The Yayoi Kusama Museum is a contemporary art museum in Tokyo, Japan dedicated to the work of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. [1] The Museum is located in the Shinjuku Ward, in the western suburbs of Tokyo, Japan. [2] [3]

Contents

The five-floor building was designed by the Japanese architecture firm Kume Sekkei. [4] Construction was completed in 2014, [5] and it opened in 2017 with an inaugural exhibition of 600 of Kusama's works. [6] One floor of the museum is dedicated to one of Kusama's infinity room installations, titled “Pumpkins Screaming About Love Beyond Infinity. [7]

The museum admits 200 visitors per day, based on timed tickets. [8] [7] In 2018, a year after its opening, the museum was rated number one on Time Out's global do list. [9]

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is a museum on one end of the seven-kilometer-long (4.3 mi) Corniche in Doha, Qatar. As per the architect I. M. Pei's specifications, the museum is built on an island off an artificial projecting peninsula near the traditional dhow harbor. A purpose-built park surrounds the edifice on the eastern and southern facades while two bridges connect the southern front facade of the property with the main peninsula that holds the park. The western and northern facades are marked by the harbor showcasing the Qatari seafaring past. In September 2017, Qatar Museums appointed Julia Gonnella as new director of MIA.

Alexandra Munroe, Ph.D., is a curator, Asia scholar, and author focusing on art, culture, and institutional global strategy. She has produced over 40 exhibitions and published pioneering scholarship on modern and contemporary Asian art. She organized the first major North American retrospectives of artists Yayoi Kusama (1989), Daido Moriyama (1999), Yoko Ono (2000), Mu Xin (2001), Cai Guo-Qiang (2008), and Lee Ufan (2011), among others, and has brought such historic avant-garde movements as Gutai, Mono-ha, and Chinese conceptual art, as well as Japanese otaku culture, to international attention. Her project Japanese Art after 1945: Scream Against the Sky (1994) is recognized for initiating the field of postwar Japanese art history in North America. Recently, Munroe was lead curator of the Guggenheim’s exhibition, Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World, which the New York Times named as one of 2017’s top ten exhibitions and ARTnews named as one of the decade’s top 25 most influential shows. Credited for the far-reaching impact of her exhibitions and scholarship bolstering knowledge of postwar Japanese art history in America and Japan, she received the 2017 Japan Foundation Award and the 2018 Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award, both bestowed by the government of Japan.

Sky, also known as 605 West 42nd Street, is a mixed-use building at 42nd Street and 11th Avenue in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Developed by the Moinian Group, the 71-story tower contains luxury rental residences designed by the Rockwell Group, ranging from studios to two bedrooms and includes the Vue Penthouse Collection. Sky features over 70,000 square feet of amenity space, mostly operated by Life Time Fitness, which includes a multi-level gym, water club and LifeSpa, lap pool, professional size basketball court, two outdoor zero edge pools, and an outdoor park. Shōji Hayashi was a Japanese architect. As chief architect of Nikken Sekkei, Ltd., he designed many notable buildings, including the Palaceside Building in Tokyo, which was selected as one of 20 works of modern Japanese architecture by Docomomo Japan. He was chairman of the Japan Institute of Architects (1990–1992) and an honorary fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara or Museum MACAN is an art museum at Kebon Jeruk in Jakarta, Indonesia. The museum is the first in Indonesia to have a collection of modern and contemporary Indonesian and international art. It has a floor area of 7,107 square meters with display area of about 4,000 square meters. The museum is included in a list of the World’s 100 Greatest Places 2018 released by Time magazine. Museum MACAN opened in November 2017.

Kusama: Infinity is a 2018 American biographical documentary film that chronicles the life and art of Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, now one of the best-selling artists in the world, who overcame sexism, racism, and a stigma of mental illness to achieve international recognition relatively late in her career. Magnolia Pictures released the film on September 7, 2018.

Reiko Tomii is a Japanese-born art historian and curator based in New York. Specializing in Japanese modern and conceptual art in its global context during the postwar period, Tomii is one of the art historians publishing in the English language on postwar Japanese art. Tomii helped organize the first North American retrospective on the work of Yayoi Kusama (1989), and collaborated closely with curator Alexandra Munroe to produce the seminal exhibition and book Japanese Art after 1945: Scream Against the Sky (1994). In 2017, Tomii's book Radicalism in the Wilderness: International Contemporaneity and 1960s Art in Japan was awarded the Robert Motherwell Book Award by the Dedalus Foundation. Tomii is also co-founder and co-director of the postwar Japanese art research collective PoNJA-GenKon.

Chuo Municipal Chuo Elementary School is a public elementary school in Minato, Chuo, Tokyo. It is operated by the Chuo City Board of Education (中央区教育委員会).
