Learning (ACODE).

Lieutenant General Natasha Anne Fox, is a senior officer in the Australian Army. She joined the army via the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in 1988 and has spent much of her career in logistics and training roles. She served as Commanding Officer/Chief Instructor at ADFA from 2009 to 2010, and deployed on operations to Israel, Syria and Lebanon and to Afghanistan. She was Head People Capability from November 2018 to December 2021, Deputy Chief of Army from February 2022 to June 2023, and was appointed the inaugural Chief of Personnel on 5 June 2023. She was both the first woman to serve as a deputy service chief and the first woman to be promoted to three-star rank in the Australian Defence Force.
